A versatile softshell for active pursuits in the cold.

The Spyder Men's Patsch Hooded Softshell Jacket is an all-around winner for any active pursuit in colder weather. This softshell features a Spylon+ DWR coating that repels water so you can ski or snowboard in the springtime with this jacket, or you can use it as a midlayer for winter endeavors. Its stretch softshell fabric is flexible so you'll have the freedom of movement you need when you pull through those tricky cruxes while climbing on a brisk fall evening. It's also highly breathable so you won't need to take the jacket off to get some air after hiking up a peak for the season's final powder dump. The fleece backing adds a bit more warmth than thin softshells, and it feels great next to your skin so you can trail-run in the cool mornings of springtime comfortably.

  • Spylon+ DWR treatment
  • Stretch softshell fabric
  • Fleece backing
  • Fixed hood
  • Zippered chest and handwarmer pockets
  • Brushed microfiber chinguard

Would you consider this an inner or outer shell?

Hi there Corey,
It will depend on the activity! It is a great outtershell for mild weather, and especially aerobic activities. For harsher winter conditions, it will be better suited as a mid-layer under a heavier shell with better waterproofing/breathability/durability

Does it keep you warm in winter months? Like 10-20below? I want one to go snowmobiling and skiing in. Would this be a good jacket? As well as to use at a school where the wind blows out of the canyon?

This is a decent softshell and a good layering piece but it lacks a wind or water proof membrane so I wouldn't trust it by itself if the conditions get too harsh. Also the fleece backing is not a hi-loft so be sure to layer up if you are going very far below freezing temps.

This jacket will do well in light rain, but if you expect to be in the rain for any length of time greater than a continuous 15 minutes, you should look into a dedicated rain shell. The Patsch jacket is made out of a softshell material...meaning it's comfy, stretchy, and breathes very well, but it is not very good at keeping you dry when it rains heavily. If you want a jacket that will keep you dry in moderate or heavy rains, I would recommend you look into something like the Marmot Precip, available here:
