Description

Protect your gray matter without getting laughed at.

It’s tough to design a helmet that doesn’t make the guy wearing it look like a bubble-headed dork. Smith gave the Variant Brim Helmet a low profile and a brim to avoid that problem.
  • 22 Vents can be opened or closed at the flip of a switch so you can regulate your temperature on the fly
  • AirEvac 2 ventilation allows maximum goggle and helmet airflow to decrease fogging
  • Snapfit ear pads can be removed on warm spring days so you have protection without extra insulation
  • Hybrid construction technology allows lower-profile design and light weight
  • Silver coated fabric in the lining maximizes heat transfer to keep you comfortable and permanently reduces odors so your helmet doesn’t stink
  • Adjustable fit accommodates different head shapes and sizes

hi,how do i know what size to get,is there an certain way to measure my mellon, because i am ordering from Australia & i want to make sure i get the right size thanks Darren

Responded on

Measure your head circumference then click on the "size" link below the drop-down menu to see which size you should order. Be sure to leave room for a hat if you need too.

Responded on

More specifically, If you have measuring tape (like the pliable ones used for sewing) that would be helpful. If not, run some string (or whatever works) around your head just above your eyebrows and ears, and measure the string. After that, the sizing chart is pretty spot on. As was mentioned, make sure you factor in a hat, if you plan on wearing one underneath. I don't personally. Also, The helmet can be adjusted a little bit fairly easily with a tightening strap thing on the inside.

Hope that helps!

Responded on

The best way to measure is by having a sewing kit. the pliable measuring tapes they use easily wrap around your head. You need to wrap it around your head at about mid forehead level, continuing to right above the ears. Similar to where the helmet would sit, properly on your head, when you're wearing it. You could also just go to any ski shop near you, and they'll measure it for you if you pretend like you're planning on buying a helmet.

Do oakly goggles fit with this helmet? I wear the oakly's with little indents that allow prescription glasses

Responded on

They should work just fine. I haven't tried the pairing but would expect the relatively standard designs of the goggles and helmet to mesh well.

Responded on

Yes, all goggles will work and fit this helmet. Obviously smith goggles are designed to fit seamlessly and integrate with the helmet, but plenty of people I know use Oakley, Spy, Dragon, Scott and many other brands of goggles with this helmet.

warm when I want it

Love this hat! great venting, close the vents and it warms up, silver threading cuts bad smells down, and last time I hit a tree the thing work like a champ! pretty light and comfortable too!

This is It

This is the helmet you want. It has everything you need. Its adjustable to get the right fit for your noggin. Tons of vents so you don't sweat down into the eyes. Ear pads that can be fitted with speakers or just zip in your headphones and crank it. Goggle strap so you don't lose the gogs in a tomahawk. And it looks good too so do yourself the favor and just get it. You'll be glad you did.

Good value!

Very happy with my helmet. I bought a LARGE, I wouldn't consider my head huge, but this size fits me perfectly. The dial to adjust the skis makes it feel like a bike helmet. Ear guards are good, definitely keep me warm. Very good value. In Australia this helmet would be well over $200!

Order process

The order process for someone like me, purchasing in Australia is just the smoothest ride of your life. I love you guys so much, not only are you saving me heaps of dough but I couldn't purchase and receive them earlier even if I lived in the states.

Perfect

I picked this helmet up after suffering a concussion a week prior and cracking my previous helmet from the forehead all the way up the center to the top of the helmet. I knew that I needed a helmet that would protect me. After my injury I vowed to always wear a helmet.

I found this helmet on sale at REI. Picked it up, put it on, and fell in love with it. The construction of this helmet is incredible. The ventilation system is perfect. And it looks and feels great on your head. I used it towards the end of the season, about 4-5 times. And it was great. I strongly recommend this helmet.

Is this better than the Giro G10, if so why I cannot decide which to get!

Responded on

If you have smith googles, go for the smith - they'll fit better together.

Responded on

They fit differently. The giro helmet works better on a more oblong shaped head. The main difference between these two other than the fit is the visor. The variant is just a small brim, whereas the g10 is a full a full on visor. Although it is a pain to lift your goggles up and keep them with the variant brim it is possible. On the g10 it is impossible due to the huge visor. The visor also gets in the way when packing the helmet in your pack on tours and backcountry excursions.

Great helmet for all conditions, zeal

I'm a boarder and originally was looking for a bern or red, but after visiting a store and trying them on, this smith just fit the best. The mesh lining & xstatic just felt sweet. It looks great, the vents are easy to adjust for conditions (i was easily able to close them on the ski lift w/my gloves on) They fit seamlessly with my Zeal Dominator goggle, and I also like that the Medium is so adjustable (54-59 cm i think), so I can wear a beanie underneath w/out issue if wanted. You can easily drop in audio adapters as well, if you're into that.

Smith Variant Brim

The helmet is a slight improvement on the older model, the brim is more durable and the chin strap seems to be a little better as well... everything else is pretty much the same, but in this case its a matter of "if it aint broke... don't fix it", cause this is an extremely well built helmet...

I did notice the fit of the Medium is slightly tighter that it was before and there are a few more pressure points than before but I am sure it will pack out eventually...

Overall, its a great helmet, but maybe not the best choice for kiting since I have to look up at the kite and the brim occasionally gets in the way of my view... Next time... I'll go brimless...

Great Helmet

The fit is great, it works well with my phenoms, the audio kit is easy to install and use, and it protected me well when I took a header into a tree. The vents are pretty easy to use, even with gloves on, and I've rarely been uncomfortable cold or warm as a result.

Good product.
