The Sierra Designs Velox 1 Ultralight Tent makes a great pick for solo backpacking trips where you'd rather not deal with the drawbacks of a floorless shelter or lean-to. The full mesh sidewalls allow plenty of air flow without the risk of being eaten alive by mosquitoes as you sleep. Sierra Designs gave this freestanding tent a vestibule large enough to hold your pack and boots, so you don't have to start your morning with wet gear. The Velox 1 Ultralight Tent's combination of single- and double-wall designs helps shave its weight to only three pounds, and you can pitch just the fly with a footprint (sold separately) to shave a whole pound for really long trips.

Bottom Line: The Sierra Designs Velox 1 Ultralight Tent adds much-needed comfort to your solo backpacking trips.

You set the poles up in the footprint the same way that you would for the tent, then drape the fly over it and stake it down.

Best value single person tent.

The SD Velox 1 is WIDER than the MSR Hubba, has MORE HEAD ROOM than the Marmot Eos 1, and it WEIGHS ABOUT THE SAME as both the MSR and Marmot. The SD Velox 1 has tapped floor seams--the MSR DOES NOT.

The Velox 1 tent is the only lightweight single person, tent that will have all the features that you want. One wall of the tent is single-walled, the rest are double walled, so this would even make a better winter tent than either the MSR or Marmot, because you can pitch the single wall in the wind and cut down on drafts. The Velox 1 pitches tight and taught as well.

Is that a 3 season tent? How well will it handle in cold windy or rainy conditions?

Yes it is a 3-season tent. I would rate is as a little below average for handling rainy/windy conditions. Only 3 stakes and 2 poles doesn't make for a wicked stable shelter.Hope that helps.

I just spent a night in rainy/snowy (2 in of wet, heavy snow) weather that got down to 28 degrees. Worked like a champ. Tent was very stable and strong, and no moisture got in. No condensation in the morning (zip vent is very nice). There are 5 stakes, not 3 as Steve said above.

The fly ripped

By:
January 20, 2009

This is probly a fluke but I was in 20 below weather this weekend in this tent with a fair amount of snow. What happened was the fly riped right wear the stake loop is sewn on just with a light breeze. I'm sure the cold had a lot to do with it but, I will probly set it aside for better weather and find a better stitched tent for the extreme cold.

Not trying to be a jerk... but the tent is meant as a 3-season tent, so I'm not terribly surprised it didn't fare well in 20 below! (sort of reflected in review)
