Light Year 1 Tent - 1 Person 3 Season

If you pine for the minimal bulk of a bivy sack, but hate the claustrophobic greenhouse feeling of actually sleeping in one, the Sierra Designs Light Year 1 Tent is your salvation. Like a bivy sack, the Light Year 1 is minimal in weight and packs down as small as possible. Very much unlike a bivy sack, the Light Year 1 has a ton of room (for one person), and uses twin Featherlite poles to suspend itself above you instead of clinging to your sleeping bag. It also has a vestibule for your gear and shoes, so you can stow your stuff out of the rain. Is it any wonder that this solo shelter is a go-to for fast-moving solo hikers, bike touristes, and dedicated climbers?

Bottom Line: Solo shelter without the bivy sack bummer.

Nice Soloing Tent

By:
December 1, 2008

I have owned this tent for almost a year now and have really enjoyed it. I have used it on several weekend backpacking trips during the Spring and Summer months. As long as you don't mind sitting or lying down to put on your clothes each morning, then you'll be good to go. I am 6'2" and found the tent to have plenty of room. I use a long sized sleeping bag and pad too. The only thing I found to be a problem was the vestibule was rather small for my backpack. Granted, I did have a Dana Design Glacier backpack (5500 cubic inches) and that is probably why it didn't fit. However, in a rain storm I could make it work. Plenty of room for shoes though and other smaller pieces of gear. The tent's white material glows with the moon, providing a minimal amount of illumination inside the tent. Personally I really like that as I could grab a drink from my nalgene or grab my headlamp quicker instead of fumbling around for it. Make sure you can stake the tent or otherwise you'll need to be creative in keeping the tent from collapsing. Just as the previous reviewer stated the bag is a permanent part of my soloing gear as well.

I would try to contact Sierra Designs to see if you can get a replacement through them. They are available through Sierra Designs & also Easton:http://www.eastonpoles.com/mountain/tent_products/default.htm

Great Solo Home

By:

I've had this tent since 2004. I chose it because it is lightweight, single person, long enough for my 6'4" size, & still have extra room @ head, foot, & side to side. A small vestibule is also a plus to store boots & a few other things. The durable nylon body & fly have weathered sustained hail & heavy rain without any problem. It is also factory seam sealed. Condensation is never a factor due to the ventilated side, top & end panels. Single panel nylon mesh door. Having used two person tents for so long, it took me a few nights to get used to the smaller size. When you take all things into consideration, this is a great little shelter for your investment.

Super solo shelter

By:
August 22, 2008

Just got back from a five day trip that included 3 days of torrential rain. No condensation issues, either. This tent kept me dry, period. I can't imagine living under a tarp or a shelter without a floor. There are so many variable in solo hiking in remote wilderness areas. Its a constant tension balancing weight and your margin of safety. This tent is now a permanent part of my solo gear. I'm also 6-4", but I find the tent spacious enough to enjoy reading and writing in the evenings. Boots fit well down in the narrow end, while extra clothing and water bottle fit will above the head. The storage pocket is a perfect fit for a can of bear spray. The set up is simple and clever with only two poles. While not free-standing, staking out the head and toe is all that necessary.
