Sub-zero dawn-patrol missions would freeze a normal man, but your intelligence lead you to slip on the SmartWool NTS Midweight Zip Top to keep you dry and insulated as you skin up the ridge. The midweight merino wool breathes as you work hard to skin up the ridge and insulates as you pause at the top for de-skinning and pictures before your well-earned descent.

  • Midweight, next-to-skin merino wool fabric regulates your body temperature and resists the build-up of odors so you won't have to deal with stink on long hut trips
  • Form fit brings the fabric close to your body for comfort
  • Zip neck provides a little extra insulation and snow protection in the deep stuff but dumps excess heat when necessary
  • Hip length and drop-tail hem boost coverage
  • Flatlock interior seams and shoulder panels prevent rubbing and chafing when you wear a pack and move fast for hours

Great Fit

I'm 6'2" and 195 pounds. Both the large and medium fit well. If you're my size, go with the medium for a snug fit and the large for a slightly looser and longer fit. I went with the medium, which shows off my manly, lady-killing beer gut rather nicely. I prefer a snug fit in a base layer.

The sleeve length, shoulder width, and overall length of this base layer work very well for taller and slimmer guys with long arms and narrow torsos. If you're my size, and you're also considering the Arc'teryx Rho LTW, go with the SmartWool. It's a much better fit for guys with my body type, and it's more comfortable.

This is a relatively thick and warm base layer, however, so consider the SmartWool NTS Light 195 Zip instead if you run hot or your outdoor pursuits are more active. I'd go with this one for downhill skiing and the 195 for cross-country or backcountry skiing, for example.

great go to baselayer

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

this mid-weight merino is very much like Icebreakers GT in terms of weight and feel. I like this more because the way the collar lays and wraps my neck more comfortably without being too high.
I am 5'11 163lb with a 33" waist 34/35 sleeve length in dress shirts with broader shoulders. Anyway a large fits me perfect and is not baggy but very conforming without being too tight. Note: I wear a mediums in Smartwools NTS Light 195. Thanks to other reviewers I rolled the dice on size large in this model NTS Midweight and nailed it.

I have mostly Icebreaker items, mostly because I like the colors, but this is EXACTLY why I'm ordering this Smartwool top! Icebreaker should take the hint : )

Love this Shirt

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought one of these 3 or 4 years ago because I couldn't get the capilene I wanted in my size and have never looked back. I used it for work, bike commuting and touring, hiking, and just everyday wear. When it's cold outside I only take it off to wash. It always seems to give just the right amount of warmth without being clammy, feels wonderful next to my skin, and it stands up to wearing for a few days in a row without becoming a chemical weapon. It is starting to come unravelled at the collar, and cuffs but this is after 3 or four seasons of almost daily wear and many, many washings. I haven't worn capilene since buying this shirt, and intend to buy a couple more.

Perfect Baselayer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I have 3 of these and they are simply de rigueur in the Winters of Utah. Your mission, soldier, should you choose to accept it, is to wear Merino wool because it's the bomb. You will order several. You will wear them proudly. You will look awesome and be warm as heck!

Great for around town

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

Looks sharp, feels nice, and makes a man feel good about himself when he's walking around town! It's lightweight and is just the right amount of warmth when the weather is dipping into the 60's and high 50's. I normally wear a Medium but got a Large on this and it fits great.

HANDSOME SHIRT

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I bought this to use as abase layer to travel with, but it is good looking worn by itself. Feels great against the skin. I am 5' 10" 150-155 lbs the sleeves are a little long but they may be made that way on purpose.

Eric, you may have already done this, but you can initiate a chat with a BC rep using the link at the top of the page. They should have the most up to date information on inventory. Best of luck!

Awesome base layer

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a great top. It's very comfortable as a base layer under fleece on cold mornings, and works well by itself during aerobic activity (cross-country skiing) when temperatures climb into the 20's and 30's. The standup collar is great. For temps above 40, the lightweight model would be a better choice.

Warm and snug

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Very happy with this purchase, I love how the mid-section runs long so I can tuck it under my pants, also it is a bit fitting to keep close to your skin, great base-layer. The sleeves similarly fit snugly again to keep close to your skin. Yet it's not so skin tight that you'd feel uncomfortable wearing it asby itself.

Great fit and quality

  • Gender: Male

Great baselayer for hiking, skiing, mountaineering or any other activity in the cold. I have a lot (at least my wife tells me so) of smartwool products and this piece does not disappoint me neither. If i should pick on something it must be that the sleeves seem to twist around my arm, leaving the seams on top of my wrist instead of under. This also happens to me when wearing other brands baselayers so I guess its just a defect in the craftmansship when I was born. Two thumbs up!

Hot or Cold

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been using these for several ski seasons as my base layer - this is my third purchase of one. This wool is amazing in cold or hot weather. It keeps you warm and dry without overheating. Plus, it will go for several days without washing and still not get "ripe." If it does need washing, a sink, some soap, and an overnight hang is all it needs.

The perfect addition to layering

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I picked this up on sale a few weeks back and wish I had the cash at the time to get another one as well. This is absolutely perfect for layering as the temps have begun to dip into the teens and 20s, as well as form fitting and soft to the touch. I actually look forward to putting this on.

I have nothing negative to say about this product

Favorite Shirt

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These SmartWool shirts are the best. I wear my shirt around the house for low-bulk comfort and also of course for cold weather outdoor activities. Great for hiking, bike rides, or skiing. The midweight is perfect and can actually be used in a wide range of temperatures. I now have 2 of these and prefer them over the lighter weight.
