The formerly distant worlds of family camping and lightweight backpacking can finally cross paths thanks to the Sierra Designs Lightning XT 4 Tent. This four-person tent features ultralight mesh and nylon construction with a huge interior space, so you can leave the noisy campgrounds behind and bring the whole family along. Two doors and two vestibules make for easy gear storage and quick exits, and the clip-in pole design gives you easier set up and a lower pack weight. Solo set-ups won’t be a problem either thanks to the snap-in Jake’s Foot corners, which lock the pole in the grommet.

Bottom Line: At last, lightweight gear that’s family friendly.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

The family grows and so does my tent

My family expanded by one this year and our two person tent just wasn't cutting it. Then I realized that I won't be hiking with all three, only car camping, so why not go big? I can't believe I didn't buy a big car camping temt a long time ago! The XT 4 has SO much room inside, yet really doesn't weight like a gaint family tent. My scale at home (With stuff sack, poles, fly, & stakes) comes in at just under 7 lbs, not too hefty. Set up is petty friendly, with the clips there is no running poles through a sleave. Overall this tent is great and it's the one for you if your looking for a family tent. My only concern is the hardware, the hardwarre doesn't have any problems, and is well designed, but it is specialized and finding replacements in the future my be an issue.

Big space, enough for me at 6'4" to not touch the sides. Plenty of room for 3 and gear and is easy to set up (even at night). With the footprint (for protection of the floor) this is likely to last for a number of seasons, it seems very sturdy. We've camped this in the Cascades, on the Oregon coast, and in the Redwoods - in rain and wind, sunshine and heat and it's always performed great.

Strong recommendation if you're looking for a big tent that is a reasonable weight and not a "big house" big family tent.

Great tent with lots of space!

Great tent. Took it snowshoeing on a overnighter, slept 3 adults plus all our gear and were nice and dry the next morning with 6 inches of snow on top of us. I do wish the doors were a little bigger but can't complain too much with the weight and size of this tent. I will definitely be taking this tent with me on all my backpacking and car camping trips for now on!

Definitely Weather-Proof

It survived gale force winds off of lake Michigan, and a downpour (two inches of rain in two hours). It kept us warm and dry all night. I wouldn't have wanted to be in any other tent.
