SmartWool NTS Midweight Bottom - Men's

Wear the SmartWool Men's Midweight Bottom for stop-and-go aerobic activities or as an insulating base layer. This warm pant is ideal for situations where the weather and temperature fluctuate, like in alpine environments. SmartWool's porous natural fibers move moisture in vapor form, creating a dry layer of air around your body that encourages evaporative cooling; you stay drier and more comfortable throughout your alpine foray. By comparison, synthetics transport moisture after it condenses; you must be moving and visibly sweaty for moisture management to occur, which can lead to chills once you stop moving. SmartWool fiber is highly adaptable to a broad range of conditions; it keeps you warm when you rest and cool when your pulse and core temperature heat up. This naturally anti-microbial pant features a covered elastic waistband, a traditional fly, chafe-reducing flatlock seams, and an active fit that allows for bulk-free layering without inhibiting your freedom of movement.

Bottom Line: Active thermoregulation designed for stop-and-go outdoor athletes.

The makes-you-sleepy kind of Soft

By:
December 30, 2008

Plenty of length in the leg so you won't end up with high-waters after washing. Soft waistband and fly. Chose smartwool because of the supreme softness - even compared to capilene. Not to mention the fact that they do a much better job of cooling (seems counterintuitive being wool) than synthetics. I am converting to smartwool for all of my baselayer needs from now on, not only for the comfort and performance, but for their sustainability practices. Highly recommended

I have tried numerous brands of leggings and these are the best for keeping me warm, wicking moisture and if the temps warm I am not sweating badly. SmartWool is a company you can trust to make quality products that last.

Large would be you best bet for a performance fit. XL if you like your base layer loose. The Smartwool size chart on this page has the specific measurements (even in cm) that you need to check.

These are really warm and not itchy at all (and I have that itch problem with some merino wools from icebreaker).... I have yet to test it outside, but think this is going to make the best thermal underwear I own.

SmartWool NTS Midweight Bottom

By:
October 20, 2010

This is a great midweight baselayer from SmartWool. I have had mine now for four years and have not been disappointed with it. I use this as my baselayer when my Capilene 2 is not adequate for the temperature. The wool is super smooth and causes no irritation. I am 6'1", 180 lbs and the large fits me very well. A great thing about wool is it keeps you warm when wet(and doesn't hold odor like synthetic).

Who Needs Pants

By:
October 19, 2008

Very light and warm. I took these with me for a 8 day hike along the Superior Hiking Trail in northern MN. It gets pretty cool up there in the fall, but with these babies on I stayed extra warm and dry (no sweat!) The only time I took them off was when I hopped into the bag for the night, and in the morning I awoke to a fresh smelling pair of long undies. The lined waist is extra comfy (seriously comfy), and didnt cause irritation under a heavy pack belt. The fit was well, more fit... not baggy.

All in all, I didnt pull out a pair of pants the entire trip; who says you cant look cool with a pair of shorts over a slim pair of long undies.

Super Comfy, Super Warm (even for a mid-weight), and extra durable (no tears despite romping through a ton of brush), and even after about 140 miles they didn't put up a stink.

Ultra Soft and Warm

By:
December 29, 2009

These pants are really soft. I'm not great with wool, but these don't itch at all. I also find they wick moisture much better than my synthetics. The only problem: they're really warm. These would be great for snowboarding or skiing, but anything where you're moving alot (like when I go nordic skiing)and you'll heat up really fast. The lightweight pants would really be a better option for nordic/snowshoeing, etc...

By:
January 7, 2010

Four stars?!? What?! These are the most comfortable long underwear available!! Yes, this is true, however they are just not as fitted as I would like/expect them to be.
The short of it (being as I am short on time) they are:
-warm!
-comfortable
-made from wool
-worth their weight in wool (gold)
-two legged

A+ would buy again!

Who Needs Pants - update

By:
October 23, 2008

First off let me make a correction to my last review: Yes, you do obviously sweat, but the sweat doesn't accumulate within the fabric. Ok, so I have had a chance to use the undies in some other settings. I find myself wearing them under my scrubs at work, as do a great job at keeping me warm when I am working in cooler areas of the hospital such as the ICU, or OR. I have also washed them a few times and they have only gotten more comfy, no shrinking (not even the %5 they say is possible). I might also add that wool and me normally do not mix I cant even wear wool socks. Thank god for those wrinkly New Zealand wonder sheep. Oh, and for all you PETA people out there I am told Smartwool, Icebreakers, and I think IBEX do not partner with suppliers who still practice Mulseing, in fact they supposedly (though one can never be sure) are advocates for the humane treatment of these woolly wonders.

I can't say there is anything wrong with these. They are durable, extremely comfortable, and the regulate temperature very well. I have worn these in hot weather or in freezing weather and have been fine in both. They make for great PJ's too when you're not out in the wilderness! The elastic band is covered with wool so is soft, and has a fly which is always convenient.

These are a next to skin fit (NTS) and run pretty snug, not uncomfortably or restrictingly so, but in a good way (they fit well underneath lots of other layers). Think somewhere between Lycra and skinny jeans.

By:
March 16, 2009

These are awesome. I'm been wearing them all season (~50 days on my way to 60). They keep me warm in subzero temps but also don't get too warm when it is Sunny and 45! I have vents in my ski pants, but I am pretty use to sweating on Sunny spring days and these have been great. Wear very well and look like they will go into next season without any issue. I have had issues with the "microweight" smartwool pants as they will rip easily because the materials is a lot thinner. Merino wool is the way to go!

I am looking to try a pair of smartwool as opposed to synthetics for my winter activities. I am looking for suggestions on the best choice for snowshoeing/active outdoor long underwear - Mid weight or micro weight. I know I will probably end up with both, but not sure which to buy. They would be worn under a soft shell pant

I live in VT and most winter days are between 5 and 25 degrees here. I could get by wearing JUST the midweight top (nothing else, no fleece or anything) when snowshoeing or XC skiing and be quite warm at 25 degrees (with no wind), and only wear a light fleece with the same weight when I'm working hard at 5 degrees. I tend to agree with Sandy. If they're available, go with the lightweight, especially if you have insulated snow pants. Get the midweight if temps are consistantly below 0.

Scott, it all depends on you and the weather. I'd say that I could get away with just the micro weight in the PNW, but I'm usually warm and its rarely below 20 here. On the other hand, if you're any where colder than that or you tend to get cold legs, I'd go with the mid weight. Being too hot is easier to fix than being too cold!

Not for tall skinny men

By:
December 12, 2010

So first of all, I gave this three stars only because of the fit, not the quality. The quality of the product is great and I have these in women's. Re fit: maybe this is ok for normal sized people, but not my husband who normally wears trousers 32x34 and is 6'1 feet tall. Following the size chart for waist sizes, I ordered him a Medium, hoping the inseam would be closer to 33" than 30". When I got the product, the inseam was about 29"-30" - way too short, even if you stretch them out. This is strange, because all the reviews and packaging say they're made somewhat longer to account for shrinkage. Maybe I got a dud. Anyway, I just wish companies like Smartwool would take cue from other retailers, who have started making trousers / jeans in more waist-length combinations. And I wish Backcountry would carry some brand that does - surely some of people who buy from Backcountry are slimmer and taller than your average person. If anyone has any suggestions on base layers that are for skinny tall people, I would be grateful.

I bought these for my young son, who borrows my women's wool midweight bottoms currently, so we are both already big fans of SMARTWOOL. Even though I bought these bottoms too big for him, he is looking forward to wearing his own men's bottoms equipped with a pocket for his plumbing needs.

By:
February 22, 2010

I wear these under a basic shell pant and they are perfect from single digits to spring skiing. I’ve used synthetic base layers for years, but none of them have performed as well as SmartWool’s products. They regulate temperature well, the fit is true to the sizing, and stay comfy all day.

Switching to Capilene

By:
December 8, 2009

First let me say, I really like a lot about SmartWool and its products. I have relied on it as my primary baselayer in cool and cold weather for alpine skiing, xc skiing, running, etc. and it has performed extremely well. However, I started noticing small holes appearing in all four of my SmartWool baselayers (tops and bottoms) after running them through the washer/dryer on delicate/low heat. Since discovering the holes I've started air drying them after running them through the wash, however this level of care is a little hit higher than I would prefer for a baselayer. I have decided to switch over to Capilene as I would prefer a more easy care garment.

Capilene requires more care. You can toss these in the washer and dryer no problem. Capilene is more prone to melting/burning, shouldn't be dried in the dryer, and tends to pill with wear and become rough. I also find capilene traps in smells, and needs frequent washing. I've worn it all, swear by wool.

Not much else to say about these pants, they are comfortable and warm. Not too tight. I slept in these on a camping trip in 20F and they kept me nice and toasty. Although for colder temperatures I would get the Heavyweight version of these (or wear another loser fitting pair of pants on top of the midweights).
