Heavyweight long-underwear bottoms just make your legs turn into sweaty logs by the end of the day. And ankle-length long-underwear bottoms make it seem like there's about 50 yards of fabric bunched up inside your boots. Welcome to the SmartWool NTS Lightweight Boot Top Bottom. Lightweight merino wool naturally regulates your body temperature, and the shorter length means no more boot bunching.

Poor quality

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:True to size

Three holes developed on a seam in the right leg after one day of use. And these were the right size--I wasn't stressing the seam with a fat leg! I promptly returned them to Backcountry. I've never had this experience with SmartWool before.

Finally, although I would have kept them but for the quality issues, I did not like the fit. The rise is really long. You have to hike these things up to your true waist.

Great base layer

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

I am 5'6", wear 30 or 31 waist jeans, usually wear medium. I tried these at a store and went for the L, I wanted something just a bit looser fitting and these work perfectly. No bunching, no smell, great for skiing and handle a wider range of temperatures with just a shell pant than I expected. Get 'em.

No more folding and rolling!

These wool bottoms are definitely great, but not quite perfect. The wool is super soft and warm, and it does a great job of regulating my heat/sweat as well as reducing stank.

Unfortunately, the sizing is just a *bit* off. I'm a run-of-the-mill 6'0" 170 lbs. guy, and here are my "issues" with the fit.:

The inseam from the crotch to the articulated knee is just a bit too long. So if you fit your length well, then the articulation is a bit too low, and if you fit the knees well then its a *teeny* bit bunch in the thighs. Not a huge issue at all but I thought I'd mention.

As for the overall length, I agree it could be a tad longer. I just tuck the bottoms into my socks and everything ends up just fine.

If you're on the fence about them, I say get 'em! If they don't fit then you can always return them, but if they do fit..... you'll be super happy!

Fits true, great baselayer

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

I found the fit true to size. I wear 34x32 pants and L fits great, falls around upper calf, just above the boot.

Otherwise a great baselayer, dries quickly, able to be worn for a couple days without feeling a difference, does not soak up sweat.

runs short?

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

Well, of course it runs short at 3/4.

However, being 6'5" usually wearing 34x34 i went with L: bending one's knees results in pants cuff slipping and sticking up around the back of the knee.

maybe XL would have been a better deal, but i doubt an additional inch in length would have made up for a oversize fit around the hip..

else, trim and garment are of well known smartwool quality.

i'd give it a 4 if the these cuffs wouldn't be that rigid but more snug.

and yes, keeps you well warm enough worn underneath a gore tex bib (if you keep moving).

Great base layer

Awesome base layer for skiing, the 3/4 length really helps avoid bunching up at the boot! My socks meet the bottom of the pants perfectly so my entire leg is covered. Im 6'1" and went with the size large, they fit very well.

Super Warm for all your activities

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

After having the full length version of these, I finally got the 3/4 and I am in love. They are really functionally and you get the same performance and warmth of the full length mid weight. Great athletic cut and fit.
