You can’t stand people that spend all day yakking when they should be riding, but you also can’t imagine shredding without metal crushing your cranium. Check out the Skullcandy Single-Shot Helmet Audio Kit for a one-purpose auditory answer. The 3.5mm jack is compatible with all audio devices –even that tape player you’ve been hanging onto. An in-line volume control lets you turn it down on the fly when you want to hear the park groupies go gaga.
Standard audio jack for MP3 players, CD players, cassette decks, and iPhones
I installed these in my Variant Brim over my last ski trip, and used them to play back songs from my iPhone. Good idea, imperfect execution tho:
Pro's - 1) Sounds pretty good, surprisingly good even. Balanced, with a lot more bottom end than I expected. 2) Quick disconnect is really nice when stopping for a beer / snack / snog. 3) Simple controls work well, even in gloved hands
Con's - 1) The added bulk in the Variant's ear pad / liner makes the helmet pinch my ears slightly. Not enough to require a change of helmet or audio system, but enough to make me "annoyed" 2) The button doesn't answer iPhone calls (although it does work as a speaker / mic once you answer the phone). This means that a ringing phone requires a dive into the layers to press "answer." Not a big problem, as when I am skiing, I don't like to answer the #$%$ phone... only J#$k@#$es do that ;-)
Overall, totally loved it. The ease of control meant I could rip with my tunes... and still convince my wife I was paying attention to her!
If your rockin an iphone these will do just about everything with ease. and the big button on the remote kicks ass when wearing gloves. They even work with voice control. stay away from the twin tip audio, where the volume control works through one cord and the skip song feature through the other. These are all integrated, sound great, and are easy to control when your thick enough to bump ABBA instead of listening to the babe next to you on the lift
hi there, i read your comments on the twin tip kit as well. i'm wondering whether now with the single shot kit, you can actually TALK on the phone? because i don't think the single shot has a microphone, does it? it just tells you that a call is coming in and you can hear the caller but they can't hear you! is that right?

These are good. Point 1. do not use your "shake to shuffle" setting on your iPhone when listening to tunes while skiing bumps...hilarious/pain in tha butt, 2) These are good, although not quite sure why the controls work sometimes and not others - I think it has to do with my phone tho, 3) Could use some more bass, especially for the booming tunes, but at the same time, this is kind of a safety feature since you're not completely isolated from the world around you, which is good at high speed. Still would like more bass...
I have a smith variant that is pre-2010. It seems that another part is required to install these speakers. The removable earpads that connect around the back of the helmet need to be compatible with the speaker system. The earpads on my helmet do not have pockets to hold the speakers.
I love skiing with music. For some reason I can't ski with ear buds in my ears. It seems to affect my balance. Having these however is great because i have music rockin' and i can still hear my skis on the snow and other things around me as well. I had the older version which were just the pads with speakers permanently in them. I think these ones are a big improvement. The integration is smoother, my old plugs would sometimes come out. Additionally the button to stop the music/hang up the phone is much less likely to accidentally get pushed than was the previous model. I'm using these with the Smith Maze helmet.
the sound in these is rad and they have more functions then the ones for giro helmets which makes it easy to change songs instead of having to take off your gloves and pull out you're ipod on the lift
Do you have a Giro helmet? I have one with slits in the ear pads for headphones and these look like they would fit in those slits so i was just wondering.

works just like the iphone ear buds that come with the phone. these allow you to pause and skip songs and turn the volume up and down. controls are suitable with gloves on. The only down side is the lack of bass.
Although these came without installation instructions, install was easy. These work really well with the Smith Vantage helmet and are super easy to operate. Awesome combo. I can change volume with gloves on and easily change songs in a second. I wrapped the cord so that the controller sits nicely on the strap. My iPod is new all over again with these in my helmet. They are so worth it.
I looked but there is no zippered pockets in my ear pads. I though it was suposed to come with the audio kit, just like the pictute shown at Smiths website. http://www.smithoptics.com/products/#/Accessories/Accessories+Helmet/Skullcandy+Single-Shot/view/
I got these to listen to and control my Android phone (I use it for music and as a phone) with my smith variant helmet, the sound was great and I didn't have any of the problems others reported with having the controls not work (But I'm not a great skier and don't do much where the controls would get soaking wet), I did have to return my first pair because the spring on the clip of the audio control/mic broke but BC took care of it right away.
I had the same broken spring problem with the clip. Next to go was the push button that wouldn't stay "clicked" so I had to tape it down in order to use it.
Overall, I like this item but would love to find a plain 3 stripe/2 stripe male/male 3.5 mm cable that I could use instead. If anyone knows where I could find such a cord, feel free to send me a link!
very suprised how good they sound! had my doubts but overall these are a good buy. Very handy control on the cord allows you to change the volume, skip song, and pause.
These headphones are a great idea it is just too bad that the quality of the controller is shoddy. The functions simply do not work. This is my third pair and they all have controller issues. By issues I mean they don't work!
I tried the twin tip and single-shot audio options and neither one functioned properly. The twin tip had control issues and the sound in the single-shot regularly went in and out, especially when skiing the bumps and sketchy terrain that required quick changes in direction. I'm not sure if it was a connection issue, wiring, or the mute button, but it was beyond frustrating for two days. In the end, ear buds just seem to be the best option.
great sound quality, but I'm returning this item as the control button is supposed to be compatible with my ipod shuffle (3rd generation) but alas it doesn't so I don't want to pay so much for something that doesn't work like it's supposed to!
They do the job. Sound quality is okay, and they were really easy to install in my Smith helmet. I don't really like the tiny volume control because it's difficult to operate with gloves on, yet I find myself accidentally hitting it with my jacket all the time. However they've lasted through an entire season with no other issues...so, three stars for Skullcandy!
These work well enough from a sound perspective but the controls work whenever they feel like. I think it is an issue where the control clickers is not sealed against the elements in any way so once any type of moisture works in there (sweat or snow) it shorts out the control and it no longer works. The volume knob continues to function but nothing else. If you dry the set out at home it regains all function. Usually I have a bunch of pre-made mixes so its not a huge issue but beware that it does not always function properly.
These work real well and set up is a breeze. A lot more comfortable then having an in-ear set up, and not the bulk that some helmet speakers amount to. 5 stars for for my feeling that the in line volume adjuster could be made to be less obtrusive/smaller.
If your rockin an iphone these will do just about everything with ease. and the big button on the remote kicks ass when wearing gloves. They even work more...
