SmartWool designed the PhD Snowboard Light Socks with one thing in mind—snowboarding. The mix of lightweight materials keeps your toes warm on mild winter days and works hard to keep your feet cool and comfortable while you hike the park.

  • Merino wool blended with nylon and spandex helps regulate temperature, manage moisture, and provide gentle compression
  • RilaWool technology uses reinforced panels for longer-lasting impact protection around your calves, heels, and toes
  • 4-Degree Elite Fit system uses two different elastics for extra flexibility and focused compression
  • Strategically placed ventilation zones get rid of overheated air
  • Flatlock toe seams are tough without creating hot spots inside your boots

Cant go wrong with these socks

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use these for skiing and snowboarding. They're pretty much the same as Smartwool's 3/4 cycling sock which I use for biking and even every day walking only these go over the calves. They are well padded and warm but they did shrink a little after a bunch of wash/ dry cycles.

at what temperature I should wear light vs ultralight version of this socks? ie. 10F light, 20F ultralight?
thanks

Its more of a matter of preference. Everyone experiences cold differently so we try not to give out exact temperatures. My personal preference is to wear a heavyweight sock when temps are 10F and below and a lightweight smartwool or icebreaker sock for anything above that on the slopes. I try not to go too light because your boot will provide a lot of insulation any ways and I like a snug fit.

I've Got These on Repeat

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I like these so much that I just keep ordering them. Extremely cushioned in all the right places. They hold up very well when used as a snowboard sock. I'm not sure how well they'd do under other conditions as I only use them for riding. Great down to about 15-20 degrees. Colder than that you'll want to move to a medium weight sock. Enjoy!

Undabar

Really nice sock. I have been using standard heavy weight smartwool hiking socks while boarding for years, but finally decided to try something more snowboard specific. Nice height for full coverage slightly above boot top, flex panels at the ankle keep the bulk down, and the lightweight version has been plenty warm on cold east coast days (granted this is probably boot dependent). Am a 10.5 and size L works great, as others mentioned plenty snug without being too tight. Would definitely buy another pair.

Awesome sock

I got these socks because I have plantar fascia (arch) issues. Co-workers here at backcountry suggested smartwool's elite fit system with the elastics in the midfoot to stabalize the tendons... boy am I glad I got these! I'm throwing out all of my old non-supportive snowboard socks and going 100% smartwool! I picked up 2 pairs of these lightweight and 1 pair of mediums and so far I like the lightweight better, they seem to keep my feet actually WARMER because my feet don't sweat as much. Also, the elite fit system helps increase circulation which further helps keep my feet feeling gravy even after 6 hours of hard-charging. LOVE these socks.

Snug and warm

These socks are great, snug and warm, I'm a size 10 and bought the large size and it feels great almost like a compression sock but not that much so.
