Once winter creeps into the mountains to stay, the Smartwool Men's PhD HyFi Full-Zip Hoodie serves as a dynamic mid-layer for your days at the resort or frigid mornings on the skin track. The blend of merino wool and nylon insulates your core without trapping moisture during demanding runs or climbs. The merino also naturally deals with odor so your top won't stink even if you can't do laundry between wears. Once the morning warms up, the full-length front zipper allows extra venting so you can keep your mountain mojo working in the bright sunshine. Articulated elbows and thumbholes let you flap your wings without exposing your wrists to finger-freezing winds. Flip up the hood when storm clouds fill the horizon and you're a few miles from home. Or grab this techy top for extra protection while waiting for your better half at the finish line of the Chicago Marathon.

  • PhD HyFi (64% merino wool, 36% nylon)
  • Wind- and abrasion-resistant, thermoregulating, naturally antibacterial
  • Articulated elbows

Here's what others have to say...

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

I love this jacket. It's in three seasons of my camping gear. I just ordered a second one because I have almost overused my old one. And they are not easy to find anymore, they stopped making the hood on the new version. I would definitely recommend this jacket to anybody who enjoys winter camping or cool camping as a layer. Awesome product!!

Great Mid-Layer

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

As some of the other reviewers noted, this is definitely not a base layer it you're looking to wear it next-to-skin. That said, it's an ideal second layer or outer layer on chilly fall/spring days. The morino/nylon construction provides great breathability and good resistance to wind. Plus, the hood fits snug against your face if you have to put up with some ridge-top gusts. I wear a medium and find the fit- hood and all- true to size.

Love this thing. It has kept me warm as a midlayer on the coldest day I've skied at -10 w/ -30 windchill. The hood is shaped well and fits under the helmet without bunching. You can tell a lot of thought went into the development of this product as the performance is what you want and it keeps ya looking fresh. I recommend this product to anyone looking for a hooded midlayer.

Not a base layer

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:True to size

I hoped this would be an awesome base layer for cold skiing/cycling days. The thumb holes and integrated hood seemed functionality perfecto. The product weight indicated this thing was burley and heavy duty.

Once it arrived, construction and materials seemed pretty good to me. Unlike the previous reviewer, I'm a standard medium. 32 inch waist, 40 chest. This HyFi article was a perfect fit as an additional "jacket" type layer but a touch too big as an insulation layer. I couldn't fit this under a cycling jersey or as an intermediate layer before some down and a ski jacket. As a jacket this thing would have been pretty decent, but again, as a base layer it wasn't what I expected.

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs small

Material did not feel as nice as smartwool pre - VF acquisition.

Thumbholes are nice touch, but quite thick. Zippers are of good quality.

However fit is very standard sizing as opposed to some elastine which would make it more athletic.

Im 6'3" and quite slim and had to return it because sleeves were too short.

This hoodie fits your average size guy. So if you stray from the standard S,M,L,XL - you may want to try the hoodie for sizing before you buy.
