Sterling created the Ice Thong 7.7mm Twin Ropes to give you every possible advantage on long, steep pitches of ice. These dry-treated twin ropes won't gain water weight while they sit in the snow at the belay, so you don't finish a pitch with five pounds more than you started with. You'll appreciate the Ice Thong's low 40g/m weight on a long approach. Using two of these Sterling ropes adds redundancy to your system and allows you to make full-length rappels off the multi-pitch monster you just sent. *Sold individually.

Bottom Line: Find the biggest, thickest ice route you can sink your picks into, and rope up with the Sterling Ice Thong.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

This is only one rope. The "twin" implies this rope is not a stand alone, or other words you need two.

Ice Thong

Just by the name alone I love it. Skinny, skinny, skinny. When I bought my ice thongs years ago I was a like "oh crap these are thin". After years of use climbing ice and mountainereering they still look great. They are light and highly visible and never seem to absorb any water, all good things for alpine climbing. When I really want to save weight I'll carry only one and double it up on tough pitches.

May I also use them for "normal" sport climbing?

Yes, but you'll need two. Most sport climbers stick with a single 9+ mil. rope for ease of clipping draws, etc.
