Bottom Line: A wind-shunning base layer ready for any activity.
This is an awesome garment.... I wear it a ton, its very insulated, comfortable, and looks great. The sizing is true, and if you want it a bit baggy I would size up. I totally recommend this sweatshirt for everyday use or if you need some insulation in the mountains.
I own it too so here goes. The outer is a smooth face. The interior is traditional fleece. And yes there is an elastic drawcord for the waist with pull tabs inside the pockets.
since you own this jacket, I was wondering if you could tell me if it is a smooth face of traditional fleece face. Also, is the interior a traditional fleece? or is is somthing else. and then my last question, is there a drawcord for the waist?
Current inventory is what we'll have through the 2010 season. Look for the Stoic Breaker style to return with full sizes and additional colors in Fall, 2011.
Great product!!! It is super warm, looks sweet, and is very comfortable. Its nice for either chillin, or even if you are up on the hill and need some warmth underneath. I definitely recommend this sweatshirt.

Unfortunately, there was a dramatic fabric price increase and this product has not been produced for Fall 2010 season. The Stoic team is looking to replace this product for Fall 2011.
I'm 5'8", low 120-lbs. I found the size small to fit perfectly; it's perfectly slim in the torso - a first for any hoodie I've ever tried. If you're more built than I am, then you may consider sizing up unless you don't mind the fabric physically hugging you. The pockets and pulls are excellently finished. I ordered gray-orange - it's VERY nice - it doesn't even look like it's technical gear, rather, something far more fashionable. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone.
So, got this "Sweatshirt" because I am rather warm blooded so I hate wearing winter jackets that sweat me out. That being said, every fleece that I have owned just lets wind whip through it. I picked this up a few months ago, and have warn it nearly everyday. It is a bit tight in the arms, so don't expect to wear multiple layers, but it sure does keep you warm. Was out in 20- temps, in just a t-shirt and stayed perfectly warm. Bottom line a great windproof fleece, extremely warm and breathable, and I'm sure it would work well under a shell as well. Keeping my eye open, on SAC to pick up a second one.

This jacket has become my favorite jacket so far this season. I got the medium in grey with the orange trim. The look is slammin good. It has a very modern tech look without the idiotic teenage wanna be ganster graphics or skater bagginess on this jacket. At the same time, the jacket didn't constrict movement at all. The fit was spot on for me, at 5'9'', 160 lbs and 41 inch chest. One thing that ticks me off about some jackets is that the stomach area is too baggy and pouchy. This jacket doesn't have that problem. One thing to note, the grey isn't really a solid grey. It actually looks a lot like micro-checks, kind of like a screen door. A nice touch actually.Material is superb. The PolarTec Windpro with the hardface outer is, in my lowly, opinion the best all around fleece material if weight and compression are not concerns. I've tried wearing the Retro-X jacket and the Monkey Man, and some other more fuzzy material but that crap just doesn't sit right with me. I feel like Fozzy the bear or some man sized fuzzy stuffed animal. The material blocks fair amount of wind and it retains body warmth very well. I would say that this is at least a mid to semi-heavy weight fleece. Performance wise, you could wear this jacket as your outer wear in all but windy conditions. The DWR is pretty good so it resist some light moisture...as compared to other plain cotton or poly sweatshirts which are basically sponges. This thing kept be very warm as a midlayer under REI's eVent Shuskan jacket when I did some early season snow boarding in the Colorado Rockies. The jacket is very breathable so you don't get swampy using it as a mid layer under a shell. The jacket has nice features, dual draw string cinches at the waist and hood, tapered sleeves so the wrist opening isn't flapping around, a functional hood, a good sized interior pocket and zippered outside pockets.
I have the BC.com wool hooded jacket that you refer to and it appears from the pictures that this is not meant as a replacement for that jacket. From the pics this looks more like a normal hoody and more floppy than the wool jacket that I have. The wool jacket is more for casual wear and not very good for active pursuits.
If you're a XXL, you can still pickup the wool jacket here: http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Backcountry-Siphon-Wool-Hooded-Jacket-Mens/BCC0178M.html?CMP_ID=SH_FRO001&CMP_SKU=BCC0178&mv_pc=r126
Just received my jacket a few days ago after getting a great price on SAC.
The fit on this is true to size compared to the older backcountry gear which normally ran small. I am 5'8 and 135lbs and the small fits perfectly.
I was initially hesitant on ordering this jacket as the neon orange wasnt my thing, but after receiving it, I kinda dig it! I think this would be a great mid-weight layering piece or a stand alone.

Does the hoody portion and the high neck get in the way at all when layering with a shell that also has a hood and high neck (zipped up)?...neck portion seems pretty high and full for this... Or do you just leave the top part unzipped and folded underneath the neckline? I want to layer it under an Arcteryx Stingray shell (neck fits pretty close to face).
I've been wearing this jacket everyday since I got it! Bike commuting, snow storm, and sledding last night with a -15 F windchill (ice breaker 200, 320 and this jacket) and Ive yet to be disappointed. Very wind and water resistant (yet to wear it in the rain, but it did swimmingly with snow) warm, and incredibly breathable. It has a great cut, tighter sleeves and narrow body so it looks great by itself and also is very functional under a shell. The hood and high neck are very functional and unlike others I've tried they still look good when there not in use. Only two complaints: 1, its too short. With arms above my head the jacket rides up well over my waist and when I bike with it I get to show off my lower back. 2, the fleece zipper guard gets caught every single time, so its nearly impossible to zip the jacket all the way up with a single hand. Both are annoying but definitely not deal breakers. The jacket performs great and looks even better. Add a couple inches and a better zip guard and I say hand down perfection.
actually stoic has become a focused brand, that came from the backcountry stoic jacket and other products we have developed. this is made in Canada, backed by a great Stoic guarantee, and supported by backcountry.com
I got this on thursday I've worn this thing all weekend and I love it. The material on the outside is ridiculously wind and water proof. Really thick material but very breathable. The inside is an ultra comfortable fleece that keeps you warm.
I'm 5'11'' 140 lbs and got a L and it fits great on a slim body like myself. I've got several comments on it and people can't believe I got it off Tramdock at a steal for $90.
Got this on steepandcheap.com for about $90. I've been looking for a good sweat shirt that isn't cotton and wind resistant. I'll let you folks know what its like.
I keep calling it a jacket even though it's a "sweatshirt." It is comfortable, soft and cozy to wear. I've had it for a day or so, but I could see myself wearing this around the lodge on the colder winter days, on the slopes in the early/late season and maybe even around the campfire while camping up in the mountains during the summer.
Some of you have requested comments on the fit/sizing. I am 6'0-6'1 and 210 with a slight pooch but still athletic (like most American guys right?) and the XL fits me very comfortably. I feel that I can wear a good fleece pullover underneath and still not feel too restricted. I am a 42L in suit jackets and the sleeves on the XL work great for me. Not too long but definitely not short. As for the length, it's just right for me as well, I have a normal length torso and it stops just below my waist.
Overall, I am thoroughly satisfied with this "sweatshirt" and feel like I will be wearing it as much as my Arcteryx Hercules...maybe....that is still my absolute favorite, but this will be up there.
This is a good looking, nice fitting fleece. I'm 5'6 130lbs and the small fits me really well in length and girth. I got the gray and orange and it's pretty sharp. The fleece is warm, feels as warm as the luft insulated jacket plus the tall collar an hood score extra points. The only thing I'd change is make the body a little more cut in the pits. The wider pits feels like it restricts movement a little and makes wearing it under a shell a little tougher... but makes layer under it a breeze. I paid the $150 for it, and it feels a little pricey, but I like it. I haven't seen it on SAC yet, but will keep my eyes out. Would be a steal for $80.
I love to put on a jacket and then go all day while backpacking. I put this on in the cooler morning and felt very comfortable and warm. Then we had some rain and this shed the rain very well. Then in the evening pulled the hood up and sat around the fire and felt very warm.
Got this off of SAC and could not be happier. It makes me look forward to the weekends so I can lounge around in this thing. Very comfortable, great workmanship, and very stylish. Have worn it outside in 25 degree weather and was still warm with just a long sleeved T-shirt underneath. Only small gripe would be that the zipper guard is a little too big and can hang out too much when not fully zipped. For the performance and comfort though I will deal.
I liked the fleece in the picture and liked it even more when it arrived yesterday. The color and design are well conceived and the fit is perfect ( 6.2" 180 size M), though the jacket could be improved all the more with some pit zips for ventilation. The audio port is a nice touch. It also hold up to the elements. 5/5
First, a confession, my name is Brian, and I am a jacket slut. You name a situation, and I've got a jacket for it. Down puffy - check; synthetic slightly less puffy - check; 3 layer pro shell - check; you get the point. This jacket replaces just about everything except for your hard shells. It's comfortable in a wide range of temps, I've worn it down to about 27 degrees and been perfectly comfortable with just a t-shirt underneath. It blocks enough wind to keep you warm, but breathes enough to make it a good choice for cold weather aerobic activity, like cross country skiing. I've worn it every single day since owning it, and have yet to be disappointed in any capacity. It's great outside, it's great around the house, and it's great for that sunday morning walk to the store to get more beer for football.
I got this for my b-day and is the best damn thing that I could've asked for. This guy has a nice athletic fit. I am 6'00", 175 and went with the large. It fits great and there is plenty of space to be able to layer underneath. I enjoy that it takes the nip out of the wind and is a sweet mid layer for me. The welded inside pocket is great, along with top quality in stitching. Plus it's made in CANADA! I got the gray and orange and it looks bad ass. I thought it would look a little nineties but it's not like that. If you are looking into a nice hoody to sport round town or to use a mid layer, look at this piece to satisfy your need to have the hottest piece of clothing this winter. Ohh, most importantly, it is soft- not the normal stiff fleece with other wind proof fleeces.
This thing's sick! The Polartec WindPro material is like a spongy, warm, windproof delight! I love the material and it goes perfect under a shell. I would give it 5 stars. but they put this zipper guard on the inside to protect your chin when you zip up, but the thing sucks! You have to almost hold the top together to zip up all the way....All in all, I'd buy another one. Wish they had better colors to.
Just got the jacket in the mail. The fabric is cool, seems durable, like the grayish color and orange but the cut is really short. I am 5'9" 150lbs and of normal proportion of leg to torso so i went with a medium and this is just too short to deal with. When I lift my arms you can see about 4 inches above my belly button! Would make for a really drafty layer in cold weather. The sleeves are snug too. Fine over a T-shirt but tight over a long sleeve shirt. Nice try.
This is an awesome garment.... I wear it a ton, its very insulated, comfortable, and looks great. The sizing is true, and if you want it a bit baggy I more...
Great product!!! It is super warm, looks sweet, and is very comfortable. Its nice for either chillin, or even if you are up on the hill and need some warmth more...
