    Yaks smell, your socks shouldn't.

SmartWool uses their long lasting blend of wool and nylon to make their Trekking Heavy Crew Sock as adventurous as you are. The sights and sounds of an exotic land should not be overshadowed by the smell of your socks. Arch support and padding aid in keeping foot muscles relaxed and protected during long trips. Wool has the ability to keep your feet warm and dry while the outside temperature goes from chilly to steamy. Foot funk and odors are naturally repelled for day after day on the trail. Wash these wooly socks in a stream and they'll be dry before you know it.

    THICK

I love smart wool socks. Just be aware these are super thick! That's the only reason why they get a 4 vs 5 rating. I wear them around the house in the winter and with my Sorel pull-on boots.

      Our family loves SmartWool socks

These socks were purchased for warmth when cross-country skiing. They are bulky, cushy, and warm. They are made in the US which is always a bonus. shoe size 8.5-9 women's, M fits well. I like that the toe seams lie flat and do not irritate.

Great socks to give and get for yourself

Socks that are great for boots, home, or just stuffing in Christmas stockings. My sister's old pair were looking a little tired so she got the upgrade to a new pair!

What's worse than sub-zero temps under a tarp in a snowfield in Utah? Waking up at 3am under said tarp because your feet are cold! terrifying! This was my experience BEFORE I bought these socks. I have 3 pairs now for when I work the backcountry winter as a field guide---one for AM, one for PM, and one pair that I keep exclusively for sleeping. They are soft, not scratchy, breathable, and wool is naturally anti-microbial so the stink stays to a minimum. I truly suggest these socks for long cold weather treks, or winter weekends camping out with the kids so your feet stay toasty!

Great value and they are worth every penny. A great deal of padding all the way around and they are warm as can be. I just got them so can't comment on durability but they seem to be very well made so i have high hopes that they will stay like this for years.

Specs wrong, but good looking socks

I received these two days ago. The website clearly shows these are 80% merino wool, but the package shows 70%. I contacted a rep online and they told me "the site info has not been updated from when they changed the composition of the socks."

So, hopefully they'll update their website soon so there's no more confusion.

I haven't tried them on yet, but they look pretty solid.

Was looking for some thick socks for when it gets a wee bit nipply and these are just the remedy. Smart wool is hard to beat when it comes to socks to adventure in. These feel really really good. It's like I put two teddy bears on my feet and they are giving me a cuddly bear hug. Highly recommended!!!

        Great heavy hiking sock.

This sock is perfect if you are going somewhere that you have to leave trails behind. Any time I go hunting with my family these are the go to socks for me, my two brothers and my dad. Wear these with some gaiters and you will never have to worry about discomfort from moisture or unwanted debris getting in your boots when you are in the think of things. I wear size 11-11.5 socks and shoes in most brands and the LARGE was perfect for me.

Overall great heavy duty socks that are great for hiking off trail or in cold weather. Every adventurer should have at least a couple pairs of these ready to go.

I bought these socks to keep my feet warm during cool weather camping (night time temps of ~15-30 deg F). They are super comfy and keep me toasty. I'm a very cold sleeper but they're up to the challenge. I haven't really worn these with shoes (except to go pee in the middle of the night) so I can't speak to that functionality. I wear a women's 6.5 or 7 shoe and the small fits perfectly.

        No other hiking sock needed

I hike and backpack with SmartWool Trekking Heavy Crew Socks and I never use a liner or any other gimmicky apparatus in my boot. I never get blisters. I've tried other wool socks and they just do not perform as well.

I was looking for a couple sturdy wool socks for hiking as well as for wearing with boots during the winter. I really liked the brand Wigwam, but since Backcountry doesn't carry these, I went with another sock brand I trust: Smartwool. I have been very impressed with their ski socks, so I decided to try their wool hikers as well. I have only worn them a couple of times but they are really toasty, and due to the length of the pile on the inside (yarn that faces your foot) they are also really cushy. I agree with another previous reviewer though, they are thick enough that you should wear these with shoes that are roughly a half size to a full size bigger than you normally wear.

        Welcome to heaven

I am not saying that I am a sinner, but I never thought I'd get to walk in the clouds. These Smartwools are like walking on a cushion of air, a cushion that keeps you dry and warm. These are better than a lot of slippers I have worn! I have bought Smartwool for years and never realized what I was missing. Killer on the mountain, awesome on the street. Treat your feet!

        Very Warm

This is a nice, thick pair of socks. Be sure to account for their extra volume because your boots will feel tighter. To me they seemed to fit slightly large/loose, but still completely wearable. I wear size 7.5 sneakers and I got the mediums as per the size chart. Looking forward to some winter hiking in the Adirondacks with these.

        Umm.. Wow.

Alright, so I'm not active, let's get that out in the open. I got these to wear in the winter because I suffer from Reynaud's Syndrome in my toes and they will get cold and turn white even if the rest of my body feels fine. Trust me, it's a terrible feeling and I wish it upon no one. These socks are SO DARN WARM and provide an amazing cushion for my feet. They are VERY thick and definitely require shoes that are .5-1 size bigger than what you would wear with "normal" socks. For reference, I am a female with size 9.5 feet and I got these in a medium, they fit perfectly!

Smartwool; what else is there to say?

Best socks ever. I've been wearing Smartwool Trekkers for about 14 years now, from the blazing hot flightdeck of an aircraft carrier, to the glaciers of Patagonia, to the jungles of Honduras, and they've never let me down.

Would these work well inside fishing waders...

Would these work well inside fishing waders in the winter? I've had a few pairs of SmartWool in the past, but they have either shrunken up or gotten stretched out. I haven't found a pair that doesn't do one or the other. I need a pair for winter fishing as well as a pair for summer fishing with potential for a few miles and full days on my feet.

        Best Answer

I would say ABSOLUTELY! These are great for staying warm and being on your feet all day. I have worn them on long winter hikes, as well as spring day hikes.

For the past 4 months, I have only had 3 pairs of socks. One of them is the Heavy Trekking SmartWool. Even with constant use, I have not experienced any stretching. I hand wash and air dry all of my wool clothes to avoid shrinkage.

        Give them a shot!

Would these socks be good to use in a three season mountaineering boot. Looking for a socks that will give me enough padding and support but not just roast my feet

I have a pair of these.. but I only use them in the winter. They do have great padding and comfort, however I find them to be too warm from late Spring to early Fall. They are definitely too heavy and warm for the typical 3 season temps (40F-80F+).

Are you going to be doing high altitude mountaineering?

        Ryan,

I agree with Eli: they're a little warm for summer months. Check out the Icebreaker mid crew sock (http://www.backcountry.com/icebreaker-hike-mid-crew-sock-mens) for something with a little (less) cushion that you won't cook in. I own a light crew pair and love them, and other reviewers have said they outlast smartwool by a longshot (and they're cheaper, to boot).

        Happy trails!

The SmartWool Heavy Crew Trekking socks are a great choice for three seasons plus light to medium winter use. I always wear them with a silk or polypro liner. For cold winter activities, an insulated boot is your best insurance against cold feet plus a heavier sock. I wear a pair of boiled wool Dachsteins for snowshoeing. Here's more information:
