Stay connected even when you're off the grid.

Part of the appeal of big adventures to remote places is that you're so far off the grid on your own, but the thrill of getting away can be tempered juuuust a bit if your food gets eaten by a bear, someone gets hurt, or a month-long storm skunks your plans. When that happens, you'll be really psyched to have the Spot Global Phone MDN 255. No matter how far from civilization you are, the Global Phone's satellite-based service will be able to get in touch with the wider world, so you can schedule a pickup, organize a rescue, or even just check your voicemail. The backlit LCD display and lighted keypad are visible during the day as well as at night, and the volume, signal, and battery life indicators mean there won't be any surprises when you're making a call.

Spot made this iteration of the Global Phone the best ever, which means it has more features than previous models, including any-key answering, a 99-number contact list, call history, a keypad lock, and a "minute alert" that lets you know how long your calls are lasting. It can also receive and send text messages, so non-emergency contact is a breeze, and the optional wireless data kit can plug into your laptop to send emails, check out the internet, and transfer files when you're miles from the nearest wireless network.

    Always sail with one

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A SPOT satellite phone saved my life during an offshore rescue at sea a couple years ago. Safe to say I've been a fan ever since!

I saill up and down the East & Gulf coasts and keep a SPOT sat phone onboard my own sailboat, and I always bring it in my personal kit bag on deliveries and long passages on other boats. I'm often at sea far offshore where cell phones are not an option, and the SPOT sat phone helps me keep in touch with my shore contact and family.

In my experience all SPOT devices hold up well on the ocean. Even in storms with 20'-30' waves and high winds calls rarely drop, and when they do I'm always able to reconnect immediately. If you are on a sailboat with a thick bimini you made need to move to a place on deck with a clear view of the sky.

If you are using a SPOT satellite phone offshore I recommend you program in the necessary US Coast Guard and other emergency numbers while you can still Google them on your cell phone! A laminated copy of the radio alphabet is also helpful if less experienced crew end up needing to speak with the authorities over the phone. Check the SPOT phone world coverage map before you buy, but for adventuring in North America and the surrounding oceans it's good to go.

    Best Value SAT Phone

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you are expecting world wide coverage and no dropped calls, don't get a SAT phone. This one has the best call quality of the SAT phones I've used. I've been on hour long conversations without getting dropped and I've been dropped after just a few minutes. I've connected it to my computer using the optional data cable and am able to send and receive emails, but too slow for pictures.
    video or surfing the net.
Take a look at the coverage map on findmespot.com before purchasing. Some areas of the globe have coverage and some do not.
The rate plans are reasonable and if you purchase during a rebate period, SPOT will rebate your purchase price when you activate with a qualifying rate plan.
It is simple to use and comes with a US based number. If you need to be in touch when you don't have cell phone coverage, this is a high quality and reasonably priced option.
