There's nothing better to have next-to-skin in the cold than the Smartwool Sport NTS Zip Shirt. That's what NTS stands for, and if you still think wearing wool (especially Smartwool) will make you itch, we'd like to welcome you to our planet. The Sport NTS Zip Shirt is made, like all Smartwool garments, from ultra-soft, machine-washable, naturally odor-fighting, temperature-regulating Merino wool, and it has all those aforementioned properties in spades. It has an anatomically streamlined fit, raglan sleeves, and flatlock-stitched seams…and it doesn't need hot coffee, ever—so it's more ready to kill it in the cold than you'll ever be.
Bottom Line: Warm up in wool and you'll never go back.
I was new to fancy gear. I love the outdoors but never knew how much i was missing. I can wear any kind of wool without complaint, but this smartwool stuff is awesome (though i assume all merino wool is similar). I bought mine at a Nordstrom Rack for $40 bucks and was hooked. After going to whistler the same weekend I was so impressed by this shirt that i bought another one on the drive home. For similar people who are new to merino wool I offer you this- when wearing a normal plain old white cotton undershirt in a long car ride, with sun through the windows my back can sweat against the seat cushion pretty bad regardless of how cool the rest of me is. However when wearing this, i just don't even notice, the smartwool shirt never gets wet. Plus it's really warm. While the Northwest (US) isn't nearly as cold as some chilling negative 40F weather in Colorado, this is a great way to start for warmth. I'm naturally warm and I can get away with just this and a thin softshell jacket down to freezing if I'm wearing gloves. I'm a thin 6'1" 165lbs and wear a medium. I actually preferred smaller rather than bigger (not caring if it shrunk and the sleeves were short, I'd rather the sleeve cuffs not show underneath the next layer. Perfect, it's not obnoxiously short, the medium actually was the perfect fit even though i wanted it a little small. Last note: my wife is quite sensitive to wool and she said she can stand it but would probably look for something softer given the full price. That said we're still looking to find her one at the same price i paid.
These are the best base layers, hands down. Merino outperforms and can take much more of a beating than any synthetic I've ever worn. The orange color is great, very stylish which is quite different than the standard SW baselayers of the past. I'm 6'3 220 and wear a large. The fit is snug and the length is sufficient (length is my biggest complaint with the older SW baselayer tops, but this seems to have been resolved across the board)

I've tried a lot of different base layers over the years and this one is the best one by far. Form fitting, warm, wicking, stylish. And it doesn't stink. Pretty tough to beat.
Love this shirt. At 6' and 170lbs, the medium fits perfectly. I have long arms and tend to have problems with sleeves, but this has generous sleeves, and for someone with average/shorter arms, they allow for bunching for a little more loft if you're using as a base layer. Body is plenty long, I wear untucked but there's plenty of length to tuck and not pull out when moving, bending or reaching. The neck has a little bit of wiggle room when zipped, so no worries if you're claustrophobic.
Going to have to pick up some more SmartWool stuff!
This is a great shirt. The texture is a little different (think rougher, but not itchier) from other Smartwool products which may be why it has a different very slim/athletic fit. It appears to be a designed as a bicycle jersey, judging by the length of the zipper, however I am sure it will work great as a layer under ski jacket.
these Smartwool are better than the other smartwool shirts. The other regulart midweight turtleneck shirts used to be the best shirts you could buy, but these have a better shape a better look, and a longer zipper(which is awesome) great to have a longer zipper. by the way you make it WAY TOO HARD TO WRITE A REVIEW BY MAKING US FIGURE OUT WHAT OUR PASSWORD IS AND HAVING TO SCREW AROUND FOR !) MINUTES TO HAVE YOU EMAIL US ANOTHER ONE. ITs amazing that i took the time to dick around with this.
Looks great in picture, but.....much thinner than several other smartwool tops I have, I am an easy fit large for most tops and other smartwool tops. This fits tight to body, does not 'drape', its like a lycra bicycle jersey. The cut is 'off'. I am slim athletic build and it just doesnt look right. (Other smartwool tops look great) Might be ok as underwear, but then $90 is much too high a price, so am returning it. I might buy it at half price, for the looks. Maybe it would look good on you? maybe if it was made in Italy and not Viet Nam? The design would look great in slightly heavier weight and looser fit. Too bad.
