Description

Yaks smell, your socks shouldn't.

SmartWool uses their long lasting blend of wool and nylon to make their Trekking Heavy Crew Sock as adventurous as you are. The sights and sounds of an exotic land should not be overshadowed by the smell of your socks. Arch support and padding aid in keeping foot muscles relaxed and protected during long trips. Wool has the ability to keep your feet warm and dry while the outside temperature goes from chilly to steamy. Foot funk and odors are naturally repelled for day after day on the trail. Wash these wooly socks in a stream and they'll be dry before you know it.

Average socks.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've read all the stellar reviews of these socks and, indeed, it is part of the reason I ordered them. I live way up in the Rockies and we spend lots of time in the snow in winter and ranching (workboots) in the summer. I've always relied on heavyweight, dense weave wool ragg socks over the years. But such dense weave socks don't seem to be available anymore (I've been looking without success for some time). So I ordered several pair of these. I find them to be merely *OK*. That's it, really. They are reasonably comfortable, but they do not stay up all that well. They could be better served by being a slight bit taller with better elastic at the top of the sock. They are reasonably warm, but I wouldn't call them better than those old wool ragg socks that are unfortunately wearing out. I find that threads also pull on these fairly easily. Not sure what all the fanfare is about. These will do, but I'd be happy to find something better.

I made an attempt to buy these socks from smartwool but they never got to us because their website is slow and it turned out they were sold out. Never got the news until weeks later. So thankfully, Backcountry had plenty and I received my socks right away! These socks live up to all the great reviews and so, I am buying more right now.

Cozy and WARM

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These are my favorite winter socks for work and play in the snow. I love wearing them around the house in the winter too! After 15 or so wears/washes they are doing better than my other wool socks as far as holding up.

For the right occasion, it rocks

Smart wool makes so many socks with so many names who can begin to keep track of 'em. IMO, their "Trekking Heavy" is about their heaviest sock - at least that I have tried. Normally I would NEVER want a sock this heavy. However, this serves the PERFECT purpose for me. I have an old, used to the max pair of backcountry ski boots with trashed liners. While I buy the latest and greatest jackets and pants, I'm too cheap, or at least don't see the point, to invest in new boot liners. Hey, nobody sees them so why invest good $$? Anyhow, these socks provide a great extra cushioning and fill for old liners. They can extend the life for, well, in my case, years. And on top of that they are just rad socks in that at the end of the day your feet feel great and there is no totally obnoxious stick. If you like to hike around in warm, heavy socks, get these. Or if you are like me and want to keep from spending mucho $$ on new liners, get these. In either case you will be pleased.

Sumptuous Socks

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I wear the SmartWool Trekking socks with a polypropylene sock liner while hunting in northern Idaho and I'm a notorious weenie about cold feet - these socks are the best.
I'm a woman, 5' with size 6 feet. I've owned both Small and Medium depending on what was available. I actually prefer the M's since they come further up my leg.
These socks stay pretty darned cushy even after a couple seasons of use. Socks are expensive and I don't make the investment lightly, these SmartWool Trekking socks are worth every penny.

Warm

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I not only love these socks for the nice padding while hiking but these are also great for keeping your feet warm. Pull on a nice dry pair of these and crawl into your sleeping bag under the stars on a chilly night and your feet will stay warm all night. Never had cold feet with these. They are also great at pulling moisture away from your skin.

the real deal
The Real Deal

If you are looking for a sock that will ACTUALLY keep you warmer.... this is it. Living in a northern state my feet get cold! I have tried many "heavy duty" socks in the hopes that they would provide some extra warmth; none have made a difference.
But this sock really does the job! I have been wearing them twice a week in below 0 weather and I haven't had cold feet at all.
No wear or tear either! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Keep your feet dry, warm, and happy!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

I bought these for a friend for the holidays and she is really happy with them. She commutes on foot in the middle of winter months and so I wanted to get something that would keep her feet warm.
Worn around the house they are so thick they almost have a slipper-like feel to them and will always keep your feet dry/warm.
I love SmartWool and these are one of their greatest products if you tend to run on the colder side.

Warmest socks around

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Hiking through deep snow is the best test of a pair of winter socks, and these pass all around. Durable, comfy and warm in the coldest of settings. Make sure you have room in your boots for them because they are a bit thick. If you're tired of having cold feet you won't be disappointed.

Super warm and durable

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

These are great socks for winter hiking. They fit true to size if you wear a liner underneath. They are fairly heavy, I would suggest the lightweight or PhD versions for summer hiking. These wick really well, and are plenty warm for winter hiking or even a day in the deerstand. I have put many miles on these, and they have held up well. You can machine wash these on cold cycle, but I recommend air drying, as I have had a few pairs shrink in the dryer. They will not shrink if air dried. If you have big boots, hike in cold weather, or want some super-warm socks, these are for you! Do make sure you have room in your boots for socks this thick, as they are really thick and pretty cushy!

Hiking and Mountaineering Miracle Socks

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

When many are complaining of cold and sore feet I'm always thankful for my SmartWool Trekking Socks. These heavy weight feet savers not only make my La Sportiva boots more comfortable but also add warmth and life to my feet. I've been using these socks for over four years now (not the same pair all the time) and they never seem to wear out.

More like trekking slippers

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

These socks are dense! Great for house slippers, for hiking, though, be sure to size your boots with extra room. In order to get such density, these socks do not fit snugly like most wool socks.
Materials 77% wool, 22% nylon. 1% elaetane.
Great hunting socks

Cold- meet heavy

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I have a pair of these and only use them for the coldest applications. that means -30 and below hikes, or coldwater drysuit diving. THey kill it for cold stuff. Size 12 fits into the large super well. Super warm, and nice and cushy!

The Best, No Contest

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I am something of a sock connoisseur, so it means something when I say that these are the best socks I have ever owned. They are beautifully warm and comfortable to wear on a mountain or around the home (I'm wearing some right now). I only ever wash them on impulse, as they never smell or feel like they actually need washing unless you've been walking around somewhere greasy or muddy. They are rather thick though, so not much good if your boots are already too small.

The one

Great socks. Keep the dogs warm, wick sweat, I use the heavyweight all year round for hiking, skiing, anything outside. Only complaint is that it seems like the heels wear out fairly quickly, but that may be due to wearing them almost constantly.

Excellent!

I'm getting 2+ years out of these socks. Wick moisture and stay soft even on long days. Worth the $$$.

Responded on

Good point. I will update it. Just used them sunday on a climb in my TNF S6K boots, stayed warm and dry.
