Great Fleece Hooded Jacket

I have the same jacket for women and my boyfriend was always super jealous of me, so I ended up giving him one as a gift. He absolutely loves it. Soft, the material is confortable and warm. True to size and the color remains the same for long time even after multiple washes ...

New favorite jacket

By:
April 17, 2012

I love this jacket. It is great for a variety of temperatures at school in upstate New York, its wind and water resistant. I find myself grabbing it more than other coats. It's stretchy, soft, has a nice bit of loft. I have yet to really put it to the test in the field, i.e. camping, hiking, or hunting, but I'm spending the summer in Southcentral Alaska and I have a feeling it will be my go-to all season. Build quality seems great so far after a few months of daily wear and it does not suffer from sleeves that are too long like some of Stoics other shirts or jackets.

Great Hoodie

By:
April 17, 2012

Comfy and warm. Well built and looks sharp too. I get all my Stoic tops in Medium, as I like it snug (6'1", 170). Reading the reviews I ended up getting the large. It was a little large in the sleeves and slightly baggy overall on first wear, but a cycle in the wash and dryer brought it down to perfect size. Do not have the stretching problem another review mentioned. Will buy again, if they refresh the colors.

Most times your measurements will be a more accurate indicator than height/weight. You can compare them against the sizing chart below the price.

Simple and effective

By:
April 16, 2012

I am 5'11, 140 lbs, and the small fits very nicely. I've taken this jacket on the trail as well as backpacking and it has held up very well so far and kept me warm and protected from the wind.

I immediately removed the zippers from the pockets and have had no issue with the threads, so I would recommend this to anyone who purchases this jacket. The zippers are a bit small by themselves, so this may cause issues unzipping with gloves. Another reviewer mentioned sanding down the rough parts of the zipper extensions, which I think would do the trick as well.

Oh, and I have the Black/Deep, and it looks just as pictured. Enough flare to stand out a bit with the zips, but still a solid black jacket you can wear anywhere.

Got mine Deep/Empire at the beginning of the year. Great fit & stylish- the cut is slim and athletic; comfortable and more importantly, light!

Love the Stoic brand!

Hey guys - I bought one of these a year or so ago (the black-grey+orange zippers). I love it. Is this edition just as slim-fitting as the old one was? Because I would be upset if I returned my original one and got a baggier one in return (e.g. I know that the Stoic Luft sweaters got roomier a season or two ago when they changed colors).

I have the '09 version in the same dark grey/orange. Like you I love it, one of my favorites! Anyways, just got the 2011 version in the vintage color. While I wasn't sold on the color at first (was thinking it was more grey then purple) the fit is pretty much dead on to the previous version. I have ended up warming up to the color, so I'm keeping this bad boy. Hope that helps

Good jacket, minor issues

By:
December 23, 2011

Great jacket, great fit. I am 5'7", 140 lbs, and the medium fits me great. The Deep/Empire color is very nice looking. I got lot of compliments. The Polartec Wind Pro fabric is not as wind resistant as I expected, as I am feeling wind chill in 15 mph wind. I use it primarily as mid layer, with a softshell to block the wind when it's under 50F outside. When it sunny and not much wind, I can wear it along with a baselayer. Two issues arise with my jacket. First, the polartec logoed loop used to hang the jacket irritate my neck, because the end of the fabric loop was cut using heat knife, make the end hard and sharpish. I had to remove it. Secondly, the left pocket zipper pull, the yellow plastic tab, has a rough, low nap Velcro like surface. The edge of which caught the threads stitching the left sleeve's seam together. The threads are made up of very fine polyester, thus it's pilling like fleece. I was very disappointed and consider returning the jacket, but I already removed the hanging loop, and tossed the brand name tag. I finally used a sharp scissor to trim the loose threads, and used a sharp knife to remove the rough surface from both zipper pull tabs. I wish I could find some of those seam sealing fabric tape that Outdoor Research used on the outside of their Mithril jacket. That will fix the sleeve for sure.

killer fleece

By:
April 1, 2012

I bought this fleece for street wear on cooler days but after wearing it once i was shocked at how warm and cozy it was. It is a nice thin layer but SUPER WIND RESISTANT. I now wear this more for backcountry hiking/touring and as a layer under my technical proshell and it keeps me warm and happy in 10-20F days on the hill and comfortable and cool on the hike/tour up. Breathes well and protects from the wind chill.

Did I mention it looks killer?
I am 6' 190 athletic and the XL fits well with a bit of room to spare for a cozy fit.

Has anyone else bought this in Vintage/Excalibur? I was expecting more of a grey, and this thing is definitely looking purple. I love my old Breaker fleece (I have the black/orange version) but not sure I'm loving the purple. I hate to send this back!

Nice hooded fleece with minor flaws

By:
March 1, 2012

This is a very comfortable "fleece" (interior, not exterior) with decent wind-resistance that I've been wearing daily since I purchased it sometime in December 2011.

There are a few minor areas which made me mark this as 4/5.
1. As previously mentioned by others, the seams fray as the zipper handles get caught on them. I've had to trim them several times. It seems a bit of a design flaw.
2. I'm 5'10" 170lbs with 39" chest (an average athletic build) and the sizing was an issue for me. The Medium (size I wear in everything) was tight all around and I didn't really like how it fit. It was almost like a Medium-minus. I exchanged it for a Large which is more like a Medium-plus and fits great except for the long sleeves, which is to be expected given the size-up.

This is a great buy when it's on sale. :)

Epic!

By:
November 29, 2011

Just picked this bad boy, 6' 170lbs, size large. Great fit! I'm somewhat long in the arm department and it fits great! Nice and warm, the Polartec feels great. The hood is very fitting along with the rest of the overall fit. It fits great under any shell, not bulky in the slightest. Great all around jacket for either hitting the back country for some serious pow action or just a comfortable jacket for around town.

A winner

By:
January 9, 2012

If you're 5-10 and around 140 pounds, a Small will fit like it was made for you. It runs slim through the body with arms about the right length. The hood fits about perfectly even without adjusting--fits close and moves with your head and the interior fleece is soft. This fits and feels so great that you might just dispense with the base layer and put this directly on. Very much like an Arc Tau with a hood and, if you find it on SAC, only 40% of the cost. Minus a few of the costly Arc niceties of finish. [See my further comment on this comparison below--apparently I wasn't signed in, which was why I couldn't find the way to edit this review.] I'll admit I can't speak yet to how it functions in the elements, but even if all I did was to wear this around the house I'd be a big fan. Black with blue zippers is an inspired color combo.

Can't really find the way to edit my review, but I thought I should add, regarding the comparison to the Arc Tau, that the Breaker feels thinner. I'm not sure "cheaper" is the right word to use, because I really like the Breaker's feel, cut, hood, and price, but it does seem less substantial than the Tau. As many people have said before, there's a reason that Arc'teryx products cost so much. Still, not to take away from the Breaker...I think it's a winner, especially if you can get one on SAC or Gear Trade.

Sizing problem:
I'm 5' 9" (176cm)/ 119 lbs (54 kg), and I used to wear a s size montane feather lite velo jacket which fits me well in length but some how too baggy in girth. Can anyone tells whether a s-size fits or not? (I'm more concern about its length)

Either way, you should look for this item on steep and cheap as it goes on there all the time (probably a couple times per day) for $100.

Hope this helps.

Best way to do this is click "chat now" in the upper right. Ask the associate if you can order both small and medium, and return the one that doesn't fit, with free shipping. Backcountry far surpasses any other customer service! You pay for both up front, but you get to choose the right size, and return the other for free.

Great fleece

By:
February 18, 2012

This has become a go-to for me.

I'm 5'7", 145 lbs., and I went for the small. Fits great for me. I have not had the same issues with the seams as some of the other reviewers, and I've put this thing through a lot. I often wear it as a hoodie indoors, and I've even taking it on a climbing trip to Devil's Lake, WI in February when it was in the low 40s. The comfort range of this garment is really wide.

If someone were to FORCE me to be extra-critical, I would say that the side pockets are kind of a little bit high on the jacket, and the interior chest pocket is too small to hold a larger cell phone (fits an iPod fine, but my Droid X2 won't fit). I have had some pilling where my arms swing against my sides, but not as bad as my other fleece jackets and hoodies. Also, the wind-resistance is good, but not perfect.

Bottom line, the jacket fits, looks, and performs fantastically. Like another reviewer, I had held out purchasing this due to the price, but the quality is so high, that even though it is cheaper now, I regret not purchasing it long ago.

Yay

By:
January 28, 2012

For some reason, the item description and most reviews do not mention a little thing about this jacket: it stretches (5% spandex).
Having owned another, unstretchable, Wind Pro jacket before, I didn't expect that, but it makes this one a whole lot better.
In other news, the fit is great and trim (82 kg/180cm, 40" chest, M is just right for wearing little to nothing underneath), deep color is pretty, it's thinner than some other Wind Pro jackets, but that only means you won't sweat as much should you decide to exert in it ;)

less than three

By:
January 22, 2012

I had been holding out on buying one for over a year. The price was just a little out of my range for a hoody.

That was stupid.

This fleece is my favorite garment. Period. As far as comfort, flexibility, and quality, nothing else compares.

It's not as warm as my Kavu fleece, but in most situations that is a good thing. It is also about 1/4 the weight.

The stitching gets caught on stuff occasionally, but it has yet to loosen anything.

The fleece is pretty damn wind-proof. I'm talking 30mph on a cycle in 15F and I feel almost nothing through it(only had a Stoic Composite longsleeve underneath).

It resists quite a lot of rain also. Not nearly as waterproof as my Stoic Luft Hoody, but to shirk the first 30minutes of a light rain, this will do.

The hood is very comfortable and fits tightly enough that when combined with a furry hat, I don't even need a scarf.

The draw string around the waist is key. I forgot to use it for the first couple weeks, and kept getting a chill underneath. Then i remembered the string, and it is essentially form fitting now.

I definitely love this friggen thing. Its worth the hundy.

EDIT: I should mention the color. I have Deep/Empire. The yellow is quite bright on the zippers, but honestly, it looks good. I have gotten a lot of complements. It is not as sexy as the old Slate/Orange, but since that's discontinued, too bad. I have a friend with the Black/Deep, and I like mine better. His black is really jet, and for some reason I don't like it as much. This blue is bright, but not quite as much as it looks above.

Nice jacket, but still some flaws

By:
January 17, 2012

I've been wearing this jacket for more almost months. This jacket is great when wearing as a mid layer, but it could also can sustain windy days by itself. I'm 176 cm/55 kg and the S size fits me well. The fabric gives a nice touch and the athletic cutting looks amazing stylish. However, compare to its price, there are several thing that could be improved as well: First, since this jacket is made by those "wind resisting" fabrics, it is strange that the front zipper did not have a storm flap, thus, letting the chilling wind get straight through zipper. Second, it would be great if there could be integrated thumb hole as those of RAB shadow hoodie. Also, as yec4313172 mentioned, the hanging loop and the zipper also causing me problems. All in all, it is a nice piece, but it could be far more better.

Great Jacket

By:
January 12, 2012

Got mine in Black/Deep and it is typical Stoic quality and fit. I'm 6'3", 200-205lbs and the XL fits great. I usually wear a 36-37" sleeve in dress shirts and the sleeve length is on par with that. The cut is slim and athletic, although it could use 1-2" more in length or at least a drop tail to be perfect. The Wind Pro fabric is a pretty lightweight fleece that breathes well and definitely blocks wind more than a plain fleece layer. Polartec says that it is 4x more wind resistant than normal fleece and I would say that their claim is accurate and its wind resistance falls somewhere between a normal fleece and a highly breathable softshell.

4 stars only because it could be a little longer.

Just bought another one

By:
December 30, 2011

Bought the blue/yellow a while back, and used on the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. Was perfect for the upper elevations when needing a bit of warmth and wind protection (icebreaker tee underneath) while trekking, for all but the coldest and windiest sections. Great for lounging too, and can be layered above and below easily.
I bought the second because it is so comfortable, I wanted a black one that would be a bit more casual. I mean really comfortable. The material is so lightweight and super soft and lofty feeling inside, while smooth and resistant outside. Perfect amount of stretch. Good for biking around in the cold too, breathes great.
Few threads on the arm of mine are getting fuzzy, but nothing major, only complaint, but its seen use.
Have become a big fan of more than a few stoic items.

Nice, but...

By:
January 20, 2012

Pretty warm fleece. I got the large (5'9"/165lbs), and it's neither loose nor tight, just a normal fitting large. I'm using it to layer under my jacket, and I'm fine in just a tee shirt, fleece, and hardshell down to around 15 degrees.

However, like another reviewer had mentioned, the seams are not so good. They are fraying all over the place and fuzzing up after light use. I'm not exactly worried about the stitching coming undone, but still.

The hood is pretty form fitting around your head, so if you like more relaxed hoods, keep that in mind.

I took a chance on the Stoic Brand with my first purchase of this fleece hooded jacket and have purchased 6 additional Stoic items. This is a first quality hooded jacket that is warm, comfortable and has a nice appearance. The hood zips up to keep the face toasty warm and the fabric and stitching appear durable. I have a First Ascent Hangfire Hoody and this is a notch up in warmth and overall quality. i'm 150 pounds, athletic build with long arms and a 38" chest and the medium fits great. Thank you Stoic for fine pieces of clothing that feel great and look good.

Versatile, Athletic Jacket

By:
December 6, 2011

Second Stoic piece, and I continue to be impressed. 5'11, 160lbs, 38" chest with long torso and the medium is perfect. Vintage is certainly purple, but it's a subtle one I've received compliments on.

It's great with a t-shirt in the 60s, down to the 40s if you're moving around. Haven't done any serious aerobic activity in it yet, but I imagine it'll get some use during the winter months. The hood is a pretty snug fit even without drawstrings, which are on the waist as well.

If nabbed on SteepandCheap, you're not going to find a better deal for a Wind Pro jacket. And yes, the fabric does live up to its namesake with a light, DWR-like finish to repel light drizzle for a bit.

One caveat...the stitching on the inner, left arm is already fraying after a month of moderate, casual use. I'm not worried structurally, just a bit disappointing given the price and how slick the jacket looks.
