Light and Effective

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Rainy spring in New Hampshire has been a bit more pleasant since I've had this lightweight beauty on. Really easy to carry around, but keeps me nice a dry.
Large fits well, but not sure that I could add another layer. (I'm 5'9", 170.) This model doesn't have pit zips. Can get a little warm.

is this coat water proof

Responded on

No. It has a coating that makes it water resistant, so it will work for light rain, but heavy rain, or being out for a time in a downpour, will soak through.

The seams are not taped so eventually you will get wet.

Can your northface denali zip into this jacket?

dont quote me, because i have no experience with either specific jacket, but i seriously doubt it. in my experience, different brands and even different models within the same brand have different zipper lengths, and i seriously doubt the sierra designs makes anything to pair with TNF products and vise versa, especially when each brand makes similar competing products.

Exactly what it says

I Bought this in Hydrenga, very pretty purple. Jacket is great and is just what the description says. Simple, easy to pack rain coat. Pit zips are a huge help for circulation. I pack this in the bottom of my purse for those rain storms that sneak up on you. I bought a medium, true to size.

Good for sudden showers

I agree with other review comment about the lack of breathability but it was perfect to keep in my backpack for a sudden rain shower. Lightweight and quick drying.

Good!

It worked very good on a 8 day trip to Roraima Tepuy summit. Although the skin becomes sweaty it worked in preventing me to get soaked and also good to keep me warm using it on top of other fleece jacket. Specially good since it is compressible

Great for the Price

I have only used this jacket once and it does the job. On a snowshoeing trip the wind picked up and it was cold so I threw this jacket on and warmed up quickly. The only downside is that if you get overly warm wearing it and sweat the sweat builds up in the jacket and when you take it off, your clothing is all wet from sweat and can be chilly. But other than that I was quite happy with the job it performed on blocking the wind and water.

Does not breathe at all

I bought this rain jacket to take with me to a trip to Southeast Asia. Climate was expected to be humid 80s, occasional chance of light rain. Especially in the hot weather, the fact that the jacket did not breathe at all made it especially uncomfortable to wear when my skin was already sweaty. After walking in a light drizzle for 20 minutes, I couldn't tell if my clothes underneath were wet from rain or sweat or both. In the end, I don't recommend. I would have been better off with a 60 cent poncho.

Will this jacketkeep me dry in tropical rainstorms? Any suggestions of a light weight rain jacket that will?

Best Answer Responded on

No, it's only water resistant. With rain gear, you'll get what you pay for. Sorry I'm not familiar with the Sierra Designs stuff, but you'll want something that's "waterproof" (including taped seams)and that breaths well. Maybe start there. Also, have a look at the something like the Marmot Precip as your next step up in price, weight, and quality. Rather than send you in the direction of Gore-Tex, since the conditions you're asking about are tropical, and undoubtedly hot and humid, I would suggest something in eVent. The right piece will keep you dry and breath well enough to keep you cool. My favorite jacket is the Rab Latok Alpine. It's what I use most often, and the first thing I would reach for in your situation. Hope that helps.

Is this jacket breathable, or does it make you feel clammy?

Best Answer Responded on

I have had this jacket for a while. It is great to have on hand b/c it is so light and small - but my only complaint is that it does not breathe well. I have worn it hiking and biking - it breaks the wind and keeps the rain out - but it often does leave me sweaty and clammy after the hike or bike trail.

Great jacket, runs small!

Got this jacket from backcountry like, 3 years ago. Have not stopped using it.

It was my light wind shirt when I climbed Kilimanjaro. It was my fall jacket biking around San Fran. And It's currently my spring rain jacket biking around my home town.

All around fantastic and light weight for on the trail or in the city. It does run a little small, i'm normally an XS and bought an XS, wish I had sized up to the S. The wrist elastic can be a little tight, but it's nice when it's windy.

It has both! The Microlight comes with a pouch or you can stuff it into one of the pockets.
