The SmartWool Women's Midweight Bottom has done a great job of keeping you warm and comfortable all day under your ski pants, so why put it away when the lifts close? It makes a fantastic après-ski legging when paired with a skirt (down skirt, perhaps?) and your fun, furry winter boots. In this new guise, you can enjoy the cozy merino wool into the wee hours, before you get up and do it all again the next day. Good thing wool has natural anti-odor properties, since it looks like this bottom is going to be getting a lot of use this vacation.

    • Soft merino feels great against the skin, insulates in cold weather, wicks moisture, and naturally inhibits odor
    • Wide self-fabric covered waistband is both comfortable and flattering
    • Flatlock seams go easy on your skin
    • UPF 50 protection blocks the sun before it can fry your skin
    • Item #SWL0822

    Smartwool Mid-Weight Bottom

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: large

I love Smartwool Mid-weight Bottoms! It is very cold where I live in Wyoming and I wear a lot of wool all year long. These bottoms keep me nice and warm for sleeping, too. They are very soft merino and the waistband is very wide and comfortable. I think they run a bit small. I am 5' 6" and weigh 120 lbs. I but a size large so I can put them on low in the dryer.

Super comfy and warm, fit just right

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I bought these in anticipation of moving to the Alps, which are much colder than the temperate PNW! Although I haven't tested them in sub-zero weather yet, I can already tell they will be perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and layering under my looser jeans, or wearing with dresses or skirts.

I was borderline between a small and medium since my weight is all in my hips, thighs, and booty, and is mostly muscular. I definitely could have fit into the smalls, but I'm glad I went with the medium because they have just the right amount of give. The smalls would have been skin-tight, which I find doesn't keep me quite as warm. The thick waistband is amazing. I really like the aubergine color (it really is spot on - maybe just a tad lighter and redder than an eggplant). I could see how someone without a curvy butt and muscular thighs might find extra room in this style, but it's perfect for me! Also, there is some room for longer legs (maybe an inch or two), in case there are any taller ladies checking these out.

    weird fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Tight in the calves, loose in the butt. Fabric stretches quite a bit and what fit well at first ends up loosening up a couple of sizes over a couple of hours. I've worn it a few times and although it did keep me warm, at the end of the day I was very uncomfortable with the extra fabric on my rear.

    Very warm

Bought these for my girlfriend who works extremely long hours outside in NYC winters. She absolutely loves them. Says they keep her warm and toasty.

    Light and Warm!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

Got these for my girlfriend. Here's what she had to say:

I love these leggings. I wanted something thin and lightweight so I could wear them under my ski pants, but without sacrificing warmth. Only downside is that the material isn't the softest and can be a little itchy.

    Perfect for me

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

I owned a pair of Smartwool long johns before, and I like the improvements. The wide waist band is great, and the sizing is better for me. I'm curvy, lately wear a size 14 in jeans, and bought an XL. The legs are just right - snug without being tight. I wear them under pants for hiking/backpacking and dog-walking, so I don't mind (and wouldn't notice) if the butt/waist sags, but it is a little loose around the waist, so it probably would a little if I wore them as leggings under a skirt. I didn't have any fuzzies unlike someone else's review, and they're very soft.
They're perfect for my use - hiking/backpacking. Highly recommended!

    Keep you warm

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: medium

These pants are nice and warm. The only complaint I have is they can be a little itchy. Other than that I love them. I ordered the aubergine and I love the color.

    Legs are a little skinny

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Small

My legs couldn't fit through the legs very well even though the sizing chart on smartwool's website said a size Small should fit me fine. I am 5'6" 125 lbs with a 27 inch waist, 37 inch hips and calves 14 inch circumference each. Everywhere else fit, except from the knees down. My calves were too big for these. I am not even that muscular yet if I had gone with a Medium it would have been too big! :(

    waistband defective

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: large

i love smartwool baselayers i have at least four midweight shirts so thought i could not go wrong with the bottoms as well. i got these in late november as a baselayer for steelhead fishing, and they are great, but after two months the waistband has shredded in the top half 3/4 of the way around. i would expect that maybe after seven years and a LOT of washings but i've maybe washed these twice, certainly never dried them.. and am pretty bummed for $100 they are already wasted. :(

    Hey Shannon!
That's bogus! Sorry to hear about your negative experience.
Smartwool does, however offer an excellent guarantee, they should be able to offer a replacement for you. I'd get in touch with them and see what's up.

I bought two pairs of these bottoms and had the same exact waistband problem with one of them after only one month! I bought them through EMS and they did the exchange for me, but now I fear that the other pair is having the same problem. Smartwool definitely needs to consider a redesign. For the price, a problem like this seems ridiculous. I like everything else about them but I doubt I'd buy more given this issue.

    Style & Comfort

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These bottoms are so comfortable and keep me very warm when I'm out in the cold. I paired the Aubergine Heather bottoms with the Taupe Heather/Aubergine Midweight Crew and they look/feel great.

    Worth the $$

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I've usually owned lighter weight long underwear, so this was a step up for me. I'm glad I got the mid-weight bottoms. They're super warm! I wear these to work under jeans, by themselves on cooler fall days, and under my rain pants on colder days while I'm cross country skiing.

I'm 5'2, around 150 lbs. I have muscular legs and a curvy body. I bought the medium in Imperial Purple Heather. They fit nicely, and perhaps my favorite part about the fit is the thicker/wider waistband. I don't feel like my waist is being squeezed, like I have with other long underwear bottoms. My only complaint is that they're not super flattering for me around the crotch area. But hey, as long as they keep me warm and cozy, I'm happy.

    Worth the $$

    Warm, comfortable and nice looking

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

They look great on their own or under a dress and keep my legs warm! In very cold weather I wear them with leg warmers though because they run above my ankles. I ordered a size small, although I think a medium would have been slightly better. I'm 5'8 and 130 lbs with slim, slightly muscular legs.

    Warm and Cozy

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This pair of long underwear kept me warm for my trip to Norway, I wore them layered with jeans and other materials Hiking/skiing/dogsledding and more and they are so comfy and I never got cold! They did develop a small hole in the knee though (worn about 15 times at that point). I will be using the warranty for new ones. I have the purple colour and it is very pretty, these fit normally .

I would suggest these to anyone looking for a midweight bottom layer.

Hey there. So depending on what part of the country you are moving to (i was visiting up in the Arctic Circle areas) I would def suggest some warm boots with great grip but easy to put on/take off. Merino wool socks are a must. Dont go too crazy, itll be cheaper when you get there clothes-wise!

But if you are moving to Oslo, its much warmer than you would think and you should be fine with some warm clothes sweaters etc. The normal!

    I can't believe I'm saying this, but...

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size

I wanted to love these, I really did. I blame it partly on how much I was lusting for a pair after waiting too long to snatch them up and they sold out time after time this past winter. I guess I built them up in my head.

The Taupe Heather color that I purchased was lighter than expected, lighter than the picture I believe. The fit was good, not any particular complaints there. (A size L worked for me. I typically buy a size L for leggings, M if they are from Stoic.) They were soft, not scratchy. But they were just okay. Also, the pair of leggings I received were super fuzzy - like there were poofy fluffy fibers sticking out of the leggings and my legs looked like a teddy bear. Not flattering.

I have bought three pairs of merino leggings this winter: one from The North Face, and two from Icebreaker. In my opinion, those purchases surpass this product from Smartwool.

    Unsure...

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am 5'10", 145 lbs, a size 6-8 tall in pants. I ordered a size large, because I have a muscular frame and booty. They were WAYYYY too big. I put them on and they instantly sag in the butt and the knees. I'm returning them, but unsure if I will size down and reorder in a medium or just outright return them. I'm afraid the material will sag with wear even in a smaller size. Too bad because the material is really comfy.

Best long underwear I've ever worn!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I wore my new long u'wear bottoms for 10 days straight skiing and snowshoeing over the holidays in Maine. Some of the days were bitter cold. This garment is very warm (can't beat merino for low-bulk warmth) and comfy. The wide waistband lies nice and flat. They're not itchy. They wash really nicely. I'm an athletic build, 5'6" and 145 lbs. and the size Large is perfect. (I bought the Medium for my daughter, 5'9" and 145 lbs. Both of us think we have the right size for us.) They hug nicely, don't bag at the knees. I've skied in New England for 50 years and this is the best long underwear I've ever had.

    Comfortable, fitting, smart

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I wasn't sure how comfortable these would be due to I have sensitive skin, bu with putting these on for the first time I was feeling great! They are get next to skin. They stretch a little but not enough to be frumpy. I'm taking these to Europe to me for the winter!

    Perfect!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

These are WORTH THE MONEY. Yes, they're expensive. No, you won't regret it. I wear these as leggings with skirts/dresses/tunics. They're incredibly comfortable, they won't sag or bag, they wash beautifully in a machine (I hang mine up to dry). (And they dry surprisingly quickly.) Worth every penny you will spend. Bonus: They come in lovely colors. I'm 5'10", 170 pounds, and the large fits like it was custom made.

Excellent, and Much Better than Others

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These tights are very warm, not scratchy, and are good for athletics, under not-tight pants, attractive enough with a skirt or dress to wear to work. They maintain shape, color, and texture even when worn and washed frequently. I wash mine by hand or in the machine inside a small mesh bag. I hang them to dry. These fit me well, and the best of the several brands I've tried. I'm 5' 6" 120lb with a small waist, a full bottom, and solid thighs from athletics. I bought a medium and these are body skimming, but not snug. By no means loose. These don't bite my crotch or thighs, the waistband lies flat, and they don't scoot down like other brands do on me. Again from my sports I have slender ankles yet muscular full calves, and these tights have room for my calves, too. Some brands like the Ice Breaker Body Fit 200 are too snug for me. The cuffs are perfect, and the length is right around my ankle. Not droopy and not riding up my lower calf. If I had longer legs, I might find these too short. But I love them. I've tried these, Ice Breaker, Stoic, and Patagonia. I now have three pair of these: black, dark aquamarine, and the heathered wine color.

    Best Underlayer Bottoms

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I LOVE these bottoms, Smartwool merino wool bottoms are awesome and this newer style is updated for the better. I have tried many different brands and I think these bottoms are great because they fit tight all the way to the ankles (which means no clumping in the ski/snowboard boots), they are warm and breathable (when I'm doing long ski tours my heat is regulated in these), and the cut is flattering enough to look good when hanging out after skiing in your long undies. The colors are really fun too. The wider band around the waist makes for a less-squeezed look as compared to Smartwool's older styles. The other pair I have (same exact material) has withstood the test of time- I don't have to baby them when I wash them and they haven't lost their resiliency. They are really soft and they hold their shape really well after wearing them everyday, all day for a week straight. They're not the cheapest but they seemingly last forever so they're well worth the price. I'm 5'5", 123 lbs and wear a size XS which fits great. If you are taller definitely size up, regardless of how skinny you are these pants are just the right length for me but barely.

is the aubergine heather more of a dark red or a purple?
