Description

There's nothing halfassed about this soft wool top.

The SmartWool Men's MerinoMax 1/2-Zip Sweater takes the magic of merino and molds it into a body-snugging baselayer for your cool-weather endeavors. Merino manages moisture vapor so your hot body doesn't overheat or become a breeding ground for dank-dwelling creatures. Huh? Merino moves pre-sweat away from your body to the sweater surface for rapid evaporation so you can run or ski hard and not be overcome by heat. Odor-causing bugs need a warm, moist environment to thrive. If the sweat isn't there, then the stink doesn't happen. The body-hugging fit means this 1/2-zip slips under shells or goes it alone on a cool fall trail run. Thumbloops hold your sleeves in place, on the off-chance you bust into a version of Y.M.C.A. mid ski-run.

  • MerinoMax double jersey knit, merino and elastane blend
  • Thermal regulation, odor control
  • Body-hugging fit
  • Thumbholes
  • Flatlock construction

Too loose as a mid layer

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I really wanted to keep this item as the material is very comfortable. But the cut of this sweater is (1)too loose, (2)short on the body and (3)short on the sleeve, making it unsuitable as a mid layer or a street sweater . What a shame.

Not what I expected

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is my first SmartWool product (besides their awesome socks) and I was disappointed. I almost wonder if I got a knock-off, but I have more faith in Backcountry.com than that. I bought a medium for my 6'0", 165-lb frame. The length is too short, so my undershirt will come out the bottom. The sleeves are too short (I do have kind of long arms) so the thumb holes are a little uncomfortable. More importantly, the fit is not nearly as tight as it looks in the picture. The sleeves are loose which allows air to blow up my arm and the torso is also pretty loose. I also expected the material to be a lot softer.

It works well enough, but for the price, I think you could get something a LOT better. If you still want one I would try to find it in a store so you can try it on.

Thanks for the informational erview. I am built much like you (one inch taller, same weight), and for something of this price, I want it to fit well. I have been very pleased with their socks (hiking, and cycling) and, as you, I expect their quality products to fit correctly. I guess I will keep looking.
