The Sierra Designs Light Year 1 Footprint puts an extra layer underneath your Light Year 1 Tent, to protect it from the harsh terrain you camp in. Alternately, you can use the Footprint and Shelter as a lightweight bivy system when you're moving fast.
Bottom Line: The tiny footprint of your Light Year 1 Tent deserves a Footprint all its own.

I have footprints for all my tents, and this is no exception. I would much rather pay 30-40 dollars for a new footprints than a couple hundred for a new tent, and in rocky Utah, you can shred a footprint in the desert in no time.
