Awesome, if it fits your face.

Didn't ge to try this goggle on in my local shop. Thought it would fit great because the EG2 fit my face perfectly. Turns out the IOX is too big for my face, there's a huge gap at the bridge of my nose.
The lenses are amazing. The red / blue sensor mirror is THE best lense I've used. It can be pretty much used in all condition unless it's really really sunny. Would love to keep these but I might have to switch to the IO for a better fit.
Love them!

Smith's website gives a pretty good detail on the lenses.

I have had constant issues with my goggles fogging up in the past. I finally decided to spend the extra $$ hoping that it would resolve that problem and look good at the same time. I bought the Blackouts, and these have yet to fog up on me. Goggles look sick and are easy to swap out.
wear them everyday

I use these everyday whether I am work or skiing the resort on my own time. I've had more awesome days than not with them, but there have also been a few occasions where i've had some fogging issue. A few defogging wipes have usually done the trick for me, I know your not supposed to use them on there, but it totally helped me with the fog. Aside from the occasionally fog, these are the most comfortable goggles I have ever owned, hands down.
No problems

These have worked well for me. I've been happy with the quality of the lenses and visibility in various light conditions.
Horrible experience with the IOX

They performed horribly during a waste deep POW day at Snowbasin. The kind of day that your struggling to breath because of all the face shots of snow ...or a day where you can't feel the bottom...days most of us live for.
After 2 runs they started fogging up like crazy, the condensation then started to provoke some frost inside...had to clean them as I was going back up the gondola...5 mins into the run they were all fogged up again...had to stop constantly to clean them during each run...then just gave up and had to ski without them most of the time to see where I was going... oh ya, skiing in those conditions without goggles...really fun !...man was I pissed !
Otherwise in regular conditions they worked fine...I've been skiing for over 30 years and I know how to be careful with my goggles for optimum performance...but the Smith IOX just failed miserably in conditions that we all dream about :-(

the peripheral vision is not that great also on the IOX, I had an older pair of Smiths that I skied with for years that had better vision...the Quicksilver Travis Rice Hubble goggle looks interesting, but I would need to see how it fits over a helmet. ..I think the problem with the IOX may be the fact that the lens is simply pressured on the frame. A lot of snow got lodged all around the small space between the edge of the lens and the frame...that may have hindered its performance giving me the problems that I described.

I had the exact same issues with riding deep pow in Mammoth. The space between the lens and the frame allowed snow and condensation to accumulate inside the goggles. It's a major flaw! I'm going back to the regular I/O google, which has treated me right for several years.

Great FOV, easy change lenses, almost completely fog free even in negitive temps while climbing hard.
Great Design, but concerns on quality...

These goggles are fantastic from a design perspective. Big, excellent field of vision, and comfortable. Love the blackout lenses. HOWEVER, after using one of the lenses (the red ones that came with the blackouts), my inner lens delaminated after 3 days at Snowbasin. VERY disappointed with this. I took them back to the Smith Factory in Layton, where they were happy to warranty them, but it will take about 3 weeks to get them back (that's about 1/5th of my ski season without my low light lenses). I asked both Backcountry and Smith about this, and they've stated that it's been a 'known' issue with these lenses. The good news is that they're amazing in concept and they're backed by a great warranty. The bad news is (if they delaminate occasionally) you may be stuck without your $180.00 goggles for part of the season. I'm hoping it my next lens is a bit better from a quality perspective.

Had the I/O for a season and they were good, but did fog occasionally. The new I/Ox I've had since day one of this season and not one hint of fogging yet. Also a bit bigger so better vision. Win Win.... buy again@!

I find that no matter what the more I sweat via my face the more likely is to fog up my lenses. The igniter lens is great in all light. Flat light is always tricky in my opinion but the igniter performs admirable. If you can buy on sale. Only drawback is it's pricey!
Awesome!

Exactly what I needed especially with interchangeable lenses! 100% sold on the lifetime guarantee on it's own :)
Great goggles

So far I love these goggles. Comfortable, wide view, helmet compatible, looks sick, easy swap out. Only draw back is that if you scratch the lens it's really noticeable so i'd make sure to protect the lenses as best you can. Overall really sick goggles.
Comfortable, but lens scratch easy

The IOX are a very nice set of goggles, but it isn't without flaws.
Pro's
+ Very comfortable
+ Should be able to fit over glasses (has cutouts)
+ Much wider field of view than the IO's version
+ The ability to switch out lens to different lighting conditions
+ Decent fog prevention, but have had one day of skiing that was fighting fogging. Need to use more to verify how big of a problem it could be.
+ Excellent fit with Smith Variant Helmet
+ Better for ppl with big noses, than IO version. I had trouble breathing with the IO version. IOX is much much better!
Con's
- Lens scratch EASILY! I would NOT recommend carrying the spare lens with you when skiing! I now have a 1 inch x 0.25" scratch on the lens i was carrying it in my jacket.
Carver Shaw

Do you keep your spare lens in the carrying sleeve the goggles come with? I do this and haven't experienced any scratching.

These things are sick! I have a Giro G10 helmet, and they work awesome together, with a tiny seam!(The guy here that claims something about the iOX not fitting with his G10 seems to be wrong) The lens color is dope and the sensor mirror will be nice for night skiing. I wear glasses, and these fit perfectly with them. DESPITE WHAT THIS WEBSITE SAYS, these actually are OTG goggles. I had a little trouble first figuring out how to change the lenses, but after that it's pretty fast, around 1-2 minutes.
Bottom line: Awesome goggle, hard to fog at all, fits over glasses, and works with my G10 well. I would recommend this to anyone.

Big and bad. Not for small faces. I have found that my helmet can push them down a bit but it isn't really bothersome (smith gage). Same amazing smith optics we've come to know and love, lenses are outstanding and they'll all come with a lens for dark and bright conditions so you're set to go.
Smith IOX - helmet compatibility issues

The IOX are oversized and because of their size will have compatibility issues with many helmets. My Giro G10, (a very popular helmet) will not work with the IOX. There are two issues with the IOX and helmets, the width of the IOX and the height (top to bottom) of the goggle are simply too large to work with most helmets. Because of its height when the top of the goggle is against the top of the helmet the goggle will be too far down on the nose and compress the nostrils. The IOX is too wide for the Giro G10, the outriggers ride in an odd position on the edge of the helmet causing small gaps that let air flow in. I do not believe there are many helmets that will be compatible with the IOX and that they will fit and work best without a helmet.

It works great with my G10, do you have a "small" helmet?
jkup73465
Member since
Duncan - I have a medium G10. The problem may be that I have a relatively big and wide nose. I should note that the IO works great for me. It really comes down to what works for each person.

I have a Giro G10 size large (09\10) and they fit fine. No problems.
