    Well Padded and SUPER warm

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

These things are great, they are padded so they are comfortable and provide cushion for hikes and work and they are so warm...great price too couldn't be happier.

    You can count on smartwool

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Lg

Thick, comfortable and good wicking. I like to wear a single thin pair of thin cycling socks underneath them. They seem to be closer to heavy thickness than medium.

    Probably the Best Socks

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I love these socks. Over the years I have used the REI merino wool blend socks, rag wool, other merino wool socks, but these socks take the cake. They are so incredibly comfortable that I don't think about my feet at all while I am hiking. If you are trying to save money on socks, don't bother. These socks are pretty cheap and super awesome.

    Gold Standard

My wife and I have been using these as our go-to hiking socks for years. They're comfy, wick sweat decently (bear in mind these are a midweight sock, so your feet will sweat in the summer), have good cushioning, and solid durability. I've never had issues with blisters but my wife's feet are veritable blister farms. She does pretty well with pairing these socks with a lightweight liner sock for some additional sweat wicking.

I've got a couple pairs of these in the lightweight and heavyweight styles and I keep coming back to the midweight ones. The heavyweight socks are great for cold nights in a tent, but are way too warm for me to hike in unless it's really cold and miserable. The lightweight ones are ok for trail shoes, but don't really have enough cushioning for longer days in backpacking boots.

In terms of fit, I've found these to be pretty much dead on to the sizing chart, +/- a full size. They'll stretch a bit and conform to your feet if you're on the upper end of the range, so I would recommend going with the smaller size if you're on the cusp between two sizes

    worthwhile purchase

I have been wearing SmartWool socks for quite a few years, whether at work, on the trail or just around the house. They fit well, they wear well, and they keep my feet comfortable regardless of temperature. With this purchase I was merely replenishing my supply of these valuable socks. I have used different material weights, but seem to prefer the medium variety most because of the cushioning they provide. Some probably won't care for the thickness of the material, but since it's breathable I find it comfortable. For me these socks are a great investment, and I suspect you might find that to be true too.

    Always been great

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have always had good luck with SmartWool socks. As usual, these socks are great. However, they are pretty thick. You will need to have a little extra space in your boots in order to wear these with boots comfortably. The would be GREAT for lounging around the house though.

    Perfect Stocking Stuffer!!

You cannot go wrong with this sock.

It's a must for any avid outdoors-man. Its thick enough to add cushion but not be an inferno on warm days. Works great inside a gore-tex boot for winter activities. Have multiple pairs and abuse every single one of them. I have returned from hiking the ADK with these socks caked in mud, quick wash and they're ready for the next beating.

If you're questioning what sock weight to get that special someone aim for these, can't go wrong.

Difference from the Phd- personally I use these for backpacking type trips. Anything where I am going to be moving at a slower pace or hiking with a bigger pack. For really long day hikes (covering a lot of miles) or quick hikes I prefer the Phd version of this sock. Same idea- just with some support bands and a little thinner sock.

    Good enough

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I have used two pairs, for quite some time now.

Fit:3/5.Its their worst trait i think.Maybe i should have got a smaller size, but after many washes, they loosen ,and now they can cause me blisters. The PHD would probably be better in this regard.

Comfort:5/5.Well cushioned, not problem for heavy backpacking.

Warmth:4/5.Perhaps they could be a bit warmer for their weight/cushion or maybe just my idea. They are quite warm though.

Wicking sweat/Odor:3/5.Hm,if you wear them in the summer under pants, you will sweat. But again this is no summer sock.It doesnt have any elaborate wicking design like PHD.

    Odor is manageable.

Durability:3/5.Have heard a few issues on the Internet for their quality.I didnt have any major issues, but the fit loosening and some minor issues annoyed me.

Overall:3/5.If you take proper size, and do not use for too hot climates its very good.Probably 4/5 unless you get a bad pair.

    Great socks

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I just wore these socks on the first 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. The nights were cold, and the terrain is rugged. These socks delivered both warmth during the frosty nights and excellent foot protection while hiking. Best of all in spite of being worn several days straight before I could wash them they were not very stinky, only an odd "nutty" smell. I recommend these socks!!!

    Comfortable and warm

    • Fit: True to size

I have several pairs of these socks and they go on my outdoor adventures . The fit is snug and comfortable with plenty of cushion to make your feet feel good mile after mile.

Great all year socks. They are warm to wear in the wintertime. I snowshoed and snow camped in them many times but they do not make me overheat in the summertime.

They also don't roll under my feet like I experienced with some other brands, I found that as a great plus. The last think I want on a steep slope is having to take my shoe of and adjust my sock.

    Recommend!

    Outstanding socks

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These socks are what you typically expect from Smartwool. Extremely comfortable, well made, and warm when they need to be. I love them and highly recommend them not only as a hiking sock but an everyday, casual sock as well! It's a sock that will last a long time and provide you several days of enjoyable wear.

    Great Quality

I have had a pair of these in the past and loved how well they performed that I had to order a few more pairs. They are great for boarding/skiing and hiking which is what I mainly used them for. They provide awesome warmth and breathe well!

can these socks be washed in washing machine and dried in dryer?

    From the Smartwool website:

"SmartWool socks are machine washable with cool or warm water. Tumble dry on low. To lengthen the life of your socks, it?s best to turn them inside out before throwing them in the washing machine."

I personally hang dry my Smartwool and other merino socks and have been happy with the results.

Can you wear these socks if the temp is 80 or above?

Yes, but you may want to consider a sock with a higher percentage of synthetic. This will move the moisture away from your foot better, especially if you have sweaty feet. Try the Teko Synrgi series. http://www.backcountry.com/teko-midweight-hiking-sock-mens.html
