Poor quality and service from Smith

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

As a lifelong Smith product user, I've always been very happy with their products and service on warranties until recently. Growing up in retail, my family's shop carried Smith products and since then I have worked in several shops with their products. I could always say their products are very durable and their customer service is exceptional until now.

About 7 months ago I purchased the Spree sunglasses. I was very happy with them at first. The fit was great and optics were as expected from Smith. This lasted about a month. The frame started stretching quickly and the lenses scratched with minimal contact. I continued wearing them until a very slight pressure broke them the other day (taking a picture with my dog, who was hardly leaning into me). I sent them back to Smith, as I've always known them to be very understanding with warrantied items and I have seen them replace sunglasses that are years old and scratched to death in the past. There was actually an incident where I didn't send back a pair that I had a very long time that probably broke from my own mistakes because I felt bad about how lenient their warranty was. Instead of replacing them, the customer service agent was very defensive and accusatory. She flat out disagreed with how I used them and my past experiences. Eventually, she only offered a discount off MSRP on my next pair, which isn't even enough to justify not buying some on sale. She also gave me very vague answers to questions about why their warranty now seems so restrictive and what has happened to production over the past few years, as the past two pairs of goggles I have had haven't held up as well as they used to.

After my initial contact, the promised email with a discount wasn't even sent. I had to call back and go through the same process all over again with the same defensive customer service rep! I hate to say this, as I have always really enjoyed Smith products and have sold a ton of their products, but my experience with their customer service and the quality of these sunglasses has really turned me away from them.

Not how the picture looks

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

They are decent glasses - very light and good quality.

Biggest problem is that they don't match the picture. The frame is actually dark gray vs. black, which makes frame lighter than the glasses. They look odd and it takes some time to get used to of the looks. First reaction was to return them but since that was a hassle, just landed up keeping and using them.
