SmartWool is used to getting praise for their naturally good socks. This new medium weight sock follows the lead of their award-winning hiking socks. SmartWool uses New Zealand grown Merino wool for its ability to keep your feet warm, cozy, and blister-free through mile after mile on long trails. The resilient fibers are spring loaded to keep the bounce in your step even after hours of walking. Itching and odors are eliminated by special treatments making these the socks to wear every time you hit the trail.
I have way too many types of socks and it's borderline weird but these are my "go to" socks and I've bought them for years and used them for EVERYTHING. I have one foot that's slightly smaller than the other and I have to buy footwear based on the larger foot. These socks have just enough padding to soak up some of the extra room in the small foot shoe. They're durable .. they work in a wide range of temperature and they don't lose their shape or compression.
I have had one pair for over a year now and they are still my favorite socks. I lost one sock for a while and still wore it with a random other sock. Because at least one of my feet would be enjoying the smartwool. I just got another pair for Christmas. There is obviously some difference between the two pairs, but I must say that with the beating I have put the first pair through they are in good shape. Tested and Approved.
This sock is comfortable and well made. Has nice tight stitching and has a classic wicking design. My girl friend and I found that our Smartwool socks started to wear on the tops of the toes and around the ankle. We will be taking them to Everest basecamp so we will see how they hold up. Another plus is that they are thick and true medium weight.

Yes, but you may want to consider a sock with a higher percentage of synthetic. This will move the moisture away from your foot better, especially if you have sweaty feet. Try the Teko Synrgi series. http://www.backcountry.com/teko-midweight-hiking-sock-mens.html
They'll be pretty hot for that, I'd recommend the "Light" weight ones for hot-weather hiking or running. I use these for trail running and hiking: http://www.backcountry.com/smartwool-phd-running-ultra-light-mini-sock
Depends what you mean by "terry cloth". The interior IS woven in what is called a "terry loop". The height, quantity and density of these loops are varied to provide specific amounts of cushioning and stretch. Hope this helps.
No, the weave is in such a way that the inside color is contrasting (kind of like blue jeans), but is in the cozy merino wool. I wear these socks every day, well every day that I wear socks.
It is kind of hard to review socks but these things are fantastic. They protect my feet, keep them warm and at the same time keep them from sweating. Have held their shape well and are durable.
There are other wool socks - I've tried a few - and these are by far the best. :) It works really well in the fall and spring BC but if you are planning on going out in the winter, then you may also want to have the thicker ones (I have both and usually use two pairs of these in the winter). Can't go wrong with SmartWool. :)
It's really hard to go wrong with any Smartwool product. I own a few different socks of theirs, but this one is my favorite. From the moment you pull these out of the packaging you can tell that these are some seriously well made socks. The attention to detail is very noticeable from the "Feels Good" stitched around the top, to the fleecy lining inside. These socks keep my feet warm and comfortable all winter long. Anyone who questions paying nearly $20 a pair obviously doesn't own any of these. If you like your feet to stay warm in cold temps, these are a very worthwhile investment.
I use these all the time for most of my hikes. They do a good job of keeping my feet dry and making sure blisters don't pop up. I wash them with normal loads, but always line dry. They still look new after 8 months of use.
In my experience Smartwool socks are worth it. These are warm and cozy and just feel great on my feet, even for a full day of hiking or mountaineering. when combined with sock liners they're fantastic.
I found them true to size, though for socks that's usually pretty easy. I wear a 12(US) and the XL is great.
They have been very durable for a three and a half years of use with almost no wear to date. I have three pair and rotate them, so they do get a pretty light duty cycle. One pair did pill when I forgot to turn it inside out before putting it in the dryer, but it's still very usable and that was my fault. Normal wool sock care still applies: turn them inside out and use gentle wash cycle and avoid the dryer when possible. I line dry these whenever I can.
I recently did some mountaineering in the Presidential range in New Hampshire, and these socks really dissapointed me. I've used them before, and they were adequate, but when we got hit with rain, directly followed by snow, they just failed. My boots got wet, and these socks failed to keep my feet warm, despite the warm-when-wet merino wool, and at one point, part of the sock froze on my foot. I figured it was just the fact that merino wool sucks up water, but I switched to Darn Tough hiking socks for my ascent of Washington, and I didn't have any of the same problems. They also don't hug your foot very well, and could benefit from some added elastic in the materials. They're adequate, but REI makes better socks for less money.
These are the best socks I've ever had.I started wearing smartwool socks while on active duty years ago-and never bought any socks exept smartwool socks since. This incarnation of hiking sock is about as close to perfect a hiking sock can get-they breathe extemely well, they wick moisture quickly away from your feet so they never feel clammy or wet-and dry very quickly if you DO get them wet.The best.
I bought 2 pair of these for a 7-day Mt Kilimanjaro trek, followed by a 3-day Mt Kenya trek. I alternated, wearing one pair in the morning and switching out in the afternoon for the other pair. They worked great. They have a lot of cushion, which definitely helped keep my feet comfortable during these multi-day treks.
best socks ever! I LOVE my PhD socks but these are better for more serious boots, and a more serious day, no problems at all for two days straight. They are worth every penny, and I look forward to owning more in the future. IMO these are WAY better than Thorlos, practically no comparison.
UPDATE: recently developed a stress fracture in my left foot, and I have to wear a boot constantly, this is the ONLY sock I own that works all day under the boot, I wore one for five days before it needed changing, they don't slip, itch too much, or lose their padding over the days, PERFECT!! and those same thorlos I mentioned earlier are TERRIBLE underneath, and less comfortable than plain cotton...
I love these socks. I wear them every day, well every day that I wear socks. They are very comfortable, and long lasting. I bought my first pair with some nice liners to break in some new boots. I didn't need the liners, and now I have several pair of these. They wear so well I couldn't tell you which pair were my original pair. I am amazed at how the elastic holds up.
In the winter, they are warm. Because they are wool, they still provide warmth when wet. I wear a pair with my water shoes when I kayak because much of the summer where I kayak the water is dam release and cold. These help to keep my feet happy while I get my paddle on.
I dont find them to be too hot in the summer, and if need be, you can wear them for an extended period without them getting too gross. What is extended and what is too gross? Well its a relative scale. Lets leave it at that.
I have these and the heavyweights and also the extra heavyweights, being a person who gets cold toes and fingers I like these up to around 45 40 You can add a liner if you wanted . They are very comfortable this is a great weight for just everyday winter weather! Trust me once you go SmartWool of any weight you will never go back!!!
I have terrible feet - the bane of my active existence! Very poor circulation -they go numb, swell up, blister, and just plain hurt. These socks have been wonderful.. I use them to hike, run, and if I had enough, I would wear them all the time. I own four pairs- plan to order more today.
Smartwool has come out with a few different lines of socks recently (PhD, Adrenaline, etc.), and while these newcomers are great socks and live up to the Smartwool name, they seem a bit unnecessary. The midweight hikers have been around for a bazillion years, and are the gold standard of the sock world. I have four pairs, including two that are still in great condition after a 40-day, 550 mile section of the AT. I wear them every day when it is cold. They are warm and comfy, and just make you feel good. On top of that, they are the best hiking sock available. They wick sweat, repel odor, retain warmth even when wet, and are very durable.
I've worn these for my job as a Field Service Engineer for the last ten years. I've worn them in every climate from a Middle Eastern summer to a winter in Colorado and never been disappointed or had unhappy feet. You simply can't go wrong with these socks.
I own 2 pairs of these socks, after one year both socks have holes in the ankle and are destined for the trash can. Poor quality seems to be smart wools new thing. I used to love smart wool, but after countless pairs of their socks have torn or gotten holes I give up. Smart Wool once stood for quality, now they are just cheap overpriced junk. Want lasting socks? Don't buy smart wool.
I like the PhDs for running and tossed my old Thorlos in favor of them, so I asked Backcountry for some recommendations for tennis and/or soccer-worthy wool socks so I could toss my old socks for that too. They recommended these and a pair of Darn Tough hikers (also good but I prefer the padding on the Smartwools). Like the PhDs, these wick sweat much better than the Thorlos or any other non-wool socks I've tried, but unlike the PhDs, they're also thick enough to provide support and prevent blistering. The pile barely compresses: after two hours on court in roasting heat, they're almost as thick and comfortable as when I started. Performed equally well in soccer cleats. Not cheap, but neither are Thorlos or any good dedicated tennis or soccer socks. It's a joke given the size of the tennis and soccer markets that running/outdoor socks (and gear generally, esp. shoes, tech and compression clothes, sunglasses, hell, everything) are still so superior to tennis/soccer gear, but there it is.
I can't say enough good things about SmartWool socks. I picked up a few pair last year before hiking the Grand Canyon and now wear nothing else because of their warmth. They are a winter staple starting in October through April.
Smart Wool socks are the absolute best socks in the world. They are extremely comfortable, odor diminishing, stay dry and are great with hiking boots. I wore these in Tibet in the winter and between my boots and socks, my feet were always the most comfortable part of my body. I did layer these particular socks under other Smart wool socks while in Tibet, which is probably why my feet felt like they were walking on a cloud. No joke...
I wore one pair of these socks every day for 9 days straight of hiking in the rain in Wyoming. I do not wear liners with these. They are very comfortable on the skin. I had a second pair with me to sleep in at night. It was in the 50's during the day and down in the 30's at night. My feet stayed nice and cool during the day and warm enough at night. Best of all, they don't stink!
I love my Smart Wool socks. I wear them everywhere, hiking of course, but also around the house and to sleep in on cold nights. Once I discovered Smart Wool socks I have never been satisfied with anything other brand!
Not much I can say that hasn't already been said below. It's not often we see other people's socks but I went to yoga on a chilly day and before class started I noticed two other people wearing the same pair. Definitely a reason why. Buy them and enjoy!
These socks are the best. They fit well and are so comfy. Just came back from hiking the Grand Canyon in these socks and not a single blister in 17 miles!
these socks are great around town and in the woods. Even when my feet got wet from walking in the rain and through creeks the socks held up and my feet stay comfortable all things considered
Great socks, used them on multiple military marches w/ over 80 lbs of gear-- best moisture management I've found out of all the other brands I've tried. I swear by them as do several other Marines in my platoon. Only downside is they tend to fray a little but so far, overall effectiveness has not changed.
For 20 years I have worn these socks hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, to work (home-care nurse), gardening, shopping, to gym work outs, even sleeping......everything but surfing or showering! And during these 20 years I have gone through a surprisingly few pair. No holes even, just more cardboardy feel when they are done for. A stand alone product, worthy of this gal's applause!
Thus far have worn these on a couple of short day hikes with hiking boots. They are great! Very comfortable and breath well. I have many different brands of socks and by far perfer Smartwool's light and medium weight socks. They fit true, I wear a 13 and the XL fit perfect. While these have not pilled yet all of my other Smartwool socks have but not much.
I couldn't imagine using any other sock in wintertime. Tall enough for backyard hikes in the snow with the kiddos, but not so thick that I can't wear 'em to work too. The medium weight makes them super-versatile. I wear 10.5 shoes and the Large is ideal. \
It was a search to find the right brand and size for my husband. He wears a size 13 shoe -- regular size socks don't fit. It was worth the effort to find this online store though. Especially since all of his Smart Wool socks are now worn out with holes from continuous wear, which were purchased in another state a few years ago. Although they are pricey in comparison to other brand hiking socks in retail stores, he swears by these in particular for their comfort, coolness, and wear. Thanks for making such a quality product! By the way, my husbands birthday is in January I'll be putting in another order of socks.
My sock collection is made up mostly of smart wool socks for the winter and cycling socks for the summer. Smartwools have worked great from kicking around town, to camping in the Wasatch. No down side, I love 'em.
I bought two pairs of these: one for my husband and one for my dad who were about to go on a 4-day hike in Alaska. They loved them. They were comfortable enough to wear with BRAND NEW BOOTS and dried quickly. These socks are AWESOME!!!
Love these socks. Wore them all day fishing and my feet loved them. I also wore them to work one day, my feet stayed very comfortable even working in an office. I thought that they might be extra warm being a mid weight sock.
Joe, I simply have not had that experience. I have had these socks for three years, rotating three pair in use and they have held up very well. I find that I have to be careful when washing them, making sure they get delicate cycle and avoid the dryer when possible, but am very pleased with their durability.
There could be any number of other factors influencing their durability too, including shoe fit and foot shape. Since you seem to have the problem often I suppose we can rule out a bad batch or a defective pair. So let the buyer beware, some people do have experience with smartwool socks wearing out quickly, while others do not.
The uniformly "sunny" comments above are not "Smartwool" socks as I know them -- I wonder if this business/sales oriented site is just enabling favorable comments: These socks develop holes EVERY TIME after just a few wearings, and I do nothing strenuous with them:Out of frustration with this happening constantly (They're comfortable and there's a lot of hype around about how great they are) I just googled the problem (S-Wool wearing out) and discovered various blogs and negative comments ( like the SmartWool Experiment blog ) --I just wrote the company pleading with them to make socks that last for more than a few weeks without developing holes. ---hope you print this because, in truth, a lot of people are experiencing a lot of misery ( and spending hundreds per year)for a product that wears out more quickly thanany product ( or sock!) I've ever known ----and they're saying it----buyers, BEWARE!!!
