What's in my bombshell sleeve, that's what...

What's in my bombshell sleeve, that's what I want to know. My friend told me it's an avalanche tracker...? Sounds pretty cool, but is this true? How does it work?

Best Answer Responded on

Your friend might be thinking of the RECCO system, which is a little metal reflector in some jackets and backpacks that bounces back the signal from a beacon that can be carried by helicopters or by rescuers on the ground. It's a very cool little piece of technology.

Unfortunately, this jacket doesn't have anything like that.

Responded on

That answer was entertainingly anticlimactic.

Responded on

Actually I believe it is the RECCO tracker! My jacket came in recently and has RECCO tags on it explaining the system. I was also wondering what that was in the sleeve, so I looked it up and the tracker appears to be the same size and shape as the object in the sleeve

Good jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I bought this jacket as a shell for the resort and to ski tour in. I have only used it a couple of times. I am 5'2" 115lbs and initially bought a small and an xs. I kept the small, since I wanted room to layer. It was borderline on what size to keep (I almost always an XS). The first time I used the jacket there was very wet snow. Everything was soaked, but I stayed nice and dry. I like all of the pocket choices. There is a little extra room in the neck to hood space, which I am not used to having but I think will be fine. The sleeves are a little long, but as a more petite person I am pretty used to that. The only major con is the wrist gaiters/thumb holes. I can't get the jacket on when I have my liner gloves on. I take my shell on and off a lot in the backcountry, so it is kind of annoying. I think I will end up cutting them out.

Can't wait to hit the slopes.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

This review is going to be only about fit and features because I have not had a chance to test performance. First off, I am 5'1", 120lbs and a pear shape. So like with every coat/jacket I have ever had this shell is a little big through the shoulders and a little tight around the hips because I am a woman and I have some curves. It isn't so tight that I can't zip it up and it hasn't been riding up on me but if it had a 2-way that would push it to 5 star status. The arms are a little long but it doesn't really bother me. It is better a little too long than a little too short. The wrist gaiters are awesome and I did not have any issues with the thumb holes that others have complained about. I really like the mesh lined, 2-way pit zips because I get super sweaty. My last jacket had the core ventilation but they weren't lined so I actually lost stuff from my inside pockets that fell out through the pit zips and I didn't know it. The color (light jade/dark jade) is really pretty. I like the dark and light tone. The hood is really deep and fits easily over my helmet. Overall I really like the jacket, it is a good value and I can't wait to test it out in the snow.

Wifes Favorite!

I got this jacket for my wife...even though she didn't ask for it. She now loves it. She cant' believe she used to use that old Blue Moutain Hardware she used to have. All the bells and wistles...Wrsit gaiters are probably her favorite feature!

Well Liked

The reviews are clearly mixed here, but I can say that my wife has loved her shell which we bought this winter. She likes the fit, she is very slim 5'7", the weather resistance and the color.

Responded on

Wow dude, another review regarding fit without mention of the size you ordered. Good job, this will be very helpful when choosing the right size of jacket for my girlfriend.

Responded on

Duly noted and good point. Medium. 5'7", 110 lbs with a medium weight insulating mid layer.

Agree - Disappointing

I loved this jacket at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. It's a great shell, kept the wind out! Even though the wrist gaiter thumb loops seemed to be stiched in the wrong place, meaning the placement was more for my middle and ring finger, I just twisted the cuffs and made it work because I liked the overall fit of the jacket! The hood fit well over my helmet, and still allowed decent peripheral vision. Yes, a cute fit overall. Too bad looks aren't everything. Small holes have started to appear between the stiching and the colored overlay is peeling off. Not extremely noticeable since it's located near the back right panel. Perhaps that's just where I generally hit during a fall. In any case, I expected higher quality from Stoic. Fix the seams and the wrist gaiters, then it might be great.

Good backcountry ski jacket

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

Bought this for my wife. She tried on several jackets and chose this for fit, color, and long time respect for stoic products. It is a shell with no insulation which is what you want for backcountry skiing. She usually wears a small, but to allow for layering a medium was necessary. The boysenberry/dark jade is a great color with good visibility. It has a comfortable cut and has held up well after one season of hard use. The zippered pockets are nice and well placed. The only aspect of this that does not seem well designed is the wrist gators. The location of the thumb holes makes them uncomfortable so she never uses them. Take one star off for that. Otherwise pleased in all ways.

Disappointing

I really tried to like this jacket in the dark Jade (which is really more green than the picture). The hood was just what I was looking for to cover my helmet. The wrist gaiters were fine, although the sleeves of the coat itself are definitely sized for a long-limbed gal. The problem was more with the quality of the coat material. The flaired out sides at the bottom (making it a more feminine cut) just didn't sit right and the powder skirt outline was visible in the back. Overall I thought the material and "welded seams" all over the place just looked cheap.

Great shell

I bought this jacket (white) about a year ago. It's comfortable, under-arm vents allow fantastic breathability, and the inside pockets are great for keeping tunes and cash safe. This jacket provides great protection from wind and water without being bulky or causing me to over-heat. Love it.

1) The most important question of all :does it match the pants? (Boysenberry color) http://www.backcountry.com/stoic-bombshell-insulated-ski-pant-womens
2) Is this considered a soft shell or hard shell?

Best Answer Responded on

Hey Rachel,

1) Yes, the colors will match.
2) This does not fall into the softshell category.

Cute and comfy

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I enjoy the look of this jacket as well as the overall fit, but the thumb holes are definitely misaligned, making them uncomfortable, and the collar seems to hit and rub my chin and face alot, also making it semi-uncomfortable. It's ok, probably wouldn't buy again.

Great Jacket!

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This coat is great. I had its predecessor for years and finally traded up. It stayed waterproof for 5+ years of HEAVY use. I love the new additions:powder skirt and wrist warmer (with thumb hole) fabric gasket. i usually wear a small and i am a MED in this coat.

Best jacket ever!

Seriously, an incredible jacket! I have worn it bicycling in a downpour, and backcountry splitboarding in 15 degree weather. So WELL designed! Very comfortable fit, monkey cuffs in sleeves are not tight even when reaching upwards. Snow skirt is very strong and stable - love how it snaps to my pants! Great pockets - adequate size, but easy to grab from. Excellent features, very comfortable. I normally wear a Med, but am very happy with a W's Large. I love the Boysenberry color - no risk of not being seen in trees.

Sweet jacket!

I went big, I like to stuff my downy under it when I get done skinning. I'm 5'4, 36 chest. I ordered a medium at first, it fit nicely but I really like the room for my shoulders and chest (and downey) with the large. Not too wild about the thumb hole wrist things but you can slide them up and they're not noticeable. All pockets are awesome! I like the deepness and the low positioning of the front two as well as the inner and outer chest pockets. The arm pocket is sweet for using a lift pass that scans. Powder skirt has two side loops but nothing for the back, the butt is where the snow goes, at least for me. This is my biggest complaint about the jacket, I am very happy with it regardless.

Stoic jacket warm, dry and super cute.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Tried snow boarding for the first time in Stoic ski suit. Very comfortable, dry and very stylish. Normally I don't spend this much $ on outdoor clothing for myself and was worried about buyer's remorse. Once it arrived and fit perfectly, I realized what a great bargain it was.

Fits great!

I am 5'10", slim, and have long arms. I got this jacket in a medium. This jacket fits very well, with very long sleeves and long in length. It also is a little bit stretchy, which is great for layering underneath and flexibility. It also is not too baggy or wide, and has a fitted shape, but is not tight on my broad shoulders. I would definitely recommend getting this jacket.

Responded on

I just ordered this with the help of your review! I'm also 5'10" ~130lbs. and I have Donkey Kong arms. I have a dark turquoise helmet and hot pink goggles that are dying for something better than brown to match! I hope the medium works for me.

Responded on

It should definitely fit then, the arms are super long which I love too. Glad my review could help you!
