Whether you’re heading for Wasatch depths or Alps gnar, the waterproof breathable Stoic Bombshell Bib wields comfort and fit like Nature wields her elements. Fully-welded construction paired with mechanical stretch fabric creates a dynamic storm fortress that won’t inhibit movement, and the removable softshell bib offers options for changing conditions. Lock down the zippered gaiters when the day looks deep, and bust open the mesh-backed inner-thigh vents when it’s time to hike that line for one more ride. The Bombshell Bib’s Keprotech-reinforcements stand up to ski edges, crampons, and rock out cropping, and the bib suspenders adjust for deep or shallow days and the waist tabs offer another line of customization. These bibs love everything from hiking to riding the lifts, so Stoic’s 3-D ergonomic fit creates plenty of moving room for boot packing and skinning, without weighing you down in fabric.

Bottom Line: The bulletproof, waterproof breathable answer you’ve been pining for.

Extremely water resistant, rugged, durable, stylish and overall very solid. Skied them in the Northwest on some of the wettest days I've ever experienced and stayed pretty darn dry, while everyone else was wearing rain pants and still getting soaked. Had some issues with the bib connection zipper coming undone but took a little epoxy to the attachment piece and it's not going anywhere. Definitely impressed, and for the Stoic price you can't beat these bibs

These pants are sick, but i'm not sure if i should go with

These pants are sick, but i'm not sure if i should go with a small or a medium. I'm about 5'7" and 140 lbs. I wear a size 29 in jeans and they fit comfortably with just a little room. Any ideas?

Good experience

By:
December 21, 2010

Use it for skiing primarily. I am 172cm/65kg, generally wear 30" waist jeans, and the size M is just right on me wearing it over padded protective shorts. The softshell part a little bit loose, but its nice for unrestricted freedom of movement and excessive upper body heat transport.
Smooth and sturdy bombshell material, no problems with tree-branches so far.
Waterproof, breathable but when it gets really cold (-25C and lower) I can feel wind-chill, so good layering is a must.
Full set of outer pockets. Bottom protective panels do protect from the ski edges due to the big and though-out coverage area. The gaiters are generous and accommodate any boot, but there is no way to make it sealed when it's deep.

My personal favorite - two bib pockets. Walkie-talkie, digicam, spare gloves etc, no need for backpack on resorts now. And I'm not afraid of broken ribs cause it's securely stored in warmth on belly, and not dangling around in my outer shell pockets and not interfere with my skiing. Bib-to-bottom zipper problem solved by couple of stitches, not a big deal but might be improved.

Issues I'd like to modify:
- the bib straps with velcro panels are folded towards the body, and the doubled part (especially the seam at the strap's end) is pretty thick and annoying right over my clavicle. I think to fold it towards the outer shell is more natural.
Also the straps "Y"-stem on the back could be ~10cm higher to make them more stable on the shoulders.
- bib-pants zipper tab fixation (may be some velcro).
- gaiters width adjustment (velcro flap?)
- outer pockets zipper pull-tabs are too subtle. I can hardly feel it in my ski gloves while trying to find it blindfold.
- side vent zippers, w/o mesh (could be nice for vent and to have access to your knees).

Not too much, though.

Having several Stoic garments now I can say that the fit is the biggest challenge buying Stoic. If it fits you - it's worth it (don't forget about SAC and geartrade).

I have some Larges - Tang color. Skiied in them once - just too long for me (unless I have ski boots on).

I'd sell them, as rolling them up is just goofy and there is no way to shorten them properly. Shoot me a note.

Finally nice fit, but as always, some serious flaws

By:
January 17, 2011

I'll start with the fact I liked the material due to its strechy nature. In reality, the fabric is not very waterproof. It seemed to me that no DWR was used because the first days out with them, any precip that landed on them soaked right in.

They also have weak wind-blocking capabilities. On some gusty days off the Aiguille du Midi, I was quite frigid.

I do like the détachable bib part. It helps to keep the mid section warm and hold stuff like a beacon (yes I put it in my pocket).

On to the biggest fail: all the snaps are basically useless. The other day I post-holing up a couloir and every few steps i had to stuff the inner liner into my boot straps to keep it from coming up and snow from falling in my boot.

It's shit like that proves very little real-world R&D went into the product. Either that or they just don't care.

Overall, you get what you pay for. It's cute to see their high MSRP, but the fact that these are available so cheaply gives an indicator of their real value.

Great Backcountry Ski Pant/Bib

By:
November 19, 2010

Bombshell pants have a lot going for them. They're waterproof, comfortable, durable and look good.

These pants have held up well for, even after putting them through some rigorous days last year: think dragging skis while crawling through dense mountain maple and scrub oak. Or climbing up and down 4th class rock outcrops to get to the top of a chute.

Bib option is great for keeping snow from going up my back on deep pow days, otherwise I usually leave the bib attachement off.

Best bib I have ever had

By:
January 10, 2011

The leg cut/seams are nicely articulated for easy of movement. I love the softshell upper section, breathable and very easy to move around in. The material is nice and lightweight... but that also means it provides not real insulation so you will have to layer underneath (I just wore it 10-15 F and 20 mph winds and it was a little chilly with a pair of thermals underneath).

For freedom of movement you can see how easy it is for my to squat down this video of me (I'm wearing protective padded shorts underneath) -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBBpTchyCEA

I love the bib pockets (fit my phone and valuables easily and comfortably) and the reinforced leg cuff (I was tend to shred them as my legs are short at 30" inseam and the cuffs of my pants tend to drag when I walk).

The sizing is true to size... which means size up for most Americans who don't realize that their waist is actually is 3-6 inches larger than the number on their pants (Gap, Old Navy, Levis, Dockers, etc all do this to make us feel better). I'm 5'9 150 lbs with a slim waistline and the Medium fit me perfectly even with a pair of padded protective shorts underneath (I do have big thighs though as I can free weight squat 300 lbs).

These are my favorite pair of bib pants out of the several models (Burton, Oakley, Sessions, Arcteryx, Bonfire) I've tried/used over the past decade.

A medium. I'm 5'7" about 148lbs. 29 waist. By the sizing chart, it says you should get a small. Let's just say I had trouble zipping it on. I returned them last week for a medium. Hopefully they ship today.

November 11, 2010

I'm 6'1 175lbs large fits perfect
UPDATE: I bought last seasons Bombshell bibs and returned them because they were to big, so this season I got the correct size and after using them (not just trying them on in my house) they didn't seem to be the same. First of all the zipper that connects the bib to the pant is worthless!! I coudn't even get then pants on without the zipper coming apart which I would hate to have that happen while they are in action unless you want a couple chest pockets hanging from your shoulders. Also on a cold or windy day you will need some good layers as you can feel it. These are otherwise great pants but, unfortunatley I'm returning them not what I was expecting after the changes.

So I really want a pair of these, partly because I'm a fan

So I really want a pair of these, partly because I'm a fan of the Stoic quality, and partly because Stoic products fit me very well. However, there are no more left in my size (L), with none coming in on the horizon.
So, you have Arc'teryx, which costs a gazillion $$, or North Face, which seems to no longer be the quality it once was... and other than that, I haven't tried any other brands in a while.

Anyone out there have a recommendation of other brands that have a similar fit & quality to Stoic?

awesome bibs

By:
November 14, 2010

I got a pair of last season's bibs in the tangerine color (they had white zippers last year, and IMO, looked much better than with this year's black zippers) and they were great for the little time I used them in South America this past Southern winter. The two pickets on the bib are great. I generally used one of those two pockets for my beacon, instead of wearing the harness that comes with it — much more streamlined and less bulky than using the beacon harness! I also tried putting a small digital camera in one of those pockets, and my sweat went right through into the pocket, so I do not recommend using those pockets for an iPod or digi cam, or anything like that. They're not quite as windproof as I would like — on the coldest and windiest of days, the wind can definitely be felt through them, but with some nice insulation underneath, it's no big deal.As far as durability goes...we'll see. In just two weeks my edges did some work on the cuffs, but nothing that a bit of the silver tape can't fix.And finally, style. I love the look, and the compliments didn't stop coming on.I'm totally stoked on stoic!(Orange pants in photo or the stoics)

Oh, and I liked them enough to order another pair in black for this season! Thumbs up

Michael, the zipper holding the bib on seems to be the same as last years (which was never great, but it does stay on, though I do have to fix it every time I wear them (it usually slides open an inch or two while wearing them...)

I can confirm after having both now, that this years isn't the same. I thought last season's pants were great they were just to big for me so I returned them and tried this season's and I was surprised they made the change. I could feel the wind and cold go right through them.

Update: The material they made the 2010-11 model out of is totally different from the 2009-10 model. I would consider the old model to be a hardshell, and are relatively thick (not as thick as GoreTex XCR, but thick), compared to this years model which is super thin and light and soft (definitely closer to a softshell, on the spectrum.)

Seeing as I complained a bit of the wind resistance on last years thicker, burlier model, I'm a little worried about this years. Hopefully they'll stand up to heavy winds and big dumps. I'll update in a couple of months, hopefully with good news...

Pant Gators

By:
November 22, 2010

I've had my Stoic Bibs for a season now. I like the waterproofing on them. Bib works pretty good. Really like the neon trim on the black ones. I would like to see the vents be longs and open wide. They are always hot skining or hike verses my other pants. Also the Gators on these bibs suck! They have a slick smooth plastic material at the cuff. Which slides right off a ski boot. Also there is No way to tighten the Gators if its to big. These are from last year, Hope they made some changes this year.

only had them on the mountain one time but they were great. was heading into an unknown area that looked like we did not want to be in, so decided to hike out. was happy to have the vents because I was starting to feel like a thanksgiving turkey in the oven. pockets are great but with that said the two front pockets are very deep and you can lose your keys pretty easy, which I did. tore the whole car apart and everything out to find that the keys were in my pocket, which I did check first. seem to be well built, and will write more later after I put them through a season of skiing tight glades.

Awesome bibs

By:
December 11, 2010

These bibs are fantastic. The fit does run a little small so keep that in mind. I'm 5'8", 35" waist and I went with the large; glad I did instead of the medium as I'm sure they wouldn't have fit. I have plenty of wiggle room left and feel the fit is just about perfect. I was worried about the inseam length, I have a 30" inseam and was concerned, even with boots on, that these would be too long for me at 32.8" inseam for the large. No cuff dragging walking through the parking lot.The build of these bibs is awesome. They are light but incredibly waterproof. Lots of pockets to stow gear which is nice. I feel the cuffs fit great around ski boots, can't complain there. Overall I'm very pleased with these bibs, looking to get the Bombshell jacket based on how much I like these bibs.

Fit Small

By:
November 29, 2010

I really wanted to like these, but they fit really small. I wear a 32 and the M was tight in the butt and legs, and the waist was borderline. Medium in any other pants I own are loose on me, so this is definitely an anomaly. Can't tour in tight pants.Size up, waaay up.This review refers to the previous year (09/10) pants.

They are built really nice, and are light weight, if they fit, I think they would be great.

great bibs

By: Backcountry.com Employee
November 29, 2010

I'm a huge fan of these bibs! The material is lightweight, quiet, fully bombproof, the bib design is perfect (there when you need it gone when you dont), they look pretty sharp. The softshell material on the zip-out bib is breathable so your torso can dump some heat even when fully zipped. They have well thought out features like quick adjust waist tabs, mesh backed vents, and big keprotech patches so they'll hold up to all the edge banging beater turns you make. There are only a few minor gripes I have: gaiters need to be tighter with better silicone. Less/softer velcro with only one snap tab for the gaiter. Why no 3/4 or full zip sides? Ditch the flaps on the seat pockets. So far I have been very impressed with these - they breathe well on tours and keep me dry in the deep. Overall 9/10.
EDIT: wind goes right through these! great if you're working hard but not so great sitting on a lift

Love these bibs for storm days. The Bombshell material is really lightweight and un-restrictive, and despite initial concerns about the fabric’s durability due to fact that they’re so lightweight, they’ve proven tough enough for shrubs, ski edges, and other pant-tearing nasties. The removable bib does a great job of sealing out the elements on deep days, and the Bombshell breathes surprisingly well—never ever approached overheating. Also, the bright orange makes it nearly impossible for touring partners to lose sight of you.

Sweet Bibs

December 12, 2010

These Bibs felt a little tight at first but are now quit comfortable after only a few days of wearing. The 20K water proofing isn't 100% water proof, but even on a very wet day I stayed dry underneath. Not much else to say... they are pretty awesome.

Oh.. but one more thing... if you are thinking of getting these bibs in Orange with the Marmot Genesis Jacket in Blue... don't. I already have that outfit. Pictured below.
