Lightweight, highly-compressible, and a god-send on top of frigid ridgelines, the Luft Down offers stow-able insulation for the coldest temperatures. Stoic insulated this on-the-go oven with 750-fill goose down in the main body ensuring optimal warmth despite the weather. Close-fitting and layer-friendly, the Luft Down Sweater wants to tag along on your next climb, tour, or shoulder season-backpacking trip. The Luft's super-light, slightly transparent shell material shows off its real goose down fill. If you're aiming to use the Luft Down as a layering piece go with a true-to-size fit, but if you're looking to layer over another jacket, you may want to consider sizing up.

Nice fit but some drawbacks

By:
December 17, 2009

I picked that up from SAC about a week ago for my wife in cream color and we didn't really like it. The cut is very nice along with the design for sure. But in cream color, it does look dirty although I didn't really mind it, she hated it. Also more importantly ('cause we can't change that) the pocket holes are TINY! She is tiny and she could barely stick her hands in. Too bad we had to return it otherwise with bigger pocket holes we would have just exchange it with the berry color.

Awesome coat!

By:
December 3, 2009

I just got this coat and absolutely love it. It's SO light, the fabric is extremely comfortable, and it definitely keeps you warm in the cold weather, without making you too hot. I'm 5'6, 130lbs, and I got the small bc I was afraid of the coat being too poofy and unflattering if I sized up. The small fits snugly, and I can layer it underneath my Backcountry softshell without looking too bulky bc it compresses so well (I probably can't layer much under it). I wore just the coat over a t-shirt today in 30-degree weather, and I was just fine.

I agree with another comment about the side pockets being small--they are not too small for my hands, but if you like stuffing lots of things into the pockets, you might not like these. Also, the description on the site says there are 2 hand pockets and 1 chest... but there actually isn't a chest pocket--just 2 outer hand pockets and 2 inner hand pockets.

I ended up getting the Berry color bc I didn't want the feathers to show through, and I am very happy with the color. The photo shows a very bright pink, but in real life it's more of a fuschia/magenta, and the feathers don't show through. If you want to get a better idea of the color, browse other Stoic women's coats that come in "Berry."

great looking and it works!

By:
October 14, 2010

I got this jacket to use as a mid layer for backpacking and it works awesome! Warm and cozy, and even though the inside is slick synthetic fabric - it still feels very nice to bare skin, not sticky at all. It also breathes very well. I wore it at the burning man every night for a week and it kept me cute and warm (together with wool bear hat). I'm 5'6", 140lb, and size M fits perfect. Blue color is cute and dark feathers don't bother me at all. Just make sure to wear a rain shell on top when it's wet outside - it's not waterproof and not really water-resistant at all either.

I have this jacket and I would say that if you look really close you can see the feathers. Personally I love the jacket so much I look past the minor visibility of the darker down in the fill. I will warn you aobut the small opening for the pockets.

Hi. The feathers aren't vesible at all. But I thought it was a real down jacket, but it's more like a fleece jacket with down feathers in it. But it's very nice and the color is amazing.

Ugly but warm in cream color

By:
May 22, 2010

I ordered the cream jacket and as soon as I opened the bag and held up the jacket my husband said "That thing is ugly!" You can see the white and brown feathers through this nearly sheen outer material. It is very warm and light though. However, when I put it on I noticed a small rip near my lower right pocket and small feathers were coming out. What a shame as this jacket, although quite ugly, is a very lightweight and warm jacket ideal for backpacking trips. But if the material rips easily your purchase isn't worth it, right? I may suggest you get a thicker material for a down jacket you feel comfortable wearing in public.

Breathability issues

By:
March 12, 2010

This down jacket is by far the least breathable down piece I own--and I own quite a few. I wear this under a shell for skiing and sweat quite a bit, so what my base layers wick away from my skin, this jacket retains on the inner lining. I take off the jacket and condensation is covering the lining. If you're a heavy sweater, you might think twice about this product.

The pockets are defintely very small, as other reviewers have noted. I normally wear it as a mid-layer, so I don't really need the pockets as I always wear a shell over it.

I ordered the jacket in Jade and the feathers definitely show through, but again, I wear it as a mid-layer, so not a big deal to me.

From a fit/warmth/packability/compression/lightweight standpoint it's great. It's very slim fitting, so it fits well under a shell without being bulky.

I do want to know if this will work on the moon.
Really... down (and fleece, and polyfill, etc) jackets work by trapping air. What if there is no air?

Nice to see some genuine scientific curiosity, even if this isn't really the venue you'd expect it in. The answer is no. Heat is lost from your body in three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is through direct contact with something cold, like holding an ice cube, but since there's no air to touch, that won't be a problem. Convection is when air currents pull warm air away from you and replace it with cold air, which then gets you cold via conduction. This is how down jackets work; they make a pocket of warm air around you and keep it from being circulated away. Again, if there's no air, that won't make a difference either. Radiation is heat leaving your body via infrared light, which is created wherever there is heat. Space blankets work by reflecting that back at your body, so they don't need any insulation. That's also how spacesuits work. Down jackets, unfortunately, won't contain radiated heat, so to (finally) answer your question, if you were to wear this jacket on the moon, you would be as good as naked.

Got this for the girl as a layer for skiing. She wears it under a softshell and stays nice and warm now. But, she also wears it everywhere else because she likes it so much. She has the blue color. The black feathers do look kinda weird sometimes, but you can tell it's feathers and it doesn't look like it's dirty at all. The only minor complaint she's had is that there are no pit zips. Overall, I'd guess she'd give it 5 stars though, since she tells all of her friends to get one, and wears the thing all the time.

very warm

By:
January 27, 2010

First of all, I did not buy this jacket for its looks, so I'm only going to rate it on its function. For that, this jacket deserves 5 stars. 750-fill down is almost as good as it gets as far as weight and bulk to warmth ratios (800 is the best to my knowledge). That means that this sweater keeps you warm with significantly less bulk and weight than a 650-fill (or lower) sweater. That is reason enough for me: I bought this to use as a layering piece under my waterproof shell for winter camping/ mountaineering and as a belay jacket for climbing. My only complaint function-wise is the size of the pockets: I can BARELY get my hands in and with gloves on I can't get them in at all. This isn't an issue for me, because when I belay I don't wear gloves and in the cold I always have a shell on over this jacket. That being said, the pockets are designed such that your hands go between the down and your body which makes the pockets really warm, if you can get your hands in them.

I can't help but make a few comments on its appearance. I bought the pink color and my climbing partner constantly makes fun of me for wearing it (the color is about 100x girlier than I am). I'd prefer something more earthy and subdued. Also, the shape is definitely feminine. I have the curves of a pre-pubescent girl, but in this jacket, I look like a real woman! I never though a down jacket could make my shape look BETTER, but it's true. You don't have to worry about the "michelin man" look with this one.

As long as the super-light shell fabric doesn't rip, I'll be using this jacket for years to come.

Great Coat

By:
December 3, 2009

This coat is super warm and really well fitted for those of us women with longer thin torsos because its really well shaped and fitted. The zipper for the pockets are a bit on the small side, but I love that you can stick your hands in the pockets and the layer between your hands and your body is thin and on the outside is the thicker down layer... it keeps your hands right next to your warm body keeping them nice and toasty. I think the color combination is great, nice and different, creative. The neck line is a bit of a snug fit, which at first felt tight, but now I'm used to it and have grown to actually like it because it keeps the cold air out. It is super light-weight which is always great. GREAT COAT!

i bought this jacket in pink(or berry, whatever). the color turned out to be dark pink, almost magenta. it does not look dirty at all, no dark feather issues. the jacket is amazingly warm!!! And i mean it. hiked up tp Mt. Marcy in the winter with winds up to 45 mph and windshield to -3F, was extremely warm with 2 layers underneath. it is awesomely light. the cut is flattering but not too tight. i am 5'4'' and 130 lbs, got medium.

New Favorite

By:
January 21, 2010

As the description says this jacket is lightweight and highly-compressible. I ordered the berry color which I was worried would be way to pink but I really liked the color when it arrived. Also just like many other reviews have stated it is a very fitted jacket. I have not had a problem fitting extra layers under this jacket (not that you need them it is so warm). I love this jacket because unlike my patagucci down jacket I don't look like sta-puff in it and it is actually warmer. The only complaint I have is that the opening for the pockets are too small but once your in there is room for your keys, phone and a snack. I would say yes you can see the dark feathers through the outer fabric...I don't see the problem.

Stoic Luft Down Insulated Sweater - just ok

By:
April 8, 2010

The pros:
It's warm and I do like the berry color. You can see the down fill through it if you look, but I care least about that. I have broad shoulders and the mediums fit great. The pockets are smaller, but I was surprised with the other comments of how "tiny" they were. My large hands fit okay. Overall it's incredibly lightweight and not puffy at all.

The cons:
Durability - the fabric is very thin. I got a tiny tear in the back on weaing it before I skied in in. It was disappointing as the down started coming out. I fixed it with duct tape and it's held so far.

I purchased this for myself and it just fit. However I am big busted and I coudln't wear much underneath it or it felt a little snug. Sooo I sent it to my daughter-in-law who normally is an XS and the M seemed to be okay for her. She can layer under the sweater if she wants to. She is very active and I am sure it will come in handy - especially the packing small part!

Great Jacket

By:
March 3, 2010

Just got this, so haven't tested it fully yet, but I love it so far. It's incredibly lightweight - I feel like I'm wearing a cloud - and very warm. I got the cream color and the feathers do show through, but I don't really mind the effect. It's slim-fitting, but I'm really small (5'5' 102 lbs) and generally have trouble finding clothes that fit, so I don't mind at all - the xs is great.

Great Decision

By:
February 26, 2010

Ive had this coat for about a month now and I think my other winter coats are starting to get jealous. It is extremely lightweight, slimming in design, and I love the magenta (berry) color. I was concerned about the pocket size when I purchased it, but I have not had a problem thus far. I am 5'8'', 140 and the Medium fits perfectly. I would recommend going an extra size up if you plan on some heavy layering under the coat, but honestly you will stay warm without the extra clothes. For the price, it was a great buy!

Great fit, warm and ugly!

By:
December 29, 2009

I got this jacket as a gift and immediately let down because of the strange color and the brown goose down showing through. It looked oddly speckled and the Lt Jade color is actually more of an 80's turquoise teal color. The jacket itself is fantastic as far as the warmth and fit go. If it came in a dark color, to cover the down showing through completely, then I would wear it until it fell apart! I'd have to agree with others who commented about the pockets... too small! I have small hands and couldn't get them all the way into the pockets comfortably.

This jacket would be great if you were wearing it under a hard shell for warmth... it's REALLY light and compresses down to a tiny ball.

Not a Fan

By:
December 10, 2009

I love the Berry Color of this coat, but other than that I'm not a fan. It runs small, so order a size up if you want anything other than a T-shirt under it, and the pockets are small so they are a bit uncomfortable to get into and scratch your hands and make it impossible to get into if you had any gloves on at all. This coat was warm on a 20 degree day, but I feel as though I am molting because so many feathers fall out every time I wear it. Bummer.

I just received this jacket in the lt. jade color...and I love it! You can definitely see the dark feathers through the material, but I like the look. And, the pockets are a little small, but I have small hands, so that design flaw isn't a huge deal for me. What I love...this jacket is SO lightweight, but very warm. It's the perfect layer for outdoor recreating, OR by itself. I also really like that it's very slimming and not bulky. I am 5'7" 130 lbs. and the Medium was a perfect fit for me.

Be careful when WASHING. I bought my girlfriend the blue color and she went to wash it like the tag says..."wash often" or something to that affect. BUT the material around the wrist and along the zipper turned white in places. The rest of the jacket, which it a different material, is fine. I think turning it inside out or using a dryer bag.

great fit

By:
December 2, 2009

This jacket had a great fit for me (5'7", 130 lbs, small chest, big hips). It was cozy and warm, and had nice long sleeves. A plus I haven't seen on other down sweaters is that this jacket has spandex around the cuffs that hug your wrists to prevent drafts up the arms. Not sure how durable the spandex will be over the long haul, but out of the bag it's really nice. As others have noted, you can see some dark feathers through the very thin shell fabric (in the jade color), but the flattering shape, super light weight, and coziness outweigh the spots for me. Just not crazy about the white zipper.

Love the jacket! It's a very feminine fit and the color is not as pink as it looks in the picture. Don't be misled by the lightweight, this is one toasty coat! The entry to the pockets are small--and I have small hands--but once you wriggle inside there is plenty of room.

Stoic Luft Down Insulated Sweater

By: Backcountry.com Employee
November 2, 2009

I bought the Stoic Luft Down Insulated Sweater in the Lt. Jade / Cream color for my wife and can't recommend it in this color. While the jacket is very well made and warm, the choice to combine a semi-transparent material with black and white down feathers is strange. The jacket looks dirty right out of the box because you can see the black feathers in there. Also, the tag says that the jacket is reversible, which it is not, and the pockets barely fit her hands, which are pretty small. Since it is a very nicely constructed jacket, I can recommend the Berry/Cream color as it is not transparent and looks nice if that's the color you are into.

Super Warm!

By: Backcountry.com Employee
November 3, 2009

I recently tried out the Stoic Luft down sweater, and was immediately impressed with the practicality of it. At a little over 1/2 a pound, the Luft is by far one of the lightest down jackets I have ever tried, which makes it great for backcounty/sidecountry touring. It is a great insulated layering piece for those cold days, and will keep you warm. The fit on this jacket is very feminine and doesn't make you look like a bubble like many other down jackets. Thumbs up!
