on my 3rd pair since 2008

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit:True to size
    • Size Bought: small

I've own 3 pairs of these bottoms and for the price they hold up just the same as other merino bottoms. I had issues on an older pair blowing out in the knee but (fingers crossed) that this pair lasts a bit longer with getting tossed into the washing machine as much as it does. This runs true to size IMO because I can't stand long underwear digging into my side while ski touring.

Also, I made my wife (liz kuz) write this review and she's the best.

    Bargain bonanza

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:Runs large
    • Size Bought: small

It's a tad loose, compared to other small tights, but like a previous reviewer said, fold the waistband over and it's perfect. It's thin, yet perfect for the colder nights out running in SoCal, lately (low 50's). I love the thick cuff at the bottom of the legs, keeps it in place. Cause its a thin merino fabric, it breathes well and dries quickly. I've been throwing on a pair of pants over it before and after my trail runs. My only regret is that I should've bought another pair for under $24.

    Not even usable as designed

    • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
    • Fit:Runs small
    • Size Bought: XS

I have a couple of pairs of the regular (not 150) merino bottom from Stoic and absolutely love them. But the regulars are rarely available in my size (XS) so I bought the 150s thinking I'd be getting a similar product at a different weight. Nope. These are completely unwearable.

The inseam must be ridiculously short because if I have the cuffs where they should be (on my ankles, of course) then the crotch hits mid-thigh. Let me emphasize here that I do not have long legs. The regular Stoics fit like a glove and the crotch hits my crotch. Imagine that.

A couple of other things to consider: these have less stretch and the bottom is not gussetted. So even if you manage to get these to your crotch, you'll have less ability to move freely and a seam running up your bum.

Now I have to pay return shipping to send these horrible beasts back, which is a total bummer. It's Backcountry's own brand and if they can't have the fit/sizing consistent between similar items then that should be their problem, not mine. Very disappointed.

Cool base layer perfect for hiking

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit:Runs small
    • Size Bought: XS

Purchased these long underwear along with the matching top before departing on a long weekend coastal hike. The weather ranged from 35-50F so I wanted to have an extra dry layer that would keep me warm when I was out of the sun. These leggings are incredibly comfortable and kept me warm and dry throughout the whole day!
My only issue is they run a little tight. I recommend getting a size up, unless you want something fully form fit. I'll probably be getting a second pair in a Small and giving them a try for warmer weather skiing.

Great pant, a bit too baggy after wear

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:Runs large

These pants/leggings are great and perfect for what I do. I am a snow maker at a ski resort so I need layers that keep me warm, but allow moisture to breathe. I've worn these in the elements a few days. They are great to wear under my carhartts (I hate wearing anything thick) and they keep my legs warm and allow sweat to breathe. I really enjoy these.
I do have to give 3 stars for the fit. They are too tight in the leg and far too big around the waist. I typically wear a large.. I am long legged and pretty straight shaped. I found these to ride down... sooo annoying. I am pulling my pants up all the time when I am wearing these as pants!!!!!

    Comfortable, soft and warm

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:True to size

These aren't leggings--they're a pant so they will be fitted initially, but after a day of wearing them they get slouchy. Very warm and comparable to my Helley Hansen warm pants. Price was right and I'm not disappointed. Though I did have to roll the waistband to make the fit and rise more comfortable.

    Super comfort, didn't fit great

    • Familiarity:I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit:Runs large

    From the gift recipient:

Run a little large and baggy in the crotch. Had to return. Recommend sizing down in these bottoms. They’d probably better fit someone with longer legs. (I’m only 5’3” and size small were a bit baggy) Very comfortable material though!

    Tight in the wrong places

    • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
    • Fit:True to size

I ordered the Medium. I'm 5'6" and have a 27 inch waist. I'm sure they're warm and the make seemed solid. But these pants were too tight around my calves and too lose around my waist. These were not the stretchy, more form fitting, legging type fit I was hoping for, so I returned them.

    Constantly hitching these things up

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:Runs small

I theoretically really like these pants - they are indeed warm and light as the other reviewers said. I bought a size small thinking they'd be super stretchy but not so, and on my 5'9 slim frame I end up yanking them up all the time. I suppose it's my fault for not just returning them for a larger size (which is a hassle as I'm in Canada), but even at an appropriate length they're not quite as stretchy as I'd like. So maybe order on the large size to avoid that problem?

Never taking them off....ok just kidding

I love these things so much that I wear them as sleeping pants, tights and of course when I go skiing. These thermals are so warm that I don't have to wear more than my ski pants on a 20 degree day! I love the softness of it too they are no itchy or scratchy at all. The colors are awesome and bright and they keep me dry when I am touring or hiking. Overall this is an effective thermal and I would recommend them. I am about 5'4" and my waist is 26 and I got the smalls and they are a bit tall so I just roll the tops down and they fit perfect!

      DaughterHouse Stamp of Approval

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Got these for the lady friend over the holidays. Here's what she has to say:

I was a little hesitant about these pants at first because the fabric feels so thin but after the first time I wore them I felt silly for ever doubting them. I wear them skiing and they work perfectly under my snow pants, keeping my legs warm while allowing them to breath. I even wear them as leggings on cold days when I don?t feel like wearing real pants. Overall I am very satisfied, I couldn?t ask for more, especially at this price.
