It's more than just a really warm beanie.

Smartwool designed its Cuffed Beanie specifically for very cold-weather endeavors like skiing or running in the middle of winter. Its merino wool fabric regulates your head's temperature so you're neither too warm nor too cold, and it's naturally antimicrobial to keep odor to a minimum. A roll cuff earband brings even more toasty warmth to your ears, and clean finish seams make sure you stay comfy all day.

    Lightweight and robust

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Very warm for the weight. It's been to NM and CO for ski trips in variable conditions. Mercury dropped to 20 F and at no point was my head cold. The beanie got wet and snowy and it was still warm.

I don't wear a helmet but this beanie would easily fit under one.

    Good but Undersized

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Surprisingly warm for how light it is, very comfortable, but for someone with a "bigger than normal" head the fit can be a bit awkward: not enough material to do a full flip on the bottom cuff, and too much to just wear it straight

    Good Merino

I've had one these for a while and have used it regularly under my helmet, but finally had to replace it after the dog decided it was hers to nibble on (she always goes for the merino, good taste). This is such an awesome beanie! I personally wear it unfolded, under a helmet or casually. It provides good warmth and isn't too thick. I love the soft feel of the merino, and it's a mega plus that it doesn't stink after a long day on the mountain. All in all, I love this smartwool cap, it's a winner!

Too Small for what I like

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I ordered this hat hoping it was going to basically be a merio wool watch cap think, carharrt. I was expecting it to be thinner but this was just too small and tight for me.

      Perfect for a bald head

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Nothing beats marino as soft as this for a bald head. It breaths, gets wet and still cuts the chill.

I wear this in the office and as well as aerobic activities. It is a beauty. Unfortunately a moth liked it a bit much last summer so another will be on order soon.

      Favorite beanie... EVAR!!!!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Grabbed this on a whim, because. SmartWool. (Do I have a merino addiction? Perhaps.) It quickly replaced a Wigwam wool beanie. It is stretchy and softer texture. It is quite possibly my favorite piece of cold weather kit.

It is surprisingly thin, yet I find it to be perfectly warm in all but the most extreme conditions--and it breathes like nothing is there at all. It is pretty effective at cutting the wind, but not so much that my head gets overly hot high-intensity activity. (I usually layer down in the core and keep this on to prevent my ears from getting a chill.)

It also does a good job repelling a bit of water, and even when it does get a bit wet, the Merino fabric still keeps my head feeling pretty comfortable.

I really like pairing this with the SmartWool Neck Gaiter: http://www.backcountry.com/smartwool-neck-gaiter

      It's a dynamite combo.
