The difference in front shifting technology is a point of distinction between Red and Force. The most important details are on the other end of the shifter cable -- at the left DoubleTap shift lever.
From a structural standpoint the one distinct change between Red and Force is the new, hardened titanium cage for the Red front derailleur. This makes the Red derailleur nearly 20g lighter than Force, and allows for quick and smooth shifts and adjustments. The braze-on version weighs 58g, while the clamp-on versions weigh 72g. Like Force, the Red front derailleur works equally well whether you're using a compact crankset (50/34) or a standard one (53/39).

If you buy a pre-2012 SRAM Red derailluer after March of 2012 you are getting ripped. The new 2012 SRAM Red derailluer with Yaw is completely awesome, with shifts so fast it will blow your mind; the old SRAM Red is terrible.
It has a cage that bends and over time your chain drops as fast as Andy Schelcks dreams. Not to mention it shifts no better that its Rival brother. Pass on this and buy the new SRAM Red Yaw.
I don't know why people gripe about the shifting with the Ti cage... I finish every climb sur la plaque and while the upshift to the big ring under power isn't quite as worry free as with Di2, I have yet to drop a chain or miss a shift with my red group. I will say though, that if you're using a light lube, the sound of the chain grinding on Ti gives me a nails-on-a-chalk-board-esque shudder up my spine. But as I was putting it on I was holding my red derailleur in one hand and my old ultegra one in the other, and wow was it lighter!
SRAM Red Front Derailleurs
I have had zero luck with them. I love the Red gruppo but the cage is not strong enough and bends when shifting from the small ring to the large ring and thus does not shift. Pain trying to go up a hill in the big ring. Called SRAM and got them to admit they are looking into this especially after I learned Cancellarra uses a SS SRAM derailleur. Switch to SRAM APEX SS and it shifts smooth. Red needs to figure this out. Other than that, I love SRAM Red and would only consider the Di2 gruppo if I wanted to dump the coin on it.
