Midweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Wear the SmartWool Men's Midweight Zip-T long-sleeve shirt for stop-and-go aerobic activities or as a warm base layer. This top is ideal for situations where the weather and temperature fluctuate, like in alpine environments. SmartWool's porous natural fibers move moisture while it is still in vapor form before it has a chance to condense on your skin; you stay drier and more comfortable throughout your alpine foray. By comparison, synthetics transport moisture after it condenses; you must visibly sweat before any moisture management begins, which leads to chills once you stop moving. SmartWool fiber is also highly adaptable to a broad range of conditions; it keeps you warm when you rest and cool when your pulse and core temperature heat up. This naturally anti-microbial shirt features a ˝-length Zip-T collar for increased ventilation control. Flatlock-seam construction reduces chafing, and an active fit allows for bulk-free layering that doesn't inhibit your freedom of movement.

Bottom Line: This Midweight deals out heavyweight thermoregulation.

Great Shirt

By:
April 30, 2007

I work 8 days on 6 days off, in the wilderness. This shirt is a great base layer when it is cold and a great single layer when it is warmer. It also does a really good job of keeping the stink at bay when wearing it for 8 days in a row. Good sun protection too. Overall great shirt and will buy another one.

I elk hunt at 4500-5000 ft. I am looking for a base layer, either lightweight or midweight wool undergarmet. This base layer is to be used with a sleeping indian wool shirt. The weather in October can be snowy and cold, or in the mid 4o temp. I can't decide on a lightweight or a midweight smartwool undergarmet.

I'd say it's thicker than a light t-shirt definitely. That being said, I think this would be great for your purposes.

The midweight is about as thick as a light t-shirt but more breathable. I would go midweight.

Also consider how much standing you will be doing. The midweight still breathes exceptionally but will be warmer while you are waiting for the trophy to come into your sights!

Smartwool rides again!

By:
October 22, 2009

I love everything about this shirt. I've used it by itself for running in the 50's more than anything else and it has excelled in every aspect. It feels grrrreat NTS. I can dump heat if it builds up with the zipper and usually I zip it right back up (and it stays wherever I want it to). The neck may be a little confining zipped all the way up for thicker necked dudes. It breathes exceptionally, of course, so I stay cool while staying warm and comfortable. I can't say that I stay totally dry but the sweat build up is noticeably less compared to a MH Polartec Powerstretch I sometimes use alone. The sweat only stays where the wool isn't in direct contact with my skin, i.e.- between pecs, along spine on lower back. I am 6'0" 180lbs and the medium works great for me. Sleeves are long enough and the length is well enough below belt line. I got it on SAC but could definitely justify the price. I intend to get more Smartwool products!

Totally a lady getter... they'e all like "ohh it's sooo soft" and then they lean in for a feel and that's when you know you've got them. I usually am dressed as a giant prawn as part of my job and this shirt keeps me dry and medium to heavy comfortable. The prawn costume is NOT easy to get off (63 buttons) so I am in it for long periods. Its not very wide but the claws make it a bit cumbersome. I travel as part of a medium large group of prawns and this shirt keeps us all feeling great inside our sometimes hot costumes. Thanks smartwool.

if I would technically wear a Medium...would a Large be less

if I would technically wear a Medium...would a Large be less form-fitting? Or would it still cling?

Merino wool base layers work best the closer they are to your skin. First, for temperature regulation. Second, when you perspire, the wool will wick the moisture away in the vapor state to keep you dry. If it's too lose, the moisture will condense on your skin, thus you get wet.

They are supposed to cling. I too am technically a medium. I normally wear shirts that are large to extra large. But a large SmartWool T would still form-fit but be more wrinkly, you would kind of look like a Shar-Pei. So if you feel uncomfortable in something this form-fitting wear a shirt over it. (There is no hiding a gut in this shirt.)Hope this helps.

Great base layer - good enough as single layer on warmer days

By:
August 19, 2009

Comfortable, warm (and cool if worn as a single layer). I used it during a 5 day sea-kayaking trip in San Juan Islands and was great. Comfortable, warm in the evenings when camping. Also keeps the stink away ... My wife really appreciated me wearing it :-)

After wearing this for a month straight, its the ONLY base layer I will ever use. Works marvels on keeping the funk down and holds up to abuse.

Great mid-weight top!

By:
November 26, 2007

This is a spectacular shirt for a mid-weight top. I have 2 Icebreaker shirts, light and a mid crew, this layer is in- between the weights and feels very smooth on the skin. I tried an Ibex top and this fit tighter and and had less itch. The fit is very form fitting but stretches well for a lightweight under it. We will see how durable it is since this is their (merino) weakness. The collar is also a perfect fit, and I am pickey. Get one now, merino rules w/ no plastic smell and no static!

Excellent

By:
March 10, 2009

I am a 5-10 tall woman, who sometimes buys mens for better length fit. This top worked great for me for skiing. I actually layered it on top of another excellent merino midweight (Ibex Zepher womens) on colder days without anything else underneath my breathable ski jacket. I find that important to reap the full benefit. If I layer a polartec sweater on top of the wool base, it does not breathe as well as 2 wool layers... not shocking, I suppose:-)

The polartec will stop your merino working properly as it doesn't breathe and won't manage the sweat either. For best results layer merino on merino with just a breathable jacket - leave off the stinky synthetics :-)

Top notch

By:

I have several Smartwool products and have yet to be disappointed. The fit of this base layer is great, with plenty of length to tuck into trousers. When cleaning up around camp, in the low forties or less, it calls for some fast action when you’re stripped to the waist but immediately this base layer is slipped on, the warmth is there. The zipper is long enough though to work well when you want to cool off a little. My only concern would be wearing it without a shirt over it when there is a risk of being snagged. It may hold up just fine, I haven’t taken the risk though; I always wear a shirt over it.

There's nothing like Smartwool!

By:
January 4, 2009

I bought this zip-T for my boyfriend because I have two of my own and love them totally. My black one has a tiny bit of pilling on it that distresses me, but otherwise both of mine have worn incredibly well, and are on my must-bring list for any camping trip. I've literally worn my zip-T for days in a row and can report that they smell almost as good afterwards as they did straight out of the wash. I typically try to line-dry them, but have accidentally chucked them into the dryer a time or two and they don't seem to have shrunk at all. Absolutely worth the investment!

These are great

By:
January 16, 2008

I really like these shirts. I have 3 and I cycle through them as I ski and outdoor. The zipper really does well-- it never slides down even a little bit, which is a problem on lots of zippers-- if your a zipper-neck wearer you know what I mean. It also never yanks on my 4 day beard, which is nice. The warmth is great, and these never get smelly. I don't get smelly in general (I smell better as the days go, I am not kidding, they should bottle me), but this shirt doesn't even take on my good smell after several days. Odorless totally. This shirt is also good for working out. I don't work out in it, but I look like a fatty in it if I don't work out and I look totally ripped if I do, so it's a motivator. Also the zipper comes all the way down to the middle of your chest, which is very functional for letting the heat out, or attracting the ladies if you've gone down enough double-blacks to put some hair on your chest. I also like that the shirt is a little long so you can tuck it in and it doesn't come up. Great overall. Very durable-- I have washed and worn these many times and they still look new.

Just right!!!!!

By:
November 14, 2006

I have several Smartwool products, from ski socks, microweight shirts, bootlength pants, and the Snynergy jacket. They are all outstanding products. The midweight zip t-shirt is a great base layer. It is just the right thickness/weight to fit under other layers. The shirt is very form fitting and comfortable. What really caught my attention was the way the collar fit-very snug in a good way. I have several zip t-shirts from other companies, and they are always very loose fitting around the neck. Expensive but good quality and very comfortable.
