two-tone graphite shirt

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs small

These are great shirts, and even the midweight works well in Texas summers. But be aware the graphite shirt is not exactly as pictured. Smartwool for whatever reason added light gray material under the armpits and down the sides offsetting the darker graphite of the shirt. I'm not sure why it's not pictured, but I don't blame BackCountry -- it's the same shirt picture used everywhere. I recently ordered one thinking they'd finally stopped only to discover the picture was wrong, and chose to send it back (with no hassles) since I already had one.

Is this shirt skin-tight fit? as in, NTS - next to skin. Am looking to get a merino base layer that fits very close.

Best Answer

Yes, this base layer is defintiely a NTS fit, it also tends to run a little small from what I've heard and seen, so if you wear a medium, I would recommend going up to a large.

Hey Igor,

My suggestion is to get your chest measurement and check out our size chart to get a good comparison for size. If I had to guess though, I would say a Small or Medium will probably be your outcome.

Good. Not perfect.

Let me preface this by saying that I love SmartWool. The only issue I have with it is that SmartWool just doesn't seem as durable as the other leading brands of merino clothing, except when it comes to socks.

The NTS Lightweight Top has all the great properties of merino. It wicks well, keeps me warm when wet, and doesn't stink. My only issue is that it started to get holes almost immediately and hasn't held up.

Love my Smartwool

Great layer I use it by itself on warmer spring days and part of a layer system in the winter and fall. Great shirt. Just started to get some holes after 2 years but I wear it constantly so it's expected

    Pretty good

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I love my Smartwool apparel usually, and those this fits well and is long enough to tuck in I find it to be a tad scratchy. It's not so scratchy that it's annoying, but it's definitely not up to the normal Smartwool quality I expect. It's warm though.

    Fav hiking shirt

    • Gender:Male
    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

After wearing synthetic shirts for a few years while hiking and backpacking, i picked this tee up after trying the base layers the previous winter and loving them. The shirt dries super fast, doesn't retain odors like synthetic, and keeps you warmer than synthetics will. Merino wool is more or less a superior product. I did however put a thumb through the armpit while trying to take it off. Also keep away from any velcro.

Great Sirt that works as advertised

Excellent shirt that doesn't stink after 5 days backpacking. I've put this shirt through its paces and wool will replace most of my polypro items in the future. Has pilled a tiny bit after fairly heavy use and will stick with polypro items for things like rock climbing due to abrasion resistence.
