Hard shell pads are bulky and stiff, but riding padless is a ticket to the ER. Get the SixSixOne Chicken Wing Elbow Guard and save yourself the trip. While it isn’t built for the Red Bull Rampage, the multi-layer vented neoprene in the Chicken Wing provides enough cushion and abrasion resistance to turn a few stitches or a hairline fracture into a big bruise, and that's a great trade-off. Its short, low profile and ample flex mean you can wear it on even the hottest days.
Bottom Line: Because your insurance doesn’t cover extreme stupidity.

I have had these for about 4 months now, using them 3-4 times a week. No issues with the construction (unlike the tomcat knee pads by six six one - AVOID THEM) or feel.
The few good spills I have taken (20-30mph on asphalt), the have held up. However, the elbow pads have to be centered on your elbow, and tight enough to stay put to provide protection. The foam gives much less wiggle room then a hard shell.
