SmartWool especially designed the Women's NTS Lightweight Top to go next to your skin. Layer it for cold weather sports, or just wear it on its own for a fall or spring hike. Extra-soft Merino won't itch--but it will wick, dry, resist odor buildup, and breathe. Offset princess seams create a flattering fit and keep seams away from your backpack straps for chafe-free wear.

Bottom Line: Smart design right next to your skin.

Too Itchy

By:

I am a big fan of wool, but this shirt was way too itchy for me. My Icebreaker and Drizabone shirts are WAY softer. I wouldn't recommend this unless you have very tough skin.

Girlfriend loves it!

I wear products from Icebreaker, Ibex, Smartwool, Earth Sea & Sky. I was trying to get my girlfriend into wool clothing, and this looked like a simple stylish piece. She's a petite 5"3, and the XS fits her perfectly. I also bought her a NTS microweight shirt, but she prefers the softer feel of the NTS lightweight weaving. She wears it all the time now.

I've turned her into a merino wool fan.

What is NTS and how is this different from other Smartwool (non-NTS)

What is NTS and how is this different from other Smartwool (non-NTS) tops that are less expensive?

NTS stands for Next-to-Skin; this indicates fit. NTS product is more form fitting than non-NTS, for being worn as a base layer.

I'm not sure what non-NTS piece you are comparing this to, but typically NTS fit will not dictate price. Other factors, such as material weight, or features will define changes in price point.

From winter to summer

By:
December 20, 2009

I bought this shirt for a trip to Patagonia, which I just returned from. Summer is just starting there, but it is still cool in the southernmost places and in the high plains. Wore this under my vest and/or rain jacket, then by itself with dressier pants for dinner. After 7 or 8 wearings it still does not need laundering. Really, really comfortable - I can't usually wear any wool but cashmere because it makes me itch.

Great layering piece

By:

Got this in magenta on SAC. The solid colors are more versatile than the color I got, which definitely looks like an athletic piece. I've already worn mine as a baselayer for winter activities (breathes great and kept me warm), and it's very comfortable for just lounging around the house. Highly recommended!

Cute and functional

By:

This top is cute and will keep you warm even for how thin it is. It's great to pack on trips to the cold because you won't have the bulk. I have a long torso and this shirt still manages to hit the bottom of my waist, which I love. The only issue I do have with it is that it's still itchy. Wool is always itchy, I thought smartwool would be different. Or maybe I just have really sensitive skin, but either way, I find myself scratching my tummy and back.

Most versatile shirt I have

By:
December 13, 2009

Since winter has been blasting Wisconsin, the only time I've taken this shirt off is to shower the past few weeks. The cut is perfect for me - longer in the torso with a wide band rimming the bottom so it stays put and doesn't ride up. I wear this shirt under a cardigan to work and the wool is soft enough that I can even wear it to bed. That's the beauty of next-to-skin. I can't wait to take this base-layer backpacking in the summer. Wool is great for odor control and this will be my go to base layer for all of my outdoor expeditions over my other synthetics which start to smell bad on day two of a backpacking trip. If you're debating what weight to get, the lightweight is the way to go. It's warm enough that you can just layer a bit when it is really cold outside, but cool enough that you can wear it by itself when the temps start to crank up in the spring. Perfect for leaving camp and hitting the trail on a cool morning, perfect for lounging around the house, and perfect for looking stylish on your way out the door.
