The Spyder Surge Down Jacket keeps you warm while you wait for the start house to call your number. It also does the same thing while you watch the Town Downhill, grill brats in the parking lot, take the dog out for a midnight poop, or load up the truck in a pre-dawn powder panic. How does it do all those things? The secret is 580 fill power down, stuffed into a Spylon-coated polyester shell with handwarmer pockets and a hem drawcord. It’s light, warm, and compressible, and it will keep your torso toasty until you take it off.
Bottom Line: So…don’t take it off.

I love this jacket. It has a taller/slimmer fit for a down jacket, but still feels cozy/warm like a bigger/more poofy down jacket. Just the right amount of pockets. And the chin cuff is the perfect height.

Style- I believe this is one of the more stylish down jackets out there and that was an important factor for me
Warm- not the warmest down jacket available but very warm
Fit- it is sized big (see other review) and it is not cut for a slender person (there is some extra room in the belly)
Water Resistance- good (haven't fully experienced it's capability yet)
Durability- good, definitely much more durable than the down jackets that focus on weight and compressibility
Wind Resistance- good (haven't fully experienced it's capability yet)
Weight/compressibility- pretty good, not great. Probably made up for in durability though.

Sturdy material, Nice fill. If you are doing work in cold weather this is the jacket for you. It won't keep you warm on extremely cold days if you are idle. It would be a perfect mid layer. Fully adjustable and packable, its heavier than most down jackets.

I'd go with this Spyder jacket. I just prefer down over any synthetic insulation.

I love this jacket. I have only had it a few weeks, but I wear it all the time. It keeps me warm and is very light weight.
The only issue I had was with the sizing. I am a 41" chest and originally ordered a large ( I should have taken a closer look at the sizing chart)- but it was way too big. I exchanged this for a medium and it is a perfect fit. However, as I live in Canada, this mistake cost me an extra $70 ($29 for the original shipping and $41 for the return shipping of the large jacket)in shipping charges.
It would be great if Backcountry could set up a system similar to LL Bean for Canadian customers (returns are sent to a Canadian Broker) to minimize these shipping costs.

The fill number indicates the density of the down and feathers inside the jacket or vest. The number dictates that an ounce of that density down will expand to fill 580 cubic inches. Therefore, the higher the number, the denser the down, the warmer you stay. The feathers are most likely goose, and there will be far more down than feathers in a jacket of this type.
