A down jacket that's ready for any weather.

Every skier dreams of a durable down jacket with fluffy warmth that can take a beating at the resort, which is what inspired Spyder to create the Men's Rocket Down Jacket. The 800-fill down insulation gives you the warmth you need on those soul-chilling days, and Spyder was kind enough to weld the baffles for long-lasting durability against the corduroy-cruising, ice-scraping, and snow-plowing adventures we call skiing. An Xt.L 20K membrane and fully taped seams keep you dry in wet weather, and waterproof zippers over all external openings give this jacket waterproof protection in ways that your hardshell might not even dream of. A DWR coating on the rugged Pertex Shield shell adds even more durability and protection against snow storms, and the nylon lining offers all the stretch you need to rip pow, shred trees, and hike for secret stashes.

The Rocket Down also features underarm vents to let out some steam when the shredding heats up and a snap-back powder skirt to keep snow out of your skivvies when things get deep. The adjustable, insulated hood is removable when there's nothing but sunny skies overhead, and a series of pockets keeps you organized and prepared when you're on the hill.

    Super Toasty, Good Looks

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I didn't buy this jacket to ski in, though I think it would do just fine. I have other jackets like the Spyder Pinnacle which do the trick, though in my experience in Colorado, proper layering is the most important thing for skiing. No, I bought this jacket because I wanted a really warm down jacket that didn't make me look like I was trying to destroy Manhattan in the Ghostbusters movie. I have lighter Mountain Hardwear and North Face down jackets, and a Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL that is bomber, but pretty puffy. This Rocket Down jacket is every bit as warm as my puffy Sub Zero jacket, but considerably more attractive. It has a more tapered, fitted look, with a stretchy water resistant shell and soft inside lining. It is pretty water resistant, but this is not Gore-Tex. I wore it in a 33 degree downpour, and it did pretty well but there was some saturation by the end of the day. The hood is stuffed with down and really warm, but it's huge and square, just odd looking, but it will do the job. As for size, Spyder jackets are an athletic cut. I'm 5'8", 150 pounds, and the medium fits me well, with a little extra room for layering, but I have the small in the Spyder Pinnacle jacket, so small would likely have worked as well. My guess is the medium is probably good up to 5'10" before you'd want to consider the large. Bottom line is that this is a great down jacket for really cold temps that also looks great.

    Could be better

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large

This jacket fits a little small... I am 6'4" and thin... sometimes I can fit into a Large. Not with this jacket... the Large is way too small around my shoulders and too short in the arms. I assume the XL would fit, but overall, I was not impressed so I returned it for a different jacket.

I was looking for a really really warm down jacket, and this one doesn't quite cut it. First of all, the hood doesn't cut it (see below). Also, the front of the collar is very short... barely comes up to your chin, so you will need a neck gator with this jacket. And the chest pocket is on the smaller side.

The material and construction seem good... the zippers are nice. I like the design. I'm not a big fan of the hood, which is removable, and there are gaps where it doesn't attach. The hood is not oversized. Although it fits over a helmet, it won't provide full protection. You'll need a neck gator.

Also, the pit zips are more like arm zips, and they're not very long at all. They start near your arm pit and go out towards your elbows, but they do not cross over your armpit down to your torso. Not impressed.
