A lot goes on in your shoe when you trail-run for miles. The Smartwool PhD Trail Running Mini Sock is ready for all of it—the heat, the sweating, the repeated impact. Wool-on-Wool technology reduces shock and abrasion by padding the heel and forefoot with durable yarn, mesh zones on the top of the sock let hot air escape, and the wool transfers moisture quickly and fights odor. The ankle-height cuff works well for super hot days.

Bottom Line: Happy hot trails.

Nice upgrade

I've always liked smartwool sock and now they've gotten even better. I'm mainly a trail runner and the trail socks have an added layer of cushioning to protect your feet from rocks and roots. They fit well and maintain their shape.

I need cushiony running smart wool running socks. Some for winter and some for summer. I live in the NE.

I'm going to give a dbl-thumbs-up to the Darn Tough socks. They really are darn tough! The best (not most, "best") cushion I've gotten from socks is from the Balega line. Wow! For my feet, they are awesome! I've got little peddies to walk around with the kids and more substantial trail models: all of them are nice and thick and cushy.

The smartwool adrenaline line offers a bit more cushion than the PhD's. I also like the Darn Tough brand that they also have here on BC (coincidentally Darn tough's are made in Vermont). They last forever good for cold or hot conditions and have cushion comparable to the adrenalines.

PhD & Adrenaline have about the same cushion if you compare light to light, med to med. PhD's use more wool in the toe & heel and less synthetics (nylon) - more durable and more sustainable!!!
The Trail Running model has the most cushion of the running series.

The PhD Smartwool sock IS the quintessential trail running sock for super long runs in relatively cool to cold climates. I own a few pair with over 600 miles logged and their still holdin' up. Other brands would look like swiss cheese under the same degree of punishment.

I agree you should go with the smartwool trail socks for the winter. They have more cushioning and thicker than the regular running ones and will keep your feet warm in cold weather.

Favorite trail socks!

By:

These are the best trail socks I own! There's plenty of cushion. They don't bind or rub at all. They also don't allow or create for any hot spots. They fit true to size and stay put with high impact running. Great buy!

The Socks that went to Post-Graduate school!

By:

I thought Smartwool socks couldn't get any better but I was wrong, they just got a Doctorate! This new series of PhD socks are amazing because they put the padding where it's needed but still let your feet breath while exercising. I got a whole slew of them for Christmas and I can't stop wearing them. I've run about 10 miles in them so far and my feet have none of the pains I had with the other 'community college' socks I own. They fit true to size and I'm sure they'll be great for everything from bar hopping to mountain biking!

I bought these socks for my husband to use while running. He has always worn Thorlo's and is not big into change. He loves them and wants me to buy more. He wants them for running and everyday use.

Great socks! Cushions provide nice support on the trails. Little warm on hot days but socks wick moisture away so your feet stays dry. I don't think I am going back to cotton socks ever again.
