SmartWool uses engineered knitting to create their Xtra Heavy Mountaineering socks. Built in arch support and padding make these wool wonders wearable for days on end. The naturally crimped surface of wool allows it to trap warmth and puts spring into your step. Soft and durable Merino wool is easy to care for and will remain itch free and odorless.

Bottom Line: Don't get cold feet at the altar of altitude.

SmartWool Mountaineering Xtra Heavy Mid-Calf Socks

pricey for socks, but I still have all my toes. It was down to about 12 degrees F; my feet weren't warm, but no frostbite.

Best trekking socks I have ever worn

Very nice cushion and warmth. Wore them all day climbing in my heavy hiking boots. I wore out way before they gave out. Nice heavy sock.

Good cushion and fit

By:

This sock provides a great amount of cushion for your feet and have a slightly less tight fit than Patagonia Heavyweight Mountaineering socks. These fit better on my wide feet where the Patagonia socks felt a little too snug on my feet and calves. They do however have slightly less cushion on the bottoms than Patagonia's, but will most likely be a better choice for someone with wide feet.

Can't be beat.

These socks are the best. I use them as "oversocks" over a thin pair of nylon socks. They help fill out the wiggle room in my size 14 hiking boots. They're comfortable and they don't itch and they wear like iron. No holes or tears or frayed threads after several washings. Actually, this is my second pair. I bought the new pair because the first pair is so great. A good investment.

not as good as i thought

definitely cannot go out with only these socks to keep your feet warm. if you wear these socks you must wear a warm boot too. socks are no more special than a cheap pair of wool socks

You just can't go wrong.

With a nice thin liner, my feet were warm, cozy and blister free on my last outing which included two, 6 hour days in plastic boots on steep terrain. Recommend these to everyone.

Super duper sock

I really don't want to try another one. This sock is super tough and on Rainier they did great with my Makalu boot. They are good for skiing, but you probably want a thinner sock. If your going to buy them , but 2-3 pairs because your just going to have to buy them later when this is all you want to switch out with on a trip.
