- Q & A
Great Cold Weather All around Jacket
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: medium
This is a toasty warm, but yet breathable jacket. The wool in the sleeves is soft and comfortable, and the core front panel section of the jacket is insulated. I have thus far used this jacket out on a rainy day for a hike, trail running, and as a belay jacket on a cold October morning of sport climbing. It is quite warm while still breathing well. It kept me toasty on the belay and then on the climb up it breathed enough that I didn't have to shed a layer to climb , which was quite nice. Works well trail running, and it did in fact keep me warm even when wet . Haven't gotten it completely soaked yet, but it shed light to medium moisture well. My only gripe, albeit not major, is that the sleeves were a bit loose. I would have preferred a tighter more athletic fit on the sleeves, and I don't have chicken arms by any means. I just felt with a bit more snugness in the sleeves it could keep more warmth in. Otherwise the sizing is pretty true to size overall. I am usually in between a small and medium and size up for more room in the bust area, but after trying the medium I think I could have perhaps avoided this sleeve issue if I went with a small, and will try this with future Smartwool clothing purchases. Otherwise, waist , shoulder and bust sizing seemed to be very true. Sometimes with athletic fit clothing , the bust can be very snug , usually leading me to size up, but this one fit quite well. I have washed this item once since I have had it , and just washed cold gentle cycle then line dried and it retained its shape well and did not shrink. One of the best things about merino wool is its natural antimicrobial properties, I can wear this several times even in very strenuous sweaty activities without having to wash it. Overall I am very happy with this jacket and look forward to buying more smartwool insulating pieces.
