  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I love this shirt , I have three of them but the last time I washed them I noticed one has small holes in the back of it . I have only had it for 8 months . They do run on the large , The first one I bought I got a medium It was to big so the next one I got a small and it fit great.

Great purchase

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Purchased this on sale as a base layer for some of my cold weather runs. As others mentioned, it was a little itchy when I first tried it on. After washing it was a little better, but during my first run I never noticed anything but comfort!

This shirt is GREAT! It almost worked too good, I wore it by itself on a 48 degree morning run and was sweating by the time I got 2 miles in. It was sunny that day, but I wasn't expecting to heat up so quick. Incredibly lightweight, the thumbholes are nice for keeping the shirt comfortably in place when wearing under other layers. I originally got a medium based on other reviews- it was a bit big. In fact, the small was a little long on the sleeves but a much better fit than the medium. I am 5'9 and about 148lbs.

Also, Back Country's customer service has been INCREDIBLY awesome whenever I've had to make returns or have had other issues. They are my new favorite outdoor/fitness company.

Jump aboard the wool train

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Fantastic base layer. Not too warm and not too cold. I bring this layer touring all the time. When its really cold I throw my shell over this and am good to go on the up. The chest pocket is a nice touch, though I rarely use it. The zip is large and comfortable / doesn't chafe your neck. The merino wool magic keeps the shirt relatively funk free on week long backcountry trips. Did I mention thumbholes? There isn't a thing I would change about this shirt.

Great Baselayer at a great price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Keeps you warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather.
I'm 6'1" 160lbs and the medium fits great.

Pick 'em up while you can

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I love these shirts. A great value on it's own right, but especially when they pop up on Steep & Cheap. I got one in Charcoal and Basin Blue. Both look and fit great. I'm 5'10" 130 and a small has a little room to spare.

As others have said - it's a great base layer or can be worn on it's own on days that aren't so frigid.

Pick one up while you still can.

Style, Warmth, Budget Minded Enough Said

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Another awesome gift after adversity and one that restores my hope in high performance tech wear at low budget pricing. Love the stylish look while giving special attention at keeping warm and moisture free while skinning in the backcountry. Everyone needs at least one of these in their backcountry warmth clothing arsenal.

I'm 6' 175 lbs and the medium works out great!

Wore Out my Old Stoic after 7 years

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is the second Stoic 150 Bliss I have owned. The first is now so threadbare that I can see through it. My wife has darned it so many times that it looks nubby. BUT... it has always been my go to hiking shirt. I have worn it in 20 degree weather and in 90 degree weather. Above 15k feet and in death valley. It has seen snow, rain and hail. No other shirt I have owned has been through so much and given such superlative service for so many years. The thumb holes are a nice touch, as is the drop tail shirt bottom, and the napoleon breast pocket has always held my mp3 player.
This is one fine shirt.
Now I have to part with it, but I have a new friend -- my royal blue Stoic 150. And it is as true to the tradition of the old one as I could want.
If you are looking for a nicely priced quality merino ( with a touch of poly pro for durability) hiking shirt, then look no further. This is the one you have been looking for. I fully expect to get even more years out of this one because of the touch of polypro.
The large fit my 6'3" 180lb frame nicely.

Confused about What size to order my boyfriend. He has the stoic Merino long sleeve hooded shirt and loves it. He got a large and it is bigger then he expected so I was thinking maybe medium for this one but some say it runs big and some say it fits true to size so I am not sure. He is 32 waist and prefers things a little loose ( not snug) so I would say 38 chest ( but would prefer 40 ish (so he could wear a tshirt under) 5'9, like 165.

Hey Kim,
On people stress about fit and whether one brand or one size in a brand will fit us better than another. And they obsess over that Holy Grail of clothing terms: "True to Size." I'm not even sure what that term means but we love it anyway because we all want something that fits like it was made for us. Frankly "True to Size" is a very flexible concept intending to convey something rigid.
I would not worry too much about other reviews on whether this product fits very relaxed or very trim. Those reviews can be very helpful, but it sounds like you boyfriend has had some direct experience with the brand and a large proved to be a little big on him. I would try a medium this time around.

Too big

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

The stoic size chart put me in medium but I swam in it.
I'm 5'9" 145lbs and 37 chest. Item returned at my expense :(
I would like it if it fit.

I've got eleven or twelve of these Stoic Merino shirts now, and every year I add a few more. They're warm but breathable, and they fit my frame well (6'6", 160, so that's pretty tough). I never use the thumb holes, but the fact that they're there allows the sleeves to be plenty long .

My one complaint is that the fabric can tear pretty easily if it gets snagged, but I've only had that happen once.

I love these shirts

Dry fast, light weight, semi-slim fitting, long sleeve and shirt length for tall guys, deep zipper, non-itchy, thumbholes....
only con is it's very slightly baggier than i personally prefer on my skinny frame.

Great for winter running

I use this for trail running in the snow when it's around 30F and it's great: keeps me warm and first then lets me breath once I heat up. Usable as a base-layer or the only layer.

My New Skin

At first, it was a little itchy against the skin, but after the first wash I did not want to take it off. If you hang it to dry over night, it will be dry in the morning (under normal humidity conditions). The thumb holes fit really and the zipper although deep, allows you to control your temp a little better. If its and you are debating about several other options, grab it. I replaced this with a Patagonia Cap2 (same price) and could not be happier.

Weight vs SmartWool? Using SmartWool as a reference, what is the weight of this Stoic baselayer - micro, light. mid or heavy ?

Responded on

Light. I've worn it as an NTS with nothing on top in 40 degrees and sun, but it's also totally comfortable under heavier layers and jackets.

Truly Bliss!

I got this for my boyfriend and I have the W?s. Both of us are big fans. You can wear this truly for anything and also casually. Perfect layering piece and sometimes this is all you need with a synth tee. Never over heat but stay warm with the high breathability. The poly pro definitely helps with keeping you dry. The hand is nice and not too itchy as I find with some merino pieces. My boyfriend wears his almost everyday and goes without washing for weeks at a time? NO STINK! It washes real well, not too much piling.
Love?d it for the winter and can?t wait to use this summer.

Merino at a great price

I got this for my brother as a birthday present. He said he loves the fit and of course the thumbholes and its super comfortable. He has primarily used it as a base layer when snowboarding.

Stoic all day

Great fit. True to size. It's Merino wool, so that's always awesome. Great for casual wear or being active and working up a sweat. It whisks away fine, but also breaths and keeps you warm.

5 5

Perfect base layer

Fit is great - works perfect as a base layer or stand alone layer on a cool day. Thumb holes line up and no tugging on the shoulders. A steal on sale.

Excellent base

Fit is true to size and makes an excellent base layer. As always, the thumbholes make layering a breeze. Very lightweight but enough to wear on a cool day run.
