    Setting new standards.

The Smith Vantage MIPS Helmet offers the ultimate in ski- and snowboard-worthy protection, style, and comfort, so you can stay safe on the slopes while looking and feeling good. Between the lightweight feel, superior safety technology, and customizable fit and ventilation, there's no excuse not to rock one.

The Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) allows a small rotation of the outer shell relative to the liner when your head hits at an angle in order to decrease rotational forces, reducing potential damage to your brain. Smith also engineered the Vantage MIPS with Aerocore construction, which combines lightweight EPS with revolutionary Koroyd material. This unique material absorbs more impact than traditional foams while simultaneously improving breathability and reducing weight and bulk.

AirVac 2 ventilation features twenty-one vents that can be fully opened on warm spring days, partially closed when temps drop, or completely shut in the middle of a blizzard. The Boa FS360 fit system allows you to quickly and easily dial in the perfect fit. Snapfit S12 ear pads can be removed in warmer weather, and they're also audio-compatible with a (sold separately) Skullcandy audio system.

    Runs WAY Small

Ouch! Painfully small compared to the other Smith M helmets.

I have owned 3 Medium Smith Helmets in the past decade or so... Including the non-MIPS version of this helmet, which has been converted to my paragliding helmet with gear mounted all over it. Great helmets! I have always been comfortably in the middle of the Medium size. Not so with the MIPS! I figured since my head measures 56cm (M says 55-59cm), I would be fine. It was WAY too tight. I got a headache in 15 minutes. I am in the process of exchanging it for a L... although I am not sure I want a L. Is it going to feel like a huge shell bowling ball on my head?! Maybe I will just get another normal Vantage. Sigh...

      Love the fit!

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I ordered this helmet for my boyfriend who has a huge head! He has been trying to find a helmet that was comfortable and can accommodate for his big noggin for a while.
The size chart was accurate and the XL size fits him great! My guy wanted to add some more info:
"The Vantage helmet is awesome. I just got the helmet and wore it around the house to see how it felt. The final conclusion is that this helmet is very comfortable with or without ear pads. It took me a minuet to figure out how to get the pads off, but once I did the procedure is easy.
I have the Smith IO/X goggles and they fit very well with the What helmet. They do not fog, and it doesn't effect the ventilation.
I do not skimp on my brain buckets, so i decided to go with the MIPS option. I hope this serves me well for years to come! "

      Great helmet

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've always been a fan of Smith helmets and this one even made me a bigger one. I have used it all season and have only good things to say. It is very lightweight and with the vents open extremely breathable. I have taken some good spills so and it is holding up just fine still. It is only the pricey side but protecting your head with the best helmet makes it worth it, plus this thing will last a longtime. Definitely would recommend to a friend.

      Great Helmet

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have one, by brother has one, and my wife has one as well. These are super light, comfortable, and breathable. The vents work very well, and the internal boa system allows for a customized fit. I'm confident this helmet will protect my head in a big fall. This helmet with the Anon M2 goggle is a perfect fit.

Looks good but watch the sizing

My head is 58.5 cm which, according to Smith, should be a medium. I ordered the medium Vantage MIPS and even with the BOA all the way open, it was tight. I could tell I would get a headache if I wore it for any length of time. I returned the medium and got the large. The large fits but only with the BOA all the way open. I don't think I could wear even a skull cap under it if I needed to. Luckily, I run very warm so I doubt I'll need more than just the helmet for warmth. I haven't tried it on the slopes yet and will probably have to wait until next winter. I'll put it to the test at Jackson Hole in December '16!

        Happy melon.

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I purchased this as a gift for my husband whose previous helmet was a POC in-mold helmet that he would wear while snowboarding / splitboarding and while it was an adequate piece of melon protection, we both agreed that the number of falls he's taken that have resulted in concussions were enough to justify a new melon protector, especially one with MIPS. He's had terrific experience with MIPS as his bike helmet (a POC as well) has it and consequently has performed exceptionally.

The performance of the Vantage MIPS is stellar. It's incredibly lightweight and the ventilation options / BOA fit system are easy to adjust with a mittened or gloved hand. He recently took this helmet with on a yurt trip where it knocked his socks off - the multiple ventilation options were a hit and he was able to fine tune temperature regulation while the liner itself dried quickly after a day's worth of adventures. Additionally, the liner itself is removable and washable should you have a sweaty melon like he does. Not to mention, the helmet syncs flawlessly with his older-generation SMITH goggles which are equipped with a larger, plastic frame. The subtle visor is on point and very convenient and the green aerocore honeycomb details are very laid back and less vibrant than we initially thought they were. The vents themselves are a matte-ish grey color and cover up the sprightly green easily.

Also while it appears as though some of the below reviewers had trouble with the sizing, my husband did not. I ordered a large for him, as his dome measured at about 61 centimeters and per the size guide, the large is to fit 59cm-63cm. The BOA adjuster is really quite amenable as he only needed to slightly tighten the helmet. This helmet is definitely worth five stars as it performs outstandingly: MIPS and consequently your brain is most definitely worth the extra dollar.

Sizing is much smaller than indicated

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I was very excited to get this helmet, but I was quite disappointed when it didn't fit. I normally wear an XL so that' what I ordered. The helmet was painfully tight all around and just not something I could possibly wear for a hour much less a full day. The XL is listed at 63-67cm but when I measured the inside it was just over 60 CM. That's 3-7 CM off which is 1-2 inches which is pretty significant. I am unfortunately returning this. I cannot comment on anything other than the sizing since I was not able to test it, but for something this expensive you would expect that they get the sizing right hence the 1 star. From the other reviews here it seems this is not an isolated incident.

MIPS is the way to go

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great helmet improved with the awesome MIPS system. My last helmet was an old Smith helmet that was sized as a 59-60 cm, and I fit a medium well, I ordered the large and it was too big.

The vents in this helmet are great in deep snow, and once you get used to the position of the knobs to close / open them, you can easily open or close them depending on the weather or if you found some deep pow.

        Order a size up

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I usually can fit into a small helmet, but because of the MIPS in this helmet I had to fit into a medium.

Once you get past the sizing, this is everything you could ever ask for in a helmet. Good ventilation, snug fit, keeps you warm when you need it, and you feel protected.

        Strange sizing indeed

Great helmet, super light. I hope I never have to test the fact that Koroyd absorbs 30% more energy than EPS.

Like Matthew M said, the sizing is off. I'm a Large, all my helmets have been Large. The Vantage MIPS in Large barely fits. I ordered a Smith bike MIPS helmet in Large and that one fit perfectly.
Do yourself a favor and order the next size up.
I've already ordered it in XL.

My wife wears M, but the Vantage Smith M was too small. Order an L for her.

          Strange Sizing

          • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Just got my medium Smith Vantage MIPS in matte gunmetal. I'll be exchanging it for a large when they come back in stock.

I'm coming from a medium Giro G10 MX which I've had since 2009. I didn't measure the circumference of my head which may have been my downfall.

I did a quick comparison between the size chart for the G10 MX and The Vantage MIPS. The medium G10 MX in medium says it fits head from 55.5 to 59 cm and the Vantage MIPS says 55 to 59 cm for size medium. I ordered the medium Vantage MIPS because according to the size charts they should be almost identical.

Well, I tried it on and it definitely doesn't fit even with the BOA fit adjustment set to the fully open position. I can barely get it on and when I do it kind of wants to spring back up and does so.

Hoping it isn't a mismarked small because then the large will be huge and that will have to be returned as well for another medium. Also was thinking maybe the MIPS takes up some room, but I don't think it would be too significant.

Will re-review once I get the large.

Can't really review the rest of the helmet yet because I haven't had a chance to use it yet. Feels light and seems well made though.

I think the MIPS system does take up volume. I tried on the MIPS version a few weeks ago. With the fit system all the way open the M didn't quite fit my head and the ear flaps didn't quite cover my earlobes. The L was way too big and didn't feel right with the fit system adjusted all the way down. I tried on the non-MIPS tonight and the M fit great and sat lower. I'd be all over it if I wasn't sold on MIPS.
          Better luck to you.

I second that the sizing might be a bit small. I measured my head at around 24-24.5 inches, and L is supposed to be 23-25 inches. I just got this Vantage MIPS in a large and it's a snug fit, I have to leave the BOA basically all the way open.

I think luckily it fits just well enough that I don't need to return it, though I'd prefer to be more in the middle of the size so I'd have a little room to loosen just in case it starts to feel tight while riding.

So anyway, the sizing chart seems accurate but if you're exactly between 2 sizes go with the bigger one.

Thanks for the comments Nicholas and dcosson. Glad to know it wasn't just me thinking it ran a bit small or that I had gotten a mismarked small.

I haven't returned the medium yet so I haven't gotten the large MIPS yet to try on. A little discouraged that you said the medium was too small and the large was too big Nicholas. Might have to go for the medium non-MIPS or another Giro.

I'm going to package up the medium and send it back on Monday from work so I should have a large by Thursday or Friday. Will update on the fit when I get it.

Just to update you guys. I tried on a medium and large non-MIPS Vantage at a local ski shop this past weekend when I was bringing in my skis to get mounted. The medium non-MIPS had a little more room than the medium MIPS, but not much more. Certainly not enough to fit significantly better for me. The large felt much better. Had to dial in the BOA adjuster a bit, but it didn't feel too big like it did for Nicholas. Plenty of room for when I'm in need of a haircut or for a helmet liner on those really cold days. I'm guessing the large MIPS will be a little smaller, but not by much and I had plenty of room in either direction if I need more room or need to snug it up. I should be getting my helmet soon and will make an update based on how the large MIPS fits.

I think I can confirm your suspicion. I tried on a pair of Vantages (non-MIPS) at my local store of the same model year. I thought it fitted great. I decided to order from BC because the local shop colors choices sucked.

Got the MIPS and well, it doesn't fit well. I have a round head and the MIPS helmet produced pressure at the side of my head. This once again, was after the non-MIPS helmet fitted great. I hadn't really thought that MIPS might be the reason why it didn't fit me. But since you're having similar experience, I suppose it makes sense.

And since I'm on the lower end of a large, I can't really step up to a larger size. A shame since I actually really liked the helmet.

I am interested in this this helmet but I'm concerned about the fit based on the reviews here. I'm a medium (55-59cm) in a older vintage smith helmet without MIPS technology. My head measures around 57-58cm. Would you recommend a medium or large for this helmet? Thank you!

          Hi Stephen,

I have this helmet in a Large and my head is 7 3/8 (58-59cm) and it fits me great, especially when I'm wearing a balaclava. The amount of adjustability on this helmet is pretty good so if I were you I would go with the medium in this case.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly.

          Thanks,

How can I identify MIPS or not?
Does that have any sign or mark on the helmet or package?

I have this helmet...great fit and style. Just wondering where I can get that Backcountry face mask in the photos? Checked the backcountry site but could not find??

Does the MIPS only allow one crash all the tubes break or does it stay completely function after a crash.

Depends how bad the crash. I hit a tree with my Smith bike helmet with Koroyd - all the tubes collapsed at the point of impact, but stayed intact around the rest of the helmet. The foam shell did not crack either - just collapsed a bit. Will be replacing it soon, but for now I feel it still offers a good deal of protection

          to whom it may concern,

will you be offering different colors of this helmet at some point and if so any ideas as to when? thanks
