Smith collaborated with Troy Lee Designs to create the progressive Smith Try Lee Helmet, which takes inspiration from motocross, but is designed for big-mountain freeride charging. The lightweight, full-coverage construction features a blend of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and aramid for total protection that won’t weigh you down. The flow-through vent system includes four intake and exhaust vents, and Smith gave the Troy Lee an interchangeable, washable padded liner. The included fit kit provides a custom touch, and the storage bag protects the helmet on your way to the mountain. The black and white options feature a composite shell.
Bottom Line: Full coverage for full-commitment lines.
Perfect helmet for charging. The one thing I do is cut out the chin gasket. This is more for mtbing, keeping the dirt out kinda thing. It just adds to fogging, when standing still to prevent fogging I try and breath though my nose, as well as exhaling. Otherwise take off your goggles if your going to be standing around for a while. Nice and light, the carbon is what I use and notice the difference at first between the plastic shell version weight wise on the head. Good venting through out the head while moving. Helmet pretty much fits all goggles, nice to have a goggle that has silicon on the strap to help keep it in place on helmet. Visor is replaceable and easily removable. If you have deep pockets try getting a custom paint job by Troy Lee Designs(company producing the helmet) they can do anything and its going to look sick. The main reason I use this hemet is that it has shell sizes, so the look of he size fits with the size of your body. Many other companies use one shell size for many head sizes. Thus they add lots of foam to make a smaller head fit the rather large shell, so you look like a bobble head. Some of the internal padding is removable so you can wash it.
the chin gasket's the little black/foam flap that spans the lower front of the face guard correct? I just got my helmet in the mail and that piece seems to have gotten bent out of shape. I'm gonna cut it out too if it isn't neccessary

I used this helmet for freeskiing competitions last year. It is really amazing how well Troy Lee Designs has figured out that level of protection with such good balance and lightweight design. For a top of the line downhill MTB-style helmet, this is your only choice. My only complaint was fogging. If you're at a standstill and you're gasping for air cause you just outran your sluff through a chute and off a mandatory air, you might fog up the outside of your goggle lens. But since the fogging is exterior, all you have to do is start moving again and it clears right up.
If Im getting real gnarly I wear this helmet durring winter. wich like cody and drew metioned fogging of goggles is a potental problem because the face shield reflects your breath back to your face. so... with all full face some modifications to you routine are critical... remove he helmet when possible,(hiking or standing around) breathing through your mouth pushing the air down like your blowing bubbles through a straw.. will help the fog issh.
I mostly wear this helmet biking in the summer. it is really light and comfortable fits with all the smith goggles great, and works well with shades too.
Most people who use this helmet, are not using it for ski racing. Unless your doing skier cross or big mountain comps, you might be one of the only people to use a full face like this for traditional ski racing. Smith makes great helmets, but if you're looking for a actual ski racing helmet, you might need to look for Briko or Carrera. As these are a bit more niche, you might have to look at more of a racing speciality shop (Reliable Racing)
If you are going big on skis or a bike, I would highly recommend this helmet. You will look much better with all of your teeth in your mouth instead or picking them up off the ground.
Smith said they only made one production run of this for the 2009/2010 season and they won't be making more. The fogging mentioned is an artifact of the protection. Smith has made several openings with screens to minimize the effect. This helmet looks 10 times better in person than in the picture. Sizing - My 'noggin measures 58cm. Sizing says I should be in a M/L, but no way. I had to exchange for a XL/XXL, and needed none of the added padding, so the sizing definitely runs small. If you're 57cm or larger I recommend the XL/XXL and use the supplied padding if necessary. You'll be a lot happier.
I'm a pretty good 44 year old skier who skis everything. Last Sunday my seven year old son beat me down 7th Heaven at Stevens Pass WA (a double diamond run). If anyone is wondering, we started him in lessons one or two months after his 3rd birthday. Truthfully, he is under control and is working the hill judiciously but pretty damn aggressively too. I've witnessed a few spectacular wipeouts. I will measure his head and compare it to the chart -will this work for little kids? He's got a good helmet but it's not full faced and I want to do all I can to equip him safely.
My son is 8 and has 51 to 52 cm head size. He found Large size of this helmet is better for him. My other son, who is 11 and has 55 cm, found Large size is too small for him. He ended up using D2 XXL here. I tried both sizes, and can only accept XXL size. My head is about 56 - 57 cm. Note that those using glasses, the Knowledge Turbo Fan will be partially (mostly) blocked on top fan outlet. XXL size is better for the fan outlet. Must use Black color because the lining is different in other color even if they are all Knowledge Turbo Fan.
Both of my sons wear glasses. They both ended up using XXL with padding included. But in that case, BLACK Knowledge Turbo Fan can now squeeze for the XXL size helmet (not for Large size D2 helmet).
After skiing some of the runs at Crested Butte, CO I decided that this would be a good idea for the double diamonds and for when the freeskiing competitions start up. Helmet works great, keeps my head warm and I feel bomb proof wearing it. It does fog you goggles a little, but like said in prior review, it goes away as soon as you move. I wear the Smith Phenom which almost fits, but the Smith Prodigy fits much better. Overall great protection and awesome looks!
Does anyone know the obvious disadvantages of this helmet? like the whole neck breaking thing or is that just a rumor? i have about 5 scares on my face from skiing and so i thought it might be a good idea to go with this helmet. i compete in the junior extreme freeskiing championships.
The fogging problem can be solved. My sons, first used Smith Knowledge Fan Goggles with this helmet. Fogging problems went away until last year. We then ski in Japan and the fogging returned. They now use Swan Fan Goggles with their Smith Troy Lee Helmets (XXL) even with their glasses on. They have no more fogging problem at all! (This was tested after two trips in both Dec. 2010, and Feb. 2011 skiing in Japan, under extreme high wind and about -15C mingled with heavy snowing). Location - Rusutsu and Neisko. p.s. They both are double diamonds at now 10 & 12. p.p.s. You can see my son's photo above. The one with glasses and with the helmet I posted before (under Ant2787945 above).
This is a good helmet! Yes it fogs when you stop, but any full face does that, so if you need the protection don't factor that in. The only down-side so far is that when you do your face-plant you will break the visor. Smith, nor Backcountry (nor anybody) stock the visor as a separate item that can be purchased. I was able to get mine replaced by sending only the visor to Smith Warranty repair and they had me back a new one in two days. It would be really nice is Smith had this item as an accessory that can be purchased. My replacement visor came in a Troy Lee package with a part number. I might call them and see if I can buy one to have on-hand as a spare.
I wear a Medium in Smith Hustle so i would think that the M/L in the TLD lid would fit, as it did, but just a little snug. I guess with this helmet you want it pretty tight. As Drew mentioned, I found out that fogging was the main dislike of this helmet. Once I got going again, it did start to clear up a little, but since it was pretty cold, the fog froze and I had to deal.
All in all, the lid works great and offers awesome protection. I wore the Oakley Crowbars with this helmet, and it was a great fit. No gaps whatsoever. If I didn't have to wait in tram/lift lines and fog up, this would be my everyday helmet.
I would use this helmet for snowmobiling and snowboarding. Anyone ever use this helmet at 60 mph and if so how does it handle the wind speed? Some helmets seem to catch wind more and want to pull your head off at high speeds.
In reviews, said it gets fog a little but would go away when start moving. Was the fan in the Smith Prodigy "on" at that time? If stand still, and put fan on "HIGH", would it still fog?
I have used prodigy turbo fans and they do a good job preventing fog. You still can't hike in it or anything but when just skiing around the turbo fans are a big help. They don't fit as well as the regular prodigies but it works and is worth is for the reduced fogging.
