Bottom Line: Bombshell: Ullr won't know what hit him.
Does anybody know what the actual jacket measurements are for sizes L and XL?
This would be the length of the jacket as measured from the chin down to the bottom of the waist, the width of the chest (when the jacket is laid flat), and the length of the sleeves (measured from the wrist to the shoulder).
It would actually be really helpful if they listed the actual measurements of the garment itself.
This jacket is bomber for your cold resort days.... It has nice insulation to keep you warm and pit zips in case you get to hot. Plenty of pockets for all the goodies. Also I got the purple color and it looks awesome!
Just got this Jacket and it has quickly become my favorite all around resort jacket. Just one layer underneath and you'll be warm on the coldest days. Unbelievably comfortable and really well made. Stoked to see where Stoic is going with their gear.

Hey, Im 6'4, pretty slim, and wasnt sure if i should go for the large of xl, I'd like it to fit well i.e. not too baggy, but was wondering if the sleeves would be long enough in a large.. any suggestions? and does it have a powder skirt?
Check out the sizing chart below the price. It has all the measurements you will need, including sleeve lengths. Also, there is a removable powder skirt.
I think this jacket is really ideal for resort skiing when you are maintaining a consistent climate on colder days with very little layering underneath. It's also the same jacket construction as the non-insulated version, so it's super waterproof for when thing (as they often do) get weird.
I own several of the stoic soft shells, so added this to the collection, but more for resort use...surprisingly tho, it runs smaller than the non insulated version, even when taking into consideration the need for just two layers with this, versus usual three layer combo for non insulated version...fits snuggly...the vintage colour scheme is wicked...plenty warm enough. Features on the stoic range, ie. gaiters, skirts, pocket combo, easy of snaps etc...is as good as it gets...great value for top quality product...
I'm 6'3", 195 lbs, with 42 inch chest and 33 inch waist. like a slightly relaxed but not baggy fit...do not like jackets taht are huge in the waist. Should I go for the Large bombshell? From teh size chart, a Lg might be small ih the chest for me, but XL would be too baggy I think.
It's been a long time since I used an insulated jacket for winter sports, and I'm glad I got this one. It is surprisingly waterproof, and breathable, packs small, and is perfect in a lot off different conditions with only one or two additional layers underneath.
Any tall thin guys have this jacket? I'm 6'3" 185 lbs, 42" Chest, 32" waist. I typically wear a large in most garments. I'm worried about the sleeve length (i wear a 16.5" by 34/35 shirt typically) of the large...any thoughts?
I wear a 16.5 x 34 shirt and the medium's sleeves are long enough for me. With a 42" chest, you may be able to go medium as well. The jacket is definitely long enough for someone of your height. The only reason to go large would be if you want to wear a very thick mid-layer underneath.
highly recommend this jacket. stoic makes some great quality gear and this jacket is really nice. high quality design, fits wells, and really warm - not too warm though, just enough to only wear a light layer underneath. i am 5'9 and 135lbs and the medium fits well, not too baggy but room for layers for sure. i could have pulled off a small probably but like the extra room. great price and i love the color and style. i got the black and green one, so don't get that one!
Received the Stoic Bombshell Insulated (Beehive color) a few weeks back - have yet to try it outdoors. My question is, the fabric seems very, very soft and smooth compared to the non-insulated Stoic Bombshell (wife's - different color), and my Stoic Bombshell Bib (Deep/Vintage). Those two have a thicker, more durable feeling to them. Why is it that the Bombshell Insulated is that way - or did I receive a jacket that was possibly not treated??
@bill hartlieb: Hmmm I'm pretty sure the specifications for the Bombshell Insulated is "[shell] Bombshell (3-layer, mechanical stretch)" - the exact same description for the non-insulated Bombshell. I can understand somewhat if the Bombshell BIB used a little heavier material, but even the non-insulated Bombshell jacket seems to have a heavier material than the insulated jacket.
bombshell bib is heavier face fabric for more durability. the three layer materials are heavier because of the internal layer. the bombshell insulated is only two layer - outside shell and membrane.
I bought this jacket because I ski in the Northwest above treeline which means wind and cold/wet. What's important is insulation, wind blocking, waterproof and comfortable to wear. This jacket handles all this and more. Very comfortable to wear, plenty of movement and the screened/lined pit vents are hard to find in any jacket. The collar/hood is also adjustable so no tightness or binding around your neck when not using the hood. The fabric is also soft and quiet. Great product. Would be nice to have a goggle lens pocket/net on the inside of the jacket at chest level.
Does the hood on this jacket detach, or fold easily into a collar. I only wear a hood in the worst weather, and hate having one flapping around behind me, so prefer jackets where they detach. But if this one is easily snapped down into a regular collar, then it might be ok. So many jackets these days have minimal ability to do away with the hood. Otherwise, the jacket looks terrific.
The hood is fixed, but I keep mine down with the drawcord cinched stays put wihtout any flapping or annoyance. The liner color is also more visable than it looks from the photos, particularly in the hood.
My Stoic Bombshell just arrived and was wondering why it has so many seams? They look like places that might have an opportunity to fail, delaminate, or leak. Also, the color is not what is represented online. I bought the Deep/Metal/Vintage which looks blue online and quite teal in reality.
your bombshell will not leak. the welded seams are more reliable than sewn, and seamtaped. this colorway is tonal but uses the same patterns as those with a highlight seam.
Sometime browsers don't support the color "code" associated with the pics uploaded. Stoic is a good brand - if it leaks you can reseal them (seams always provide for an opportunity for leaks) and if it gets on your nerves, send it back to BC. I would say give it a run though - generally,Stoic does not disappoint.
As plenty of other great minds have said, this is the ideal resort jacket for temps below 30 degrees. I use it all the time for snowboarding at resorts. I use only a 150 merino wool (stoic of course) under the jacket and it gets me by perfectly. The fit is athletically baggy, if that makes scenes. I am 205, 6 foot, 34" waist, 45" chest. So I have a hard time fitting into most jackets or shirts for that matter. I have this jacket in XL and it is perfect. Never restricts my range of motion and does not look steezy ultra baggy either. You could were it to your office job and not look to out or place. The powder skirt is much better than the first years model. It sits lower and does not get in the way. The wrist gaiters are nice and tight but also stretch the right amount. The material itself is quite stretchy too, but has yet to let in any water. I could not be happier with this jacket. Just don't use it for anything warmer than 40 degrees or you will be sweating like crazy!
I am 5"9 155 and I wear an XL. I like to rock it a bit baggy. I would definitely recommend a lg for you unless you like your gear to fit tight. Go large and you'll be stoked!
I originally bought Gen 1 of this jacket in black/neon green and absolutely loved it..then I lost it. So I bought the Gen 2 also in Black. First the good stuff - I love the exterior material, general design and insulation level of this jacket. The shell is softer than Goretex and has a nice texture. The insulation is perfect as an all day winter jacket except the coldest of colds. The new black/green combo is pretty nice.
Here is what I don't like - I *think* the fit this year is a little larger. It might be my imagination but I don't recall the jacket hanging so much on me. I am 5-9, 170lbs, 33in waist, slight athletic build. I bought the Gen 1 jacket Large and it was a perfect fit for what I wanted - slightly roomy but I wouldn't call it baggy. Gen 2 feels more baggy. In addition, 1 stitch inside already came loose which is somewhat annoying for a new jacket. All in all I still like the jacket but I don't love it like my Gen 1. It's possible the Medium may now be a better fit on Gen 2 but I don't want to bother ordering another
I recently bought the large and am now in the process of exchanging it for a medium. I'm 6', 170lbs, 34" waist and thought it would be a perfect fit based on what others are saying. Instead, I think the medium will be a better fit and still allow for a mid-layer layering peice underneath.
height and weight is not enough.... check your body dimensions against the chart for size and fit... just below the 'select options' in the gray box. this helps you define what a standard fit is. if you want looser for fashion, or you plan growing, go up a size.
At 5 feet 10 inches and 150 pounds, there is no doubt in my mind that you at least need the Medium. I am the same height and weight as you, and frequently I go with size Large. A small would really be way too tight and uncomfortable for you. Hope this helps. Good Luck. Jeff Levin
Fit, function, looks all work for me. I like the yellow color with the blue inside. Almost a school bus yellow - not a neon yellow. The zippers are the same blue of the inside with black zipper pulls. Overall, I like the scheme with my black pants.
Perfect amount of insulation for resort ski jacket. I've only used it for a 4-day ski trip, but had varying conditions during that trip. The days the sun was out and the wind wasn't really blowing, I went with a only long sleeve 150 IceBreaker underneath and that was perfect. When it was snowing and blowing I added a Marmot PowerTec Fleece over the IceBreaker and it was perfect. Was still able to layer without feeling packed in to the shell at all. Sorry, I can't say that I used the hood over my Smith Variant helmet. I liked the sleeve gaitors but I did actually pull my thumbs out of them when putting on my ski gloves. I like my gloves a little snug so with the gaitor was a little restrictive, but still helped in keeping out the snow from your wrists.
For me, the weight and fit were just what I looking for. I'm 5'10", 170 lb with an athletic build and the M was perfect. Roomy enough for layering but not baggy. The length was perfect. All the zippers and pockets worked great.
I knocked off 1-star because there may be a couple of slight issues with quality. One patch of the shell material on the front of the jacket was a little off in color. Especially in indoor lighting, but in natural light I did not notice it, so I decided not to return it. And I am typically extremely picky (because I don't make these purchases often). Also, there was a little fraying and loosening of the threads on the inside lining, but I just snapped off the loose threads and I don't think it will be an ongoing problem. I'm just saying that for you guys that really live in your jackets and ski a lot more than I do.
I am happy and I do recommend it. In fact, looking a the women's version for my daughter.
I've been wearing mine for 2 seasons now and thought I'd give my long term review. I'm quite happy with it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a jacket in this price point.
Pros: the fit, the fabric, perfect amount of insulation, best wrist gaiters ever, good fit for climbing Cons: Their old color schemes were terrible, the snow skirt was a bummer, hood is pretty snug with a ski helmet.
The fit may be my favorite part. As a thin 5'9" 155 lbs (i wear the M), it's hard to find a jacket with a good athletic fit that's not the $500 Arc'teryx ones. Like most Stoic gear, the fit is good for trim folks and gives really good range of motion, it actually worked well for cool weather climbing as well as skiing since it doesn't limit your motion at all. The trim fit does make it a bit harder to stuff multiple layers underneath. When I'm bundling up for sub 0 degree days, I end up looking like stuffed sausage, but the range of motion is still good comfortable (you just look silly).
The fabric is good. I haven't had it in a bad rainstorm, but it's shed 2 seasons of snow from the Wasatch without a problems and has be fine in 20 minutes bursts of light rain. The fabric is soft and quiet and is way more comfortable fhan one of those traditional Gore-Tex hardshells. It's not stretchy at all, but the cut allows it to move like it is. The durability has been pretty good so far. It's held up with minimal wear after I've spent 2 full seasons riding in it every weekend, but I babied it when I took it climbing and camping (I was terrified what the Moab sand would do to the water-proofness). I got a 1/2" cut from a tree, but the slice has not grown since the incident.
The wrist gaiters are the best of any jacket I've tried on. The thumb hole isn't all the comfortable, but the gaiters wrap perfectly around your wrist and keeps the sleeves in place.
The insulation is great for resorts, but is a bit much for really aerobic activities. I had to shed it every time I'd skin up in the backcountry, but that was fine when layered with a windshirt underneath. For resorts, it's perfect all day when layered with a fleece (i use the Patagonia R2).
The hood is a bit small. I have a relatively standard ski helmet and it's a snug fit with the hood and the body pulls up when you look over your shoulder. Without the helment, the hood is perfect. It fits comfortably over my Petzl Elios climbing hemlet.
The snowskirt isn't so good. It sits a bit high, so does more to pull up my layers to my lower back and gives the snow more bare skin to touch. I now leave it zipped in, but never actually zip the snowskirt up.
Their color schemes have gotten a bit better than mine, I have the old black with lime green trim. I didn't think it'd be too bright, but the all the zippers and the liner is super bright and stands out more than I expected. Great for camping and technical use, but not so good for wearing to work and looking like a professional cubical worker. Being able to wear it to work
6' and 195lb and the XL fits perfectly. Very similar to the old welder insulated in fit and feel. The yellow is a mustard color and really cool. Thick enough that I can use it alone and thin enough that I can layer under. The ONLY thing that concerns me is that the wrist cuffs limit the number of choices I have for layering-would need to be a size L or really thin cuff. Other than that, I'm selling my Arc'teryx Scorpion jacket now that I have this--for a waterproof jacket, this is very soft and light compared to the heavy rubbery feel of the Arc'teryx. This is my second Stoic jacket and I have had great experiences with the brand. This feels true to size.
I hate ordering online becuase you never know really what you are getting, but this turned out to be a good decision. Great jacket, price is better than anything else out there, look on steep and cheap 40-50% off. I went with the XL and it fits perfect for me. Im 180 lbs 6'1 and I was worried the jacket would be to baggy and not long enough but the length is great not short at all and slightly loose fitting but that is how I wanted it. If you want a tight fit go for large and if you really want it tight I guess medium, but you will look lame in a skintight jacket. To each his own I guess. The black is almost a very dark navy blue too. but still black. Great build quality with every feature, so dont spend $800 for something else thinking it's better cuase it costs more, they are just overcharging because some will pay it...don't do it!!! Try this first
just arrived. love the jacket. lots of nice features. very comfortable. rubberized main front zipper is a bit hard to operate, but I can deal with it. love the fact that the powder skirt is removable because I plan to wear this for many other activities besides skiing. I'm 5 10", 180 lbs and the size L fits excellently. Just a tiny bit roomy, but i think that's perfect. I can wear it as is on cool days, or with an R1 fleece layer underneath for colder days. Highly recommended.
I am 5'7" 125, and the small is perfect for me. It comes down pretty far and the sleeves are a little long. one interesting thing about this jacket is that it tapers at the bottom, so if you have wider hips, maybe size up. The beehive color is a mustard yellow and the interior is completely blue, which is rad. This jacket is really warm, terrific at blocking wind, and the arm vents are well-placed for dumping excess core heat. The outer material is durable, and I think it would take a really intense crash in trees to rip the 3 layer Bombshell material. The shoulders are well-articulated, which allows for ample ease of movement in this jacket. Overall, really impressed with the bombshell.
I had hesitated to get this for my son because I was worried the welded seams wouldn't hold up to the abuse of ski racing training. But went ahead and did it anyways, and am very glad I did. He has had no problems with durability and is very glad for the warmth on cold afternoons on the mountain. The fit of the L is pretty much perfect for him (5'11", 180) and he really likes the soft, comfortable feel. Now my other son is begging for one.
Keeps you warm and dry (ching! ching) while not being too heavy (ching!). The hood comes in handy when it's windy or wet (ching!). Looks good and feels great!
This is a great jacket for cold ski days. The fabric is soft and super quiet and sheds water well. The waterproof zippers totally block any wind from whistling in. Great pockets, both internal and external. Hood fits over my Smith Variant Brim helmet. My wife bought the womens' version last year (and a second color this year), now I don't have to be jealous. Sizing is true, I'm 6'1", 190 pounds, 34" sleeve and the Large fits me perfectly
