Good in theory, bad in practice

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

The motor stops after 6 to 10 minutes. The battery case and specially the rubber switch is a bad design! Tiny on/off button cannot be pushed with gloves. The switch and case are made of many tiny parts, and those parts do not stay assembled when you change the battery or even when trying to push the on off button. The rubber battery cover does not stay in place. The power cable disconnects when removing the goggles. This new model is poorly designed, the older Smith goggles that used only one battery were a better design with a superior on off switch an a real hard battery case. Unfortunately more than 30 days have passed since my purchase and I ?used? these goggles on a recent ski trip,so I cannot return these for a refund.

Almost a great goggle

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have now been out with these a few times. I got the photochormic lens, which works great.

The fan is silent and works very well...when it works. It has two issues, one seems to be more easily solved. There have been many reports of the goggle fan failing to work in below-freezing weather. Many reviewers have suggested that if you use Li-Ion batteries you should not have this problem.

The bigger problem seems to be a design flaw, which I did experience and many have reported. At times the fan stops working - it seems to have something to do with the wire that connects the fan unit to the goggle, and the position of this wire when the goggles are put on the helmet or moved around. I have seen mine stop and start as I move the headband around.

Based on reviews on Smith's website it sounds like this may be a known issue that Smith is addressing. In my experience so far it has been manageable, but it is frustrating and really shouldnt be happening with such an expensive pair of goggles.

Awesome Goggles!

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I always had problems with fogging. Stopping, taking off googles, everyone getting mad waiting for me. A total pain. I bought these last year and I love them. I used them 8 Days straight at Breck, had 2 major storms while I was there,3feet+3feet+. No fogging Another 7 days at Mammoth, No fogging, Best investment in a long time. You don't even know there running. Battery time isn't an issue neither. If you have the extra $$ Go for it, you won't regret it...
