To the summit.
Shoulder your pack and head for faraway alpine ascents with Smartwool's Phd Outdoor Mountaineer Sock covering your ten irreplaceable toes. Rather than risking hot spots, blisters, or worse during your trip, trust the efficient blend of merino wool, nylon, and elastane fibers in the sock to wick moisture away from your feet as you sweat in cold conditions. Smartwool specifically shaped the low-profile leg portion of the sock to sit cleanly under mountaineering boots, while adding 20-30 mmHG of graduated compression throughout the sock to encourage healthy circulation.
- Mountaineering-specific sock made for demanding ascents
- Merino blend wicks moisture while insulating
- Plush toe and heel areas add cushion to wear-prone areas
- Graduated compression encourages circulation and recovery

- Q & A
I like these. The bottom has extra padding but the rest is fairly thin which I like. It fits very snug and doesn't slip nearly as much as most ski socks. The compression is noticeable. I think these are a better sock than the stance ski socks, more compression, don't wear out, but the selection isn't comparable and they cost a lot more. I'd definitely buy more if they were on sale.
Overpriced, but good compression
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
I'm a SmartWool fan. Unfortunately, I didn't see any extra benefit from the PhD line. For the price, I think you will find better value in other wool-blend socks out in the market. I wear size 10.5 shoe, and LARGE sock size fits well.
An extra benefit of this sock is the compression component. If you're doing a lot of standing/hiking, the calf compression of the sock does make a difference. Hence, 4/5 stars instead of 3/5.
