The reviews are clearly mixed here, but I can say that my wife has loved her shell which we bought this winter. She likes the fit, she is very slim 5'7", the weather resistance and the color.

I loved this jacket at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. It's a great shell, kept the wind out! Even though the wrist gaiter thumb loops seemed to be stiched in the wrong place, meaning the placement was more for my middle and ring finger, I just twisted the cuffs and made it work because I liked the overall fit of the jacket! The hood fit well over my helmet, and still allowed decent peripheral vision. Yes, a cute fit overall. Too bad looks aren't everything. Small holes have started to appear between the stiching and the colored overlay is peeling off. Not extremely noticeable since it's located near the back right panel. Perhaps that's just where I generally hit during a fall. In any case, I expected higher quality from Stoic. Fix the seams and the wrist gaiters, then it might be great.
Disappointing

I really tried to like this jacket in the dark Jade (which is really more green than the picture). The hood was just what I was looking for to cover my helmet. The wrist gaiters were fine, although the sleeves of the coat itself are definitely sized for a long-limbed gal. The problem was more with the quality of the coat material. The flaired out sides at the bottom (making it a more feminine cut) just didn't sit right and the powder skirt outline was visible in the back. Overall I thought the material and "welded seams" all over the place just looked cheap.

Bought this for my wife. She tried on several jackets and chose this for fit, color, and long time respect for stoic products. It is a shell with no insulation which is what you want for backcountry skiing. She usually wears a small, but to allow for layering a medium was necessary. The boysenberry/dark jade is a great color with good visibility. It has a comfortable cut and has held up well after one season of hard use. The zippered pockets are nice and well placed. The only aspect of this that does not seem well designed is the wrist gators. The location of the thumb holes makes them uncomfortable so she never uses them. Take one star off for that. Otherwise pleased in all ways.
Great shell

I bought this jacket (white) about a year ago. It's comfortable, under-arm vents allow fantastic breathability, and the inside pockets are great for keeping tunes and cash safe. This jacket provides great protection from wind and water without being bulky or causing me to over-heat. Love it.

1) The most important question of all :does it match the pants? (Boysenberry color) http://www.backcountry.com/stoic-bombshell-insulated-ski-pant-womens
2) Is this considered a soft shell or hard shell?

Hey Rachel,
1) Yes, the colors will match.
2) This does not fall into the softshell category.

I enjoy the look of this jacket as well as the overall fit, but the thumb holes are definitely misaligned, making them uncomfortable, and the collar seems to hit and rub my chin and face alot, also making it semi-uncomfortable. It's ok, probably wouldn't buy again.

Does anyone know what the center back length or just back length is on this jacket? I would like to get a snowboarding shell and need it to be long enough in the back, my jacket that I have now is 28" I believe. Thanks!

Excellent shell: spacious hood fits over my beanie or helmet; long sleeves, powder skirt & monkey paws keep the cold wind OUT; fits great alone or with several layers under for warmth; AWESOME pockets for extra handwarmers, tissues, candy, camera, and ski pass, everything I need for an out of bounds day, family style! This shell will be going through the wringer. Thank you Stoic...I'm a bombshell in this baby!
Great Jacket!

This coat is great. I had its predecessor for years and finally traded up. It stayed waterproof for 5+ years of HEAVY use. I love the new additions:powder skirt and wrist warmer (with thumb hole) fabric gasket. i usually wear a small and i am a MED in this coat.
Best jacket ever!

Seriously, an incredible jacket! I have worn it bicycling in a downpour, and backcountry splitboarding in 15 degree weather. So WELL designed! Very comfortable fit, monkey cuffs in sleeves are not tight even when reaching upwards. Snow skirt is very strong and stable - love how it snaps to my pants! Great pockets - adequate size, but easy to grab from. Excellent features, very comfortable. I normally wear a Med, but am very happy with a W's Large. I love the Boysenberry color - no risk of not being seen in trees.
Sweet jacket!

I went big, I like to stuff my downy under it when I get done skinning. I'm 5'4, 36 chest. I ordered a medium at first, it fit nicely but I really like the room for my shoulders and chest (and downey) with the large. Not too wild about the thumb hole wrist things but you can slide them up and they're not noticeable. All pockets are awesome! I like the deepness and the low positioning of the front two as well as the inner and outer chest pockets. The arm pocket is sweet for using a lift pass that scans. Powder skirt has two side loops but nothing for the back, the butt is where the snow goes, at least for me. This is my biggest complaint about the jacket, I am very happy with it regardless.
Stoic jacket warm, dry and super cute.

Tried snow boarding for the first time in Stoic ski suit. Very comfortable, dry and very stylish. Normally I don't spend this much $ on outdoor clothing for myself and was worried about buyer's remorse. Once it arrived and fit perfectly, I realized what a great bargain it was.
Fits great!

I am 5'10", slim, and have long arms. I got this jacket in a medium. This jacket fits very well, with very long sleeves and long in length. It also is a little bit stretchy, which is great for layering underneath and flexibility. It also is not too baggy or wide, and has a fitted shape, but is not tight on my broad shoulders. I would definitely recommend getting this jacket.

It should definitely fit then, the arms are super long which I love too. Glad my review could help you!

HIKING into the backcountry. Who that has this jacket can tell me how well it worked in terms of staying dry and warm while hiking and then riding/skiing down? I am worried about keeping warm after a long steep hike...once you stop at around -20 it tends to get chilly...that is prob the min temp we will encounter.
Mike Cushing
Member since
Cassi, this is just a shell - it is not meant to keep you warm. The simple fact that it will block the wind will make it "feel" warm, however, it is not insulated at all. It is very waterproof, and breathable, but you'll still need ample mid/base layers if you're skiing in -20.
Nice, but TINY

I'm 5'6", 130 lbs, slim athletic build, totally a size M by the charts. Could only wear this jacket in M with a thin base layer under it, and it was too tight in the shoulders (reaching forward). Sleeves are indeed loooong. Even if this fit, I would still return it because it is manufactured incorrectly: as someone else mentioned, the inside cuffs with thumbholes are installed BACKWARDS. As in, on the wrong arms. :) Other things to know: good hood design, silky fleece lining inside collar, pit zips are MESH VENTS ONLY.

Size advice please: Petite but busty!
Hi, I'm 5'4", 125lbs, and 34D...can anyone recommend a size for me? I tend to wear Small as my shoulders are narrow and my frame is quite small, but sometimes have trouble with fit at the chest.
This looks a great jacket though so any advice on sizing would be really helpful!
Thanks!

I'm 5'5", 125 lbs, but 34A with medium shoulders... The small fits me perfectly, but I like a snug fit. I would recommend going up to a M for your bust size; I don't think it will look big on you! It's an awesome jacket!

I'm trying to decide between a Large or an XL for my wife. She's 5'9", 36C, 160. Does anyone who owns this jacket have some advice? Thank you!
kebp186182

I would go for the XL I'm 5'6 145 and the M was just a touch too tight the large will work just fine except the arms are a little long but otherwise the fit is pretty good and the jacket quality is great.

The bust fits just fine but tight in the shoulders and the waist/hip. If it doesn't fit send it back. These guys are great with returns.

OK, thanks but just to confirm, the Large works for YOU but you'd recommend the XL for my wife's sizes? Thanks!

I just got mine yesterday, very light and soft, good quality jacket, I got size M fit me perfect on the body, still have room for layers, I am 5'4, 125 lb. Yes, the sleeve are long for me, I still keep it, since I can roll up 2 inch on the sleeve, fit well, I like it, it will pack in small size and easy carry in the backpack... Most of my clothes are in small size, but this M fit well.

I am about the same sizes as your wife -15lbs, the M fits but is too tight in shoulders for layers. Hope that helps, Large should be fine I would think.

Don't know if you're still wondering about this, but I'm usually a M in outdoor gear, but I sized up to a L for this jacket. Fits great with enough room for layers!

I am 5'5" 120lbs and unfortunately, slightly small busted... by the measurements it seems, for the most part, I'd be a small, and pretty much all my other jackets are smalls, but I'm worried that the arms will be too short. Would I be swimming in a medium if most of my measurements match the small?
CodyScottCochrane

If I have heard one thing about these, its that the Arms are Long, have gotten complaints from shorter customers that say they are too long. I know many Taller females who love the fit of this. So unless you are really tall 6 foot +(In which case Torso Length would be more of an issue) this would be a great choice.

I am 5'5 and 115, 32B. I can do an XS but went with the small for a bit of extra length through the torso at the expense of a looser fit than I would like. (Note: the cut on this is quite a bit trimmer than most brands and the sizing is a bit smaller.) You would absolutely be swimming in a medium. The sleeves (they have gaiters with thumb holes) are slightly long on me but I don't have unusually long arms. I ordered the pink and the darker green. They are both quite dark colors. I think I like the pink better. I will return the green.

I am 5'3" and 120 lbs (also smaller in the chest region) and the size Small worked perfectly for me on the insulated Bombshell jacket. The XS was a bit short in length, and it would have been uncomfortable to add another layer if needed. I agree with Cody in that many of the Stoic products have longer sleeve lengths than many other brands out there.

There should be a tag inside the left hand-warmer pocket with care instructions.
Stoic recommends hand or machine washing with Nikwax TechWash and treatment with TX Direct wash-in. Hang dry only.
