Lightweight, packable insulation is like wearable magic on ski tours and alpine climbs, and the Stoic Luft Hoody wants to be the magic in your pack. Stoic gave the Luft 100-grams of lightweight, synthetic Cirrus insulation and a warmth-retaining hood to help you brave alpine walls and early-morning skin tracks. The Luft’s 3-D ergonomic fit offers a layer-able fit that won’t restrict or inhibit motion.

Bottom Line: Stay warm from belay anchor to bar crawl.

Great under layer

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
December 17, 2010

When it is super cold out here in Colorado, I like to wear this jacket underneath my shell. It provides that extra warmth I need throughout the day. I prefer the luft hoody insulated over the one without the hood, because you can use it when the weather gets real bad and hide yourself under the roomy hood. It fits real well, and having the arms a little more form fitting makes it easier to get under your shell. Also if you like to tour with a little warmer layer, this is the one for you.

Perfect Jacket

By:
September 1, 2011

At 6'4" and 200lbs this jacket is a perfect fit in large; this is the first insulation piece I have ever owned that actually fits. Sleeve length is perfect and the back actually covers my waistline. This is an excellent insulation piece that borders on a heavy layer for higher AK peaks and and as a belay or camp jacket and everyday coat in the milder temps of SE Alaska. After nearly a year of expeditions, weekend warrior trips, and constant everyday use in a temperate rainforest this jacket shows minimal wear; some quilting and some stitching has come loose but after a good wash its back to being bright and repelling drizzle for yet another winter. The hood is large and loose without a helmet, but when ice climbing the hood is amazing for belaying! In an entire closet of outerwear this is my go to piece here in SE AK.

Incredible Warmth to Weight Ratio

By:
December 2, 2010

This is a super solid synthetic insulator. I bought last year's model and liked it enough that I bought 3 more as christmas gifts. The media pocket is awesome because it keeps your device's batteries warm. My one complaint with this jacket (which may have been fixed with this year's model) is the size of the hood. It's so large that it's almost dysfunctional without a helmet on. I'm constantly adjusting it to keep my peripheral unobstructed.

I am considering this as a replacement to an old & tattered Moonstone insulated jacket. I really like the moonstone but the pocket zippers snag nearly every time I zip up. Major Pain in the A**. How is the zipper quality on this jaunt?

These zippers are standard issue YKK, with the coils facing inward for a cleaner look. I think they perform quite smoothly, and don't noticeably snag. I think you'll like this jacket a lot.

Great warm hoody!

By:
November 19, 2010

I own the Patagonia down sweater and this is right there in quality, and quite comparable in warmth. The sleeves are quite long, which I have no problem with. Im 5'9 and 160# I ordered the medium and it fits great. There is enough room underneath for some layering. I have taken this backpacking in the sierras and the white mountains, been snowed on and this has kept me quite warm, rarely have I needed much of a shell over this. I would buy this again and recommend to a friend

luft hoody

By:
February 19, 2011

This sweater is pretty cool indeed. Great design, colors (black/blue), awesome hoody (big enough for me: 6'3" 180lbs and I got the medium), great fit, very warm and light!
The only problem I have with it is with regards to the sleeves: They're a bit narrow which make it a slightly difficult to remove the sweater without tearing apart the cuffs. But I understand that that design makes it warmer too, so I am ok with it. I don't think I would even mention it if I wouldn't use it for belaying: Put it on for belaying and take it off before climbing. So I had to do that a lot yesterday.

Excellent Jacket

By:
February 3, 2011

I have grown fond of this jacket. I wear it as an underlayer under my shell on most days including negative degree days with only a base layer underneath. It keeps me pretty warm. Also have used it on a 45+ degree day on its own with a t-shirt underneath. Feels so great and still breathes. I have the Deep Metal/Lime. I get lots of positive comments on the jacket, especially the color of the zippers.

Overall an excellent jacket as a underlayer or on its own. I wear it on my walk to work everyday in single and teen temps with only a baselayer underneath. Great warmth. Nice large hood that easily fits my helmet. Highly recommended.

January 13, 2011

This jacket is really light, easy to compress, and very warm. The sizing seems very strange when compared to other stoic gear. most stoic jackets have a very athletic cut whereas this one is much more boxy. a good feature that stoic could include in the future is being able to stuff the jacket into its own pocket. you can get pretty close but it doesn't quite fit. overall a good synthetic insulating layer.

I noticed that Stoic size chart for this year has changed.
I am 5'10"/172 lb, with about 40" chest (44 if I puff up :) and last year's Welder Lo in Medium fits me with enough room for a thin layer or two underneath.
This model's size chart suggests I should get an L - is that so?
I'd like to be able to wear the Luft under a shell (a roomier one than Welder)

(I'm not in US so ordering 2 and returning the spare isn't an option)

Thanks Adam,

I already broke and ordered a medium :)
Do you or anyone else know, by the way, if "100g Cirrus" refers to total insulation weight or density per m^2 (like they specify for Primaloft)?
Had a hard time comparing this to various PL jackets until I found it somewhere that PL weight listed in garment specs is actually density.

Hey, I'm 6'4" 185lbs and I wear a medium. In fact, I can wear a hoodie underneath and it doesn't look ridiculous. The sleeves are the only thing getting me- I might try a large to better suit my long arms. The elbows sometimes pull when I bend my arms.

damn near perfect! perfect fit (i am 6'1" 215 and ordered a large). quality made facket and is super light and fitting. i can appreciate the length (seems like everything is made to go to my belly button these days), but this jacket is plenty long, but not too much so. the only downer is that the hood is HUGE and needs some major cinching to fit on my head sans hat or helmet. i would highly recommend!

If you are looking for light weight, great looking, performance hoody, buy this jacket. I originally was going to wear it as a layer under my gore-tex snowboard jacket, but once i tried it on, I have been wearing it every day, to work, school, and any other place I can imagine. I would sleep in it if my wife would let me. Also it functions perfectly on a cold northern Vermont day, as a layer, I simpley wore this jacket, and my shell, and had no problems, staying warm. My only grief, is that the color, is not the same as the website, I bought the black and deep blue, and it is more like black and aqua, although, I have fallen in love with the colors. To sum it up, if you are looking for a synthetic, insulation jacket, buy this one, you will not be disappointed. I am 180lbs 5"9 a large fits perfectly.

No, and I'll tell you why:
It's not exactly waterproof.

Among the things to look for in that outer layer of your layering process would be water-proof, breathable fabric. The next layer beneath it is really a matter of how hot you get exercising, how cold you get being still and what type of person you are both temperature-wise and financially ;-) The old-schoolers recommend long underwear, a cheap fleece and then a shell of gore-tex.

March in colorado can be sunny and slushy. I would actually say that you might want long underwear that is warm and just a shell. have a good time in CO!

Way better than expected

By:
December 30, 2010

I had my eye on this jacket, but decided against it and bought last year's Cloudveil insulated mid layer instead (Enclosure Jacket no hood). The stitching and odd fit reviews detered me from the stoic. Then, the next day this popped up on S&C. I swipped the black/deep for $90 with every intention of returning it. The damn thing is perfect. I'm 5'10, 150lbs and got a medium. I can put a few small layers under it or a shell over (the helment hood makes it a touch bulky though). I'm praying I don't have stitching issues. Truth be told, I'll probably use the smaller cloudveil (i got a small) as an athletic layering peice and the stoic as an outer jacket on chilly days around town. Sorry bank account, its too good. Oh, and the 'deep' colored zippers aren't obnoxious like they look in pics.

May 26, 2011

i got this for my boyfriend and he can't stop marveling at how comfortable and warm it is. it's great for wearing around town as well layering under a coat or shell in colder conditions. it does a great job at blocking wind too. the cuffs are great for sealing in warmth as are the cinch cords. a fun suprise is an extra pocket not listed in the specs--there's an inside chest pocket as well. the only thing that might have been a fun option to have is a removable hood, but still really happy with the jacket.

By:
January 8, 2011

This thing is great. I used in Alaska on a backpacking trip, it got down to 15 below and the only insulation I used was this and a fleece. It packs very light and nice and small. The cuff is really nice too, it keeps the snow out pretty well. The hood could be a little bit smaller, but other than that I have no complaints. Definitely worth the weight and the money for the amount of insulation it provides.

The sizing was bumped up this year. More room in the body and arms. I have last years medium, it was a bit tight across the shoulders. But this years, no problems. The material also changed to Pertex Microlight. This is not coated so it breathes better than it did last year. A great piece for layering or going over the top.

The cheapest quality ever

By:
March 12, 2011

this is very very cheaply done product. The stitches in my pocket come apart next day. It doesn't have a stuff bag and the adjustment on the hood is done with a foam and it gets undone all the time.

so to walk around the town it is ok, the idea of the of this gear is good. I paid 70$ for it on SAC and i think that the real price should be like 40$

Best puffy ever

By:
March 6, 2011

I generally don't like puffies because they are bulky and I tend to overheat in them. This one is lightweight and just breathable enough to wear under any type of chilly conditions. When an arctic storm hit Lake Tahoe the temperature dropped to 5-10F, I just wore it over my longer underwear top and my shell for snowboarding and I was at a very comfortable temperature (I actually am a little cold usually and wear a thin fleece under my shell in 20-30F weather).

I actually wear it all the time now because it is so comfy. At my ski cabin, I wear it to bed because the house hasn't warmed up the first we are up (and head and shoulders are exposed above the blankets). I wear it at home when it is chilly in the late night and morning (thermostat is turned down 11PM-8AM to save energy).

It's great.

I want warmer and better construction

By:
February 25, 2011

Had this jacket for over a year and much of the insulation is coming out of the seams in the back. I think this may be due to wearing a messenger bag while biking to work.
I spend a lot of cold mornings waiting for a bus and the coat isn't as warm as I would like. I want it to be as warm as down, but I don't think it is. I could go for a little extra weight if it could be packed with more insulation.
The fit is great in my arms and I don't get all the bad reviews on that point.

By:
February 26, 2011

Actual weight of the Luft Hoody I got is 20 oz. From my in house testing, seems less warm than my 12 oz Patagonia down sweater (no hood). I like the yellow color...just not as lightweight as I was looking for, especially for being thin on insulation.

First, love the beehive color.
Second, great fit (5'9" 150 lbs) Medium is great, enough room for layers under, but not baggy.
Third- Super light: lighter, thinner, and more packable than my fleece!
Forth- warm! Wore this out three days ago on San Antonio (temps around 18) was comfy with only a long sleeve synthetic T-shirt underneath and a hard-shell (no insulation) over top. Great thing was, that unlike the fleece that this replaces I never got hot. Again, wasn't cold when I paused for snacks, and wasn't too warm when I started off again.

Lovin It

By:
February 3, 2011

Super comfy and warm. Really like the styling over some other synth micro puffys. Got the black/deep version, and it looks killer. Its more of a grey/blue/teal accent, much more subdued than in the photo per backcountry, and looks slightly duller than the user loaded pic too (but its a much better representation). With the blizzard of 2011 upon us, i have really been staying warm...10 degrees with a fleece and microweight wool longsleeve underneath, couldnt care less about the weather with it on (i honestly think i could wear this with a t-shirt and prob be ok outside with minimal wind, at the same time our office is 55 degrees so im still wearing the aforementioned layers and am just fine as i typer this). May need to figure out a warmer pant situation though.
Fit is spot on, 5'11" 190, slightly muscular build, wearing a large. I wear a large in most outerwear and this is no exception, but I dont go very baggy on stuff, so you might size up if thats your thing.

ITS not. this jacket is baggy and not form fitting. its more of a regular non athletic fit. I would've love to try the medium but paying the shipping is not really an option at this pt. I like it but due to the cut/ fit, it will not be used as a layering jacket but an outer coat.

By:
March 19, 2011

First Stoic purchase and I am pretty happy. This is a pretty awesome jacket. Nice fill of insulation, not too puffy, but still warm. This is replacing an old TNF Nuptse and I was looking for something less puffy, a little less warm, and a hood.

Hood is large (helmet compatible) and has nice cinch points. Fit is athletic. I am 6' and 210 lbs with broad shoulders and bought a large. Fits perfect. Also, the stitching on the jacket is pretty cool.

My only concern is the thinness of the material and the stitching. The stitching is already fraying in places (have had it for a month), but nothing serious yet. The material is thin (and very light), so I wouldn't wear it skiing. I would be afraid of snagging it.

I paid $75 on SAC which is a great deal. Very comparable to Mountain Hardware and Patagonia synthetic insulated jackets, which usually run around $200.

By:
February 15, 2011

I'm returning this because it is too tight in the arms. I am 6'2" and a healthy 190, but not muscle-bound. The arms are tight w/o anything underneath and just will not work when pulled over a shell and light baselayer as I usually wear in the backcountry.

If Stoic really wanted to take off, they would keep their price points, their no-frills "core-user" functionality and get the fit dialed. This is not the only Stoic piece I have had with a funky fit and I have to use caution in buying them. I go in to buying Stoic knowing there is at least a 50% chance I'll return it and I have cautioned friends as well. Now you all know and can make your own decisions. To Backcountry.com: change the fit from "tomato-with-toothpick-arms" to Height/Weight Proportionate and Stoic will be my brand of choice.

The insulation and the construction of the jacket is awesome. It is not bulky at all. The sleeves are a little longer than most coats, but it is a good thing. No more skin will be revealed when I raise my arms straight in the air. This jacket will be the perfect under layer for my ski jacket shell. Let's put it like this, I have a black one and I like it so much that I bought one of the new Beehive one's sight unseen of S&C and I'm just hoping it looks like it did in the pic.

I completely agree about the weird fit and the warmth to weight ratio. Although as was previously pointed out the arms are a bit long for streetwear but this comes in handy if you use the jacket for something more athletic. I'm 5'9" 160lbs and a 33" waist. The medium jacket fits pretty snug at my hips and I don't think someone bigger than myself could wear it comfortably, you'd have to go with the Large.

What up Bri? Just so happens I was on the receiving end of your xmas gifts ;)
