I use this solely to wear under my shell on cold days. It does a great job keeping my core warm. It was exactly what I was looking for.

This vest is light and very warm. It packs down much smaller than fleece and is the perfect mid layer for cold weather. My biggest issue is the zipper - it constantly gets stuck on the flap underneath; its separated a few times also. Id sacrifice an oz for a zipper that worked every time. Still i wore it all winter.

This is a great light mid layer.
It doesn't have hand pockets, which saves weight, but is annoying.

The jacket stuffs into the chest pocket, but there is not pull tab on the other side of the zipper to close the pouch.

5'8 135lbs a small is perfect.

I bring it as a mid layer under a shell for any activity. I wear it over a fleece and under a shell for skiing.

I bought this vest at the last minute for my AT thru-hike earlier this year. I ran into a bit of extra cash and decided I'd take this as my insulation layer rather than a 16 oz. fleece jacket.

From what I understand, we experienced unseasonable warmth on the trail this year (March 12-July 21st). It only dropped below freezing on a few occasions. If you are expecting this to keep you toasty warm in consistent winter temperatures, it might not be right for you.

For me, it was exactly what I needed. I never hiked in it - only used it for breaks and evenings. It took up almost no room in my clothing bag and kept me plenty warm when worn with everything else I had (merino baselayer, long sleeve shirt, and rain shell over top).

I've been careful to avoid embers from fire and snagging branches, but it's in as good of condition as when I bought it. All these months later, I still wear it pretty often. I'm very glad I had it on the trail and I'm happy to still have it.

Vest seemed flat, poorly insulated. Tried it on and zipped it up. Zipper snagged the fabric, cutting the shell on first zip!!! Sent back. Refund was not a problem. Will not buy anymore Stoic products, no matter how on sale. That is not true. I am cheap. 90% off i would try it again.

I posted a review with a fix on this, but it seems backcountry.com deleted it. Just sew 2-4 lines parallel to the zipper all the way down. Check out the picture of the blue vest labeled "Mostly good. Bad zipper but easy to fix." If it wasn't so cheap at the time of purchase, I would have returned it and not bothered with fixing the zipper.

nevermind. My review was just buried in the past.

It's all right. It's OK. It's nothing to write home about. I went for it because of the price. Not having side pockets seems to sum up the vest. Not the warmest either. It's a vest and it does help keep your core warmer than not having a vest on. The colors that are available suck. Over all I find the Stoic stuff good, especially when they sleaze the stuff out for well under a hundred bucks.

Backcountry (BC) has impeccable customer service. I was unsatisfied with this vest so BC accommodated my requests and even sent a next day air shipment at NO COST to me. Amazing! I will not shop elsewhere and I suggest you don't either.

Only complaint is the color did not meet my expectations. The agave vest was not a bright golden yellow, but more of a pale yellow/green. The material is also surprising by having a "splotched" look. It is not a solid even color throughout, but has darker spots on the actual material. When first pulling it out of the package, I thought it was dirtied from the warehouse. Nope. Just the look of the material. Kind of cool, just didn't like the color of the agave.

Ok, I have purchased 3 same vests at one time with different colors for my beloved male family members and none of them were satisfied with the vest itself. Few comments:

Blue/Midnight vest: it is not the same color from the website at all. From the website, it looks premium and fashionable. But it came out a very normal blue and the zipper was the same blue (not bright orange!) with below average quality (stuck here and there). The picture looks very nice, but the actual vest just so countryside and boring. Nobody in his 20's - 30's would like to even give it a try. Even for my father-in-law, it looks dull on him.

Orange/Paprika vest: you can clearly see the goose down through the surface. The picture gave me an impression that the surface is some kind of thick, but it just as thin as an Egg shell membrane.

Size: it runs a little bit small than other brands.

Most unsatisfied thing: No Pockets! No Pockets!

Good thing: Warm and lightweight.

Jacket is very comfy and soft although it would have been great to have pockets on the side where you can put your hands when it's really cold. i think the purpose of having a down jacket/vest is to feel warm without having the heavy weight in this case there's only one pocket available to put your phone.

I would give it 4.5/5 if I could. I actually prefer that it doesn't have pockets as I tend to use it as a layer that I take on and off fairly frequently. One think I particularly like it for is backpacking. As a light-weight nut I like paring down options that I don't truly require and getting rid of pockets saves ounces which will add up to pounds. That said, it does good features like the elastic around the waist for preventing draftiness. The thickness is great too; it isn't too thick like many vests which end up making your core too warm and sweaty while leaving your extremities cold. I also liked the athletic cut. I take off half a point because you can easily jam the zipper if you aren't careful.

I didn't notice the no pockets until I tried this thing on the day I got it. Why wouldn't there be pockets? It can't reduce weight that much. I wore it a few times and loved everything about it with the exceptions of the lack of pockets. I couldn't get over this. I tried to put my hands in the no-pockets a hundred times while wearing it. This was a deal breaker for me and I sent it back.

If I was always going to use this as a layering piece under something else, it would have been near perfect. The quality, fit, weight and comfort is top notch. I highly recommend this vest for what it is. I hope they add pockets in another version of this.

I would wear this all the time if it had hand pockets, but it's definitely great for layering. Amazingly light and disappears when packed.

I'm 5'11 175lbs and the large fits perfectly.

Very light, very comfortable, and packs down amazingly. I got this for bikepacking and everyday use, one of the best purchases I have made, yet. I'm 5'11" and 170 pounds with broad shoulders, ball-player structure - got the medium first, but not much stretching room, returned it for a large, fit is right on, same length-just roomier. get one!!!

I love this vest, it is soft and extremely warm for the thickness. I had expected it to be a little thicker like most down vests you see but it still has done the trick even on the coolest of these fall nights so far.

Im 5'9" 125lbs. S or M?

Small.

I'm 5'11" 160 and can wear a S with a thin layer underneath or a M with a bit more room for layering, but still a trim fit. I stuck with the M.

Pros: Very light, very warm, and very packable (although its not built to pack in to its own packet..it just happens to do that. You can't zip it shut once you pack it in, but you can pull the waistcord around it and it works fine.)

Cons: Feels pretty cheap, zippers snag easily, already seeing some tiny feathers coming out at the seams.

For $65, it's a great deal and I don't regret the purchase, but I'm not expecting this vest to last more than a season or two. It's very warm and very light though, which I think is what most people care about.

Streamlined for function. Weight to warmth to puffiness ration is fabulous. Packs into its own pocket! No pockets, but that's what you get for the streamlined performance.
