I love this sweater! It is very soft and warm. I haven't used it in the coldest weather but on a chilly CA night, it kept me very warm. I'm 5"1 and 130 pounds and I got a size small. I think it fits perfect. The only problem with the sweater is the pilling at the seams which others have mentioned in their reviews. This happened after only one or two wears. It's mostly on the inside seams of the arm sleeves so not entirely noticeable. I deducted one star for this. I like that it has a drawstring on the inside of the pockets to adjust the size around the bottom of the sweater. A little pricey but so far I think it's worth the purchase. Additionally, I experienced amazing customer service from Backcountry. There was a miscommunication with the shipment of my sweater, and they handled it promptly and efficiently.
Seemed great but didn't last long at all

I bought a stoic jacket hoping that the sleeve length would work for my gangly arms. I was spot-on with that guess. I'm 5' 9", 136 lbs, 34- 28- 36 and for those body dimensions the fit was GREAT. What I was really disappointed with was how long this jacket lasted (or not). It's only been a couple of months of MILD use- no hiking/ camping/ climbing and the end of the cinch cord around my waist is torn out of my pocket. I've washed it once and the inside material is pilled. Just not the quality I expected. Sad.

Like the title, I have three of these jackets and if there were more colors I would have more. I wear this jacket all the time. It is soft on the inside and repels light rain and wind on the outside. I live in ND where it can get very cold and windy. I wear this jacket on the 15 degree and above days with a few layers underneath and I am very comfortable. I wear it all summer too on the cooler days. I am 5'1" 110 with athletic build and wide shoulders and I bought a medium so I could layer underneath and fits great because of the drawstring at the bottom. I tried on a small and had some room but the medium gave me more options without looking too big or frumpy. I have washed them multiple times including one that I have had for a few years now and still looks brand new!
awesome jacket

Very warm; nice, flattering fit; in light drizzle water beads up so it is water resistant. Love the high collar and hood can snuggle around back of neck to keep warm even without putting hood over head. Had some problems with 3 - 4 inch pieces of thread hanging from the stitching. DON"T pull them off, snip off. Hope there is no raveling. Overall a very attractive, warm functional jacket.

well done stoic! this fleece is not only super cute, but also incredibly functional. i would say its one of my favorite items of clothing and has definitely been put through the wringer. after a year of washing and wearing this jacket, the outside looks identical to when i bought it. if you look at the the inside fleecy side, you can notice some wear, but its still super soft and not even really pilling. and besides, no one ever sees the inside!
like most stoic stuff, it runs a little smaller (and longer) than other companies, but that's one of the things i love about their stuff. i'm 5'5", 110ish lbs and the XS is perfect. its fitted, but i can still put some layers underneath it if necessary. i also dig the fact that the sleeves and torso are cut a little longer and the neck is super high. the fabric itself does a decent job of blocking wind and repelling water, but it's still a fleece so don't expect miracles.
also, this fleece does a magnificent job of repelling pet fur which is a major plus in our household.
its kind of spendy, but if have the money or, better yet, find it on sale, it's a great piece to have around.
good stuff

I love this jacket. The fit makes it a great layering or stand-alone jacket, and the fleece lining is a great touch (especially with the fleece in the pockets). It is surprisingly water-resistant, warm, and very comfortable.

This fleece is a great coat for the price for spring/fall weather when it's not too windy. The sugarlite color looks great and the fit is perfect on me, even in the shoulders. I like coats that are tailored and not bulky which is exactly how this coat fits. I bring this coat with me everywhere.
My go-to fleece

I love this fleece! It is very soft, comfortable and warm. It does seem to snag a little easy, and for me the arms are long so I have to roll them up.
Review flagged as I think the product they are talking about is the wrong one. The one that I purchased does not have thumb loops.. Click here to view.
Great fit, just don't snag it

Got this jacket before a trip to Peru and it was pretty great. I really like the feel and the fit. Zips fine over a larger chest and plenty of room in the shoulders. The sleeves are long and cover well past my wrist with no thumb holes, not a problem for me but it might bug some people. Kept me warm while moving but not while stationary in the wind off the mountains. It has lots of stretch but holds its shape well. Unfortunately, after hiking through mountains and ruins the seams got some pretty gnarly pulls. Even though the shell itself didn't snag, the material used for the stitching caught on every bit of exposed velcro, branches, and rough boulders. So far the seams are holding up, but I'm hoping that holes don't develop. Also, the ceramic/chartreuse jacket is more seafoam than turquoise. I love this jacket with the exception of the seams catching on everything (literally, everything).

I got this in Sugilite/Ceramic and I get so many compliments on the fit and color. I'm 5'1" , 120 pounds, and the Small fits perfectly everywhere (I didn't have a problem with the shoulders like others have). This stands up well to wind and is great in light rain. The waist cinches and there is a little hidden chest pocket on the inside. This is surprisingly warm for a 200 weight and I'm absolutely in love.
Stretchy Fleece is the best

This Stoic jacket is much more of a fleece hoodie than anything, but met my expectations. It is my favorite winter-hiking mid layer, and also my favorite climbing hoodie & is good for really cold weather running. Its packable and light and cozy... keeps you warm even when your base layer is damp. It also serves as great insulation under a shell; does not impede movement.
I ordered this jacket after happily owning 2 powerstretch fleece hoodies. So far this hoodie does offer more wind resistance than regular power stretch fleece. It also seems to have a bit more rigidity to it, but is still stretchy enough to move around.
The fit is average for outdoor clothes, and runs a little bigger than my Stoic tees (Mediums - loose fit). I am 5'4" athletic build (bigger shoulders/arms, small waist/mid section, have hips), and am usually a small in most tops, and this fits perfectly in a size small- I can layer under it (a longsleeve flannel shirt) - and it doesn't feel/look bad. It is not at all bulky, rather form-fitting and is long enough (hits below hip, about mid-butt). Also, there is a sweet inside pocket.
For the down side, as previously mentioned - Velcro will snag this hoodie, but I can say that about all of my powerstretch fleeces. Also, it is not a shell - so it wont really act like one.
I was expecting the color to be blinding (ceramic), but it is a more subdued turquoise, with chartreuse accents. I really do love it - fun & different pallet of colors.
I would live in this thing if I could.
Great for around town or on the mountain

MMy girlfriend uses this all the time. It's her go-to jacket for around town or when we're going up for an afternoon climb. She loves the sleeves because they are long enough she can partially tuck her hands into them when its a little cold out. She wears a small and with Stoic's form-fitting athletic fit she looks great while adventuring outside! Pockets are deep and are very warm. While not completely windproof it does great in breathability and layering. Throw a hardshell over this jacket and "do it for the story" because you'll be comfortable for sure!

I bought this for my gf for xmas and after several days it has lost its glow. The left side hood-adjusting-bungee snapped when she tried to adjust the hood. Also, i had my shell on top of her jacket in the car for a few hours and the velcro from my jacket tore up the seams and materrial of her stoic and it looks really worn in some spots, especially the seams (1 week old!). Besides that, it is not "toasty warm" as described; its not warm at all. If she had one main complaint about this jacket, it is that it does not keep you warm even in cool temps 50F.
She loves the color, but has declared it impractical. Returning to BC in t-minus 3, 2, 1.

Is this strictly a layering in piece or can it be used as a top layer to wear around town as a light jacket or on the hill for spring skiing? From the comments it sounds like a layering piece, I'm looking for more a light jacket that can be worn over other layers to cruise to the apre spot in or rock for spring days.

This would sit in my book as a layering and non wet/windy day outer garment. I would at least use a light soft shell over this if it is being used for generally wetter spring skiing.
Runs a little bit big

I love this jacket, is warm, the material is amazing, is perfect for layering, I used it for skiing and with a water proof jacket on top and I never felt cold. The only thing is that it runs a little bit big but not that much that you would look shaggy.

Wondering about fit on this jacket, does it tend to run small or big in size? I am 5'5", 119 lbs. in TNF I wear a small, in Marmot I wear an XS. Thanks so much, Shannon
Kate Atha
Member since
I'd say the fit is pretty true. I wear a small in Marmot, Patagonia, and Mammut. I wear a medium in Flylow and Stoic shells (Like a roomier fit for outerwear). I have the small Stoic Breaker fleece,at 5'5" 130 lb. Go with the XS if you want a closer athletic fit, and the small if you want to layer under it.

I actually have a couple of these. They are awesome. Great Polar tec material: warm, cuts wind and has a DWR finish which helps shed water. Material has a hard face so won't snag like some other fleece pieces. It will last you a long time.
