For the ultra-light skier who desires a ski that performs on deeper days, the handmade Ski Trab Stelvio FreeRide Light XL Alpine Ski combines all the engineering you love from Ski Trab with wider dimensions (126/90/112) for powder touring.

  • Carbon-fiber weave power-cap construction produces torsional stiffness for better edge grip and turning stability
  • Patented aramid honeycomb I-beam core for a lively ride
  • 52 HRC carbon steel edge for dynamic hold on ice in life-or-death situations
  • Oversized tips float and reduce tip dive without sacrificing usable edge
  • Ski mountaineering side-cut for highly adaptive turns whether you’re on a wide-open volcano or a steep couloir
  • Nano protect top sheet reduces snow build-up and protects the important inner core of the ski
  • High-molecular sintered density race base offers supreme glide and more impact resistance, which means you have less repairs
  • Editor’s Choice 2010 and Outside 2009 Gear of the Year awards

Bottom Line: A powder ski for the weight watcher.

Magic skis

Been skiing on the 185cm with dynafit ft12 for the last two seasons and have never had a better high altitude ski......they handle all conditions extremely well....they're so light on the climb up yet edge grip is off the charts for this type of ski....they do prefer shorter radius turns but are stiff enough to load the tail and ski big fast gs turns....crud is easy and they love powder.....I think they are magic skis!! ....... and they're beautiful too....

The Godfather of skis in the real norwegian mountains

By:

Well, always interesting when people have just the opposite experience than yourself. Me and five of my outdoor life students have tested out both the Skitrab Freerando and the Stelvio XL this season. Skiers ranked from beginners to experienced. We have been out 2-4 times every week, in various condition from deep powder to ice. We all agreed these skis to be near perfect for the mountain top trips we do in the telemark style. The skis simply do what we want them to do, in short and longturns, in the wood and in the open. Compared to more specilazed skis, you will off course alway find something better for every singel conditon you meet. But also considering incredable lighweight, we found these skis to be top ranking among the all round skis we have tested so far.
Anyway its always interesting to hear quite the opposite experience with the same type of skis. Hope you will find something that will make you satisfied Mac. In the end, its the fun and joy for every singel person that matters. Best regards from Roar, Trollheimen, Norway.

Ski Trab Stelvio FreeRide Alpine Ski

When these arrived at my local ski shop, the employees were all stunned. I think the comment was 'sorry they're so wet, we've all been drooling all over them.' The more meaningful indication of their quality was that the 2 skis measured exactly the same in grams: basically unheard of. These are a tremendous ski for the weight, and even without that consideration they are an excellent item.

I used it out of bounds in UT, at Solitude, and in the backwoods of the Adirondacks. Therefor they had a chance to play in 1+ foot power, and on rain hardened ice, and everything in between. They did just dandy on all of that. I went relatively short - I'm 6'2", ski these with a 25-45 lb pack and am 180+ - and the 178 was great. I am not a super aggressive skier, and at higher speeds on groomers there was very little chatter - although the light weight was notable. An excellent item and if on sale a great value.

Love these skis

Been skiing on these skis since december. Have them set up with dynafit bindings for touring. So far they've been great. I've skied a pretty wide variety of snow conditions on them and have found them to perform well in all of them. Also, they're great on the ascent. I've tree skied in less than desirable conditions and found the ski responsive. I've also not had any problems getting them to power through crud either. For the weight you'd be hard pressed to find a ski that performs this well. The tip floats just fine too

Trab's FreeRide XL

By:
February 21, 2011

bought a set of these on recommendation and set them up with AXL's. These skiis are only good for big open turns in soft snow. In trees or crud forget it they are slow to respond and dive immediatly when you initiate a turn. At best they are a touring ski. I am selling them as fast as I can

Those reading tmac's post should note that he had Axl telemark bindings on his Stelvio XL's. Until I saw the light (Dynafits) a few years ago, I teled on HammerHeads (Axls w/o touring pivot) for years, and I can advise that HH/Axl's contribute to awful tip dive with many skis that would not tip dive with Dynafits or other AT bindings. I'm loving my 185 Stelvio XLs with Dynafits

Skis are so easy to turn these days I'm always amused by how wound folks can get about something so simple and fun. Before issuing any negative comments you should find an old pair of 205 race skis, pick your favorite line, and see how far you get. For perspective. Modern skis are a cinch. I'm surprised it takes any skill at all!

I been teaching telemark in the Norwegian Mountains for over 20 years. I bought the stelvio some time ago, and these skis are without no doubt one of the best ski I ever tried. If you cant handle theme under all conditions, I agree you better sell them to somebody who can!
